And If It Doesn’t Lack One Now, I’ll Make Sure It Lacks One in the Future!

Cassandra at Villainous Company notes an Eric Lichtblau-penned New York Times article from November 2005, titled: “U.S. Lacks Strategy to Curb Terror Funds.”

The Swift program that everyone and his dog already knew about? Apparently it was unknown to Mr. Lichtblau then.

Read her whole post.

Maybe Mr. Lichtblau’s disclosure of the Swift program was simply designed to ensure the accuracy of that headline.

UPDATE: Meanwhile, Allah reports on evidence that the recent disclosure jeopardized three ongoing investigations. See? Mr. Lichtblau was right after all!

UPDATE x2: Original credit for finding Lichtblau’s 2005 piece goes to Cori Dauber.

  1. What? You mean there were investigations hurt by this disclosure? On the upside, we’re all releaved about those privacy concerns!

  3. Powerline in linking you quotes the Nov 2005 article:

    …and that the administration:
is now developing a program to gain access to and track potentially hundreds of millions of international bank transfers into the United States.
But experts in the field say the results have been spotty, with few clear dents in Al Qaeda’s ability to move money and finance terrorist attacks.

Sometimes I wonder if articles like this are not merely fishing expeditions. Hoping that someone will respond. Either to defend the spotty results charge or to recognize that Lichtblau is seeking information on international bank transfers.

  4. So they ran the story “U.S. Lacks Strategy to Curb Terror Funds” in November, but are claiming they withheld the Swift article for a year?

  5. Hey P rock-star blogger — I know this isn’t the place, but I don’t have posting privileges for new threads.

News reports tonight say that it was the FBI infiltrators who suggested the bombing targets for the awesome Miami terrorists. It just gets scarier and scarier, doesn’t it?

  6. Nosh – if you want to post your own topics go get your own blog. I’ll have fun not reading it. You clearly don’t have any intelligent comments to post.

  7. I’ve read that officials at Treasury are of the opinion that the source for the Times story is not presently employed by the government. Hmmm…does anyone think that they’re referring to former officials of the Bush 41 administration? The question that I’m interested in is what ties does the leaker have to the Clintons and the Hillary campaign. Any bets as to how quickly the Times will pick up that thread? Probably right after they’re finished investigating Bill’s reported use of IRS data to punish his political opponents…
