More on Dallas: Dead Suspect Identified, Three Others in Custody [UPDATED – Sally Kohn Hot Take]
[guest post by JVW]
As a follow-up to last night’s developments in Dallas, here has what has transpired since I signed off almost 12 hours ago.
* The death toll has risen to five: four Dallas Police Department officers and the Dallas Area Rapid Transit officer.
* The suspect who had been holed up in the parking garage at the nearby community college was killed when a police robot detonated an explosive near him as he was exchanging gunfire with police. He has been identified as Micah Xavier Johnson, 25, of Mesquite. His claims of having scattered bombs throughout downtown appear, fortunately, to be untrue.
* The Dallas Morning news says that three people are in custody but are not cooperating with police. These are likely the three who were arrested last night: a female suspect and two (presumably) male suspects who were said to be carrying camouflage tote bags. Before his death, Johnson claimed to be acting alone.
[. . .] there has been a vicious, calculated and despicable attack on law enforcement. Police in Dallas were on duty, doing their jobs, keeping people safe during peaceful protests. These law enforcement officers were targeted, and nearly a dozen officers were shot.
[. . .] I believe that I speak for every single American when I say that we are horrified over these events, and that we stand united with the people and the police department in Dallas. According to police, there are multiple suspects. We will learn more, undoubtedly, about their twisted motivations. [. . .]
For now, let me just say that even as yesterday I spoke about our need to be concerned, as all Americans, about racial disparities in our criminal justice system, I also said yesterday that our police have an extraordinarily difficult job and the vast majority of them do their job in outstanding fashion. I also indicated the degree to which we need to be supportive of those officers who do their job each and every day, protecting us and protecting our communities.
Today is a wrenching reminder of the sacrifices that they make for us. We also know that when people are armed with powerful weapons, unfortunately it makes attacks like these more deadly and more tragic. And in the days ahead, we’re going to have to consider those realities as well.
Never miss that opportunity to make a gun control pitch, Mr. President.
[UPDATE] – Sally Kohn weighs in heavily with the stupidity:
How's about instead of blaming protest movements for violence against police, we blame policing for violence that necessitated protests?!?

And yes, there are initial unsubstantiated reports on some websites that the shooter was affiliated with a local mosque. I left that out of the main body of the post until we get confirmation from local authorities, who thus far have not linked this to terrorism and have pointed out that Johnson did not have a police record.
JVW (eabb2a) — 7/8/2016 @ 10:29 amTEXAS OPEN CARRY + NO ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN = 5 DEAD DALLAS COPS. THANK YOU, NRA.
DCSCA (a343d5) — 7/8/2016 @ 10:31 amSounds like the Fred dormer profile, also the Washington navy yard shooter.
narciso (732bc0) — 7/8/2016 @ 10:34 amSomeone should ask the President if this was also a racist attack, seeing as how the shooter reportedly targeted white officers. But that’s not the correct use of the word “racist” in some circles, including those in which the President seems comfortable.
JVW (eabb2a) — 7/8/2016 @ 10:36 amThe gun control pitch is what the speech was all about it. That’s the first thing that I expect when I see some high profile crime like this.
TheNaBr (0c7c2f) — 7/8/2016 @ 10:42 amPresident Troll gotta troll. Obviously, none of the MSM will ask the question that should always be asked of those who shill for gun control before the bodies of the victims are cold: “What law are you advocating that would have prevented what happened today?”
M. Scott Eiland (1edade) — 7/8/2016 @ 10:52 amAnswer: uh uh um, we need a national gun registry so that we can find all these gun owners, prosecute them for owning guns, and confiscate all the firearms like that did in Australia.
P.S. I learned about that plan in the news.
TheNaBr (0c7c2f) — 7/8/2016 @ 10:59 amJVW, it can’t be racist if it’s against whites since only whites can be racist. I denounce you!
Rev. Hoagie® (0f4ef6) — 7/8/2016 @ 11:06 amAt least one of the officers killed in the line of duty appears to have been Latino, but I’m sure the NY Times will come along any moment now and tell us that he was in fact a “white Hispanic.”

narciso (732bc0) — 7/8/2016 @ 11:20 amDo Lynch and Obama really believe their cumbaya approach is going to make all white people suddenly say “By golly you are right – we are biased beyond all recognition and equally responsible for every bad thing that happens to a black person. What can we do to help build the bridge?” to which the BLM movement would immediately issue a statement saying “The struggle has been won. Let’s join hands drop the vitriol and sing give peace a chance!”
Good lord almighty. Obama built this and now he has to maintain it to keep it from exploding….
In California there are Latin gang members targeting black gang members. Looks like this will be a summer to rival 1968….
spokanebob (6797b5) — 7/8/2016 @ 11:24 amEarlier (but opast noon) on WABC 770 AM in New York Ron Kuby said one things we have not been hearing is the mantra, “to stop bad guys with guns you need good guys with guns” – because here you had good guys with guns.
A female voice on the radio at the same time said, in a manner to semi-correct him, that it was an ambush.
Ron Kuby said the name Xavier doesn’t seem to fit/have anything to do – something like that with Black Muslims. He once made that mistake many years ago when he was about 18. There was somebody with the name Xavier and he thought that X was something like Malcolm X. Somebody had to tell him that the Catholics have been using that for a very long time.
The 3 peopple who weer arrested who are not talking sound like accomplices, not shooters, although maybe it could include one or more.
Was the plan that Micah Xavier Johnson was going to take the responsibility/credit for all of it? If so, did anybody involved seriously think that really could fly?
Sammy Finkelman (88f52d) — 7/8/2016 @ 11:26 am8. Is the 2nd one a “step” Latino (two with last names, but one a little more obvious than the other). Begs the question – when (as in what time of the day yesterday) was Geronimo Yanez named as the Minnesota police officer in question? He had described as Asian (may still be a Fillipino with that name) in previous reports.
urbanleftbehind (5eecdb) — 7/8/2016 @ 11:26 am1.And yes, there are initial unsubstantiated reports on some websites that the shooter was affiliated with a local mosque
kishnevi (870883) — 7/8/2016 @ 11:28 amThe report linked in the comments to the other thread said it was a Nation of Islam mosque.
Meaning the motive would have been racism pure and simple, not jihadism.

Colonel Haiku (236f6f) — 7/8/2016 @ 11:31 amI remain horrified that TFG got re-elected. The 3rd week in January can’t come soon enough.
Colonel Haiku (236f6f) — 7/8/2016 @ 11:33 amSeriously Angela Davis wasnt available, try bobby sale.
narciso (732bc0) — 7/8/2016 @ 11:36 am…then NOI, like the sleazy horndog lawyer version of LaRaza, should seek a name change. I think had the Nation of Islam had its feet to the fire pressed harder, many of its members would have slithered back to Sunday services for the Lawd.
urbanleftbehind (5eecdb) — 7/8/2016 @ 11:37 amWhen haven’t “people” been armed with [relatively] powerful weapons? The operative word in this hypothetical argument isn’t “when”, nor is it “[powerful] weapons”, rather it is “people”. In Obama’s fairy land, only men of great integrity, bureaucrats and political operatives mainly, “people” like James Comey, or Lon Horiguchi, will be armed with powerful weapons, and peace will reign over all the land. This future would be similar to much of history where the elite had monopolies on armor and weapons, and the rest were consigned to serfdom, or certain death, a death often prolonged and highly public to encourage proper respect for the ruling elite.
The reality is that weapons, powerful weapons, will be with us forever. And even if Obama gets every law-abiding person to turn in their weapons, many will not. These will be, by definition, the non-law-abiding citizens. And among these “many”, there will be a large number who continue to present a threat to every policeman who is just out fulfilling his quota of traffic tickets to keep the metropolitan slush fund solvent, or who is called upon to intervene in a domestic dispute. The police will continue to exercise extreme “caution” and innocents, like the baby who had a flash-bang thrown in her crib, or the two men gunned down by the police this week, will continue to be slaughtered. The death toll of innocents may not change at all.
The solution is to have functional schools that prepare everybody for work in a modern society. A society in which each person has the satisfaction and pride of knowing that he or she has earned their way, and knowing that they have alternatives if the present job doesn’t work out well. This will not happen as long as progressives, Democrats especially who are beholden to teachers unions, make policy. Instead we will devolve into a morass where the underclass will be required to demonstrate their poverty in order to obtain their government handouts, and the only way to supplement this meager existence will be black market transactions. Which will create a large and steady demand for weapons. Which will be provided across our open borders even if Obama seizes every gun in every tax paying citizen’s household.
This dystopian future is becoming more and more likely as one piece after another falls into place.

Nah – the NYT will be all over the Latino factor, in order to argue that the shooter(s) was/were shooting at cops generally, rather than white cops specifically.

urbanleftbehind (5eecdb) — 7/8/2016 @ 11:50 amDoes the Nation of Islam still exist even? Aren’t they all Sunni Muslims now, like Muhammad Ali and Kareem Abdul Jabbar, or is there some splinter that isn’t? That splinter group would be Louis Farrakhan I guess.
The SPLC profile seems to be somwwhat out of date. The latest they have is an affiliation with the New Black Panther Party and a 2005 Millions More March still in the planning stages and Farrakhan having prostate cancer.
https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/group/nation-islam
The Anti-Defamation League website doesn’t seem to have anything past December 2013, with Farrakhan not ceding leadership after a heart attack. The prostate cancer was in 1999. In 206, Farrakhan had actually said he was relinquishing leadership. Ishmael Muhammad is apossible successor bit o also is W.D. Mohammed, except he is supporting Ishmael Muhammad and claimed, in a lecture at the Clinton Presidential Library in Arkansas, on August 10, 2007 that Ishmael Muhammad is poised to “clear up the destruction of the religion in the Nation of Islam.”

This took place just a few blocks away from Dealey Plaza, where President Kennedy was killed. The gunfire started at about 9 pm (central time) One policeman shot a shooter but the shooter was protected by a Kevlar vest. He must have been trained, but claimed later, or one person beleived to be involved, Micah Xavier Johnson, claimed later, that he belonged to no organization, and hat he was he only shooter.
This is the most law enforcement people killed in a single incident since September 11, 2001.

Sammy Finkelman (643dcd) — 7/8/2016 @ 1:09 pmMany of my Black friends complain that the police patrol aggressively in Black neighborhoods, which leads to confrontations with Black people. They ask why the police don’t behave similarly in White neighborhoods. this is my reply:
First of all, the police patrol aggressively in Black communities because that is where the crime is. They are trying to protect innocent Black people from crimes committed by criminal Black people. Secondly, if the police were in White neighborhoods instead of Black neighborhoods, the complaint would be …”the police aren’t protecting Black people because they are racist!”.
You want to solve the problem of police killing Black people? Solve the problem of Black youth violence and crime. Restore what used to be two vital institutions in the Black community..the church and the family. Stop glorifying rap and thug culture.

Rev. Hoagie® (0f4ef6) — 7/8/2016 @ 4:04 pmNow they are saying there was only one shooter. The 3 people arrested last night are now assumed to have no connection to the shooting. What Mayor Rawlings, interviewed on the CS Evening News seemed to think is there remained the possibility of a co-conspirator, a trainer, somebody who knew. And they still want any pictures or video they can get – that’s probably on autopilot.
It started with 5 shots and then there was a pause, and then more. About 800 people were present, at a time when the protest was ending, aet about 8:45 pm central time. Many of the people there began videotaping what was happening and much has been posted online. One photographer says he ddi it first, to let his family know he was still safe – he was within a few yards and saw ricochets – and then to let people know to stay away. I suppose he must have been live streaming it, otherwise that doesn’t make sense.
I know that there is always a tendency these days to estimate or worry that there might be more shooters, but what bothers me is that I would hope people could tell whether or not the shooting is all coming from one place. We now have these weapons that can fire many bullets one after the other. They were not common 35 years ago or so. It’s these weapons that should just be taken off the market. Not even the police should have them. Or they should be taxed to make them much more expensive. I don’t know in what kinds of circumstances police would need them and also feel free to use them. Of course, their presence or absence only ups or lowers the ante. But that’s worth doing.
Sammy Finkelman (88f52d) — 7/8/2016 @ 4:06 pmMicah Xavier Johnson, 25, was a veteran of Afghanistan, and spent 6 years in the military, getting out just over a year ago. When police searched his home in Mesquite, they found an arsenal there, and also writings like one thing he labeled a personal combat journal. And also bomb making material, or what he may have hoped could be made into bombs.
One thing that disturbed Micah Xavier Johnson was white people killing poor, innocent dolphins. He opined (online?) that white people were very cruel to kill such creatures.
The feds say there is no evidence of an overseas terrorism link. I kind of hate that phrase “no evidence.” That’s not the same as “no reason to believe” although there may be here no reason to believe that yet. Flags have been put at half staff at the white House and other federal buildings and military posts. also at the U.S. Capitol.
Sammy Finkelman (88f52d) — 7/8/2016 @ 4:07 pmToday both Obama and Hillary announced they have discovered the cause for the killings in Dallas.
It was due to the hateful anti black Muslim video that also caused the death of the four Americans in Benghazi.
Both Obama and Hillary vowed that if Hillary is elected president, she will find and prosecute the person or persons responsible and bring them to justice.
Pts (ce7fc3) — 7/8/2016 @ 4:10 pmToo many cities, including New York, are now mandating that officers patrol in pairs (does that apply to highway traffic too?) which is a real pverreaction if this was the workof only one person.

That link above gives a whole different view of the event in MN, like the fellow was stopped because he looked like an armed robbery suspect and had a hand gun visible, and there is no record of him even applying for a permit,

narciso (732bc0) — 7/8/2016 @ 7:36 pmThe site was Conservative Treehouse, which offered up a story a few months ago that did not pan out. But there is nothing inherently improbable and actually much of it does not directly conflict with the original narrative. Broken tailight may be the excuse for stopping and the BOLO the real reason, etc. The hairstyle and beard are similar enough in my view.
But both this and the Louisiana case will sink out of view now.

narciso (732bc0) — 7/8/2016 @ 8:21 pmAllen West likes Conservative Treehouse. This is not an endorsement, from me, of the site. I think West can tend toward being a bit credulous.
However, I linked to it mostly because I knew it had links to all of the attacks on police within the last day. Aside from that, even though I believe MD is probably right and the guy who was shot was probably not an armed robber, it does establish that the police were investigating a robbery, which may partially explain, if not excuse, the officer’s possible overreaction.
It is odd that the girlfriend claimed they were stopped for a broken taillight when they had working taillights. Plus, she never said anything about them being stopped as robbery suspects. Possibly the officer didn’t want to spook them and made up a story about a taillight? Or is it that she was lying? I don’t know.
Interesting though. It will come down to her credibility vs. the officers, as well as any video/audio and other witnesses (the shooting cop’s partner) the police have.
But sure, take their theory with a grain of salt.

Once again we see that it is the left, the progressives, the purveyors of approved thought, the protected ones, the Democratic Party constituents who engage in lethal violence.
Five decent police offers now lie dead, with more struggling to live. The day before this atrocity, of course, the Progressive Supreme Commander, off on some pointless trip to Europe, and his minions, e.g., the dimwitted governor of Minnesota, the Congressional Black Caucus, lectured us on our racism and on the need to reflect on our society, etc. In fact, even after this massacre, we have the usual idiots, and, of course, I do mean Reverend Jesse “Never Waste an Opportunity for Some Press” Jackson still going on and on about Trump and white racism. Not a broken taillight stop, but in reality an All Points Bulletin Be On the Look Out for an armed robbery suspect (as confirmed by the recording to the dispatcher). That’s the first lie Diamond told.
The second one was her crook doesn’t have a CCW to reach for, but he did have a gun sitting in his lap (as confirmed by Diamonds video). Which is her second lie.
I’m not doubting her tears. :eyeroll: Of course she didn’t have any tears. Shocked but not grief stricken. That’s a clue. She knew it would happen. She knew the path Castile was on. They had discussed it many times.

I agree with you that skittish people should not be police,
But for a moment,
From what I know,
The recording made by the friend shows a firearm and we here the officer say “I told him to put his hands up”.
Maybe we will find police guilty of a mistake,
maybe even criminally negligent,
but if it turns out that the fellow really had a gun within grabbing distance, and he didn’t put his hands up when told (repeatedly?),
what is he supposed to do?
I guess Walker would have knocked him out (leaving no mark) or simply reach in and put some submission hold on him,

He was accused of sexual harassment while he was there (although I don’t know if the case originated from events earlier) and nearly received a less than honorable discharge. The case file is dated May, 2014. His army lawyer, Bradford Glendening, who was assigned to represent him when he (was?)returned to Texas, advised him to waive his right to a hearing in exchange for a reduction in charges, which he did.
He was in the Junior Officer Training Corps while in high school in Mesquite, Texas and joined the Army Reserve in March 2009 (which might have been shortly before graduating – I don’t know how this works.)
He was a member of the 420th Engineer Brigade, which is based in Seagoville, Texas (like Mesquite, east of Dallas) and he was a carpentry and masonry specialist. He was in Afghanistan from November 2013 to July 2014.
The woman who complained about him requested “a protective order against Pfc Johnson pertaining to myself, my family, home, restaurant and any oher place of residence I may reside at, ” and recommended he should receive “mental help.”
I don’t know what he might have done in regard to Afghans, but there was nothing thar resured in charges apparently.

The Dallas Police Department apparently is top quality.
The New York Times reports that the overall number of police shootings in Dallas has dropped substantially since David O. Brown became police chief in 2010. This has gone even to extent of being wary of foot chases.
There are still a few. A (mentally disturbed) person holding a screwdriver was fatally shot last year.
By the way, just a few weeks after he became police chief, his own son killed a man in what the New York Times calls a random attack, and then killed a police man (and apparently was killed himself too, although the New York Times doesn’t directly say so)
nk (dbc370) — 7/9/2016 @ 5:31 am
But how do you screen them out? It occurs to me that maybe it should be easy for someone to beg off some form of duty, or even the job, without losing too much.
Sammy Finkelman (c82029) — 7/10/2016 @ 3:43 amThere’s a report that that cop at the Barton Roiuge shooting may have known he did wrong.
(To recap, hhere was a report that a man selling CDs outside a store had threate3ned someone with a gun. Two policeman went to that location and found aman selling CDs. For some reason they attempted to arrest him. He resisted. One cop then spotted that the man had a gun in his pocket. He shouted that he had a gun. Duh. The second cop then, even though he had him pinned down on the ground and the man was showing no signs of pulling out his gun, shot him at point blank range in the chest.)
