What Trumpers Like Mike Cernovich Aren’t Telling You About Amanda Carpenter

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:48 am

I was going to take up nk’s idea of a one-word post that says “Trump” — but I actually have something to say today. Dang it.

I’m not doing a step-by-step debunking of all the junk surrounding the National Enquirer story. But there’s one guy out there, Mike Cernovich, who is spreading misinformation about it. By ripping stuff out of context, Cernovich sees “smoke” where there is nothing but fumes from dry ice. Example:

This is actually false, as you can see. Carpenter does not call Cruz “Daddy.” She calls him “Daddy Cruz” — and why might that be? Look at the date on her tweet: December 22, 2015. Was there anything happening that day that involved the Washington Post and Ted Cruz as a father of actual daughters? Hmmmmmm:

Because the cartoonist deleted the tweet, you’ll have to look at Dana’s December 22, 2015 post to remind yourself of what it said. Fortunately, Dana had the screenshot:

Untitled-1

Before the cartoonist deleted it, it was an animated GIF of Cruz pulling his daughters like monkeys on leashes. Something that made Daddy Cruz angry at the Washington Post.

But Cernovich now has his false narrative that has Carpenter calling Cruz “Daddy” as in “WHO’S YOUR DADDY” and he runs with it in other out-of-context tweets:

AMANDA AND “DADDY” CRUZ GOT MATCHING TATTOOS!!!1! BusTED AMIRITE?!?!?!!!!!1!!!

Except, looking at the date on the tweets might help: April 1, 2014. Carpenter worked for Cruz back then, and the staff all decided to get these Winston Churchill tattoos, and have Cruz pretend on TV that his was permanent, as a joke. An . . . April Fool’s joke.

These are just examples. There’s more: photoshops of Carpenter putting condoms on her [UPDATE: supposedly balancing a wrapped condom on the shoulder of her dress, to clarify]; pretending that Carpenter is wearing Cruz’s jacket in one of the photos above when it is a woman’s elbow-length jacket with ruched sleeves; and so on.

It’s shameful what these people are doing. But low-information folks might take nonsense like Cernovich’s as convincing. It’s like a lot of what Trump says: it’s total crap if you think about it for one moment. So I figured it was worth taking that moment to set forth the context that folks like Mike Cernovich aren’t giving you.

UPDATE: Also, there is security camera footage of Corey Lewandowski grabbing Michelle Fields, truthers. Enjoy. He has been charged with battery. It deserves its own post but no time this morning.

  1. Prepare for the usual onslaught on weird Trumpkins playing Twister with the truth, Patterico.

Wouldn’t it be nice if they all discussed policy? But since they can’t…well…all they have is sleaze.

Speaking of policy, you should check this out:

At least Trump didn’t lose his temper. But he sure looks pretty…well…dim.

Then there’s the other side. We have on one hand a serial felon. This is beyond any doubt. She just doesn’t belong in prison, she needs to face a firing squad. Or not to be unconstitutitionally cruel and unjust a needle. And, then, a communist giving her a run for her ill-gotten money.

This is being covered by the LHMFM as if it’s normal.

If anyone thinks we’ve hit rock bottom with Trump all I can say is we still have a formerly unimaginable long way to go.

  33. Rick Ballard,

It’s amazing to that Trump supporters can so easily believe that Ted Cruz has had oodles of affairs (with no proof) and yet they cannot believe that Lewandowski put his hands on one female reporter.

  35. I wonder if the Trumpkins will continue to say that Michelle Fields “made it up.”

    Cruz Supporter (102c9a)

  36. It is discouraging that even with the explanations provided by Patterico all the usual suspects still find these lies grist for their mills. I especially like #5, “he started it”, but of course we know a “she” started it; and #20 which suggests that because a lady is attractive, Cruz is required to provide an explicit denial of infidelity.

The “he/she” confusion is at best a 3rd grade taunt assuming the guilty party was accurately identified. As it is, it is a mindless utterance.

The demand for a denial is actually much worse. There are about 170,000,000 females in the U. S., and if only 1% are attractive, the 1.7 million denials this fool is requiring of Cruz would take about 17 million seconds if each denial takes 10 seconds. With 28,800 seconds in a working day, this testimonial would take 590 working days, which would essentially end Cruz’s campaign. Which is the goal. Any means to the end, comrade?

    BobStewartatHome (a52abe)

  37. And most important, Bob, these folks cannot think infidelity is a big deal…or they would not be Trump supporters, given his tawdry history.

So they just want their guy, by any means necessary.

Which puts them in interesting company.

  40. As for the battery, I have seen several videos of several angles, sped up and slowed down. She is in a crowd, she is checked in her progress for a moment, her face does not show pain, she does not fall to the ground.

It is only after that, when talking about it to a comrade, someone says, “threw you down”. And it is blown up from there.

It is also very difficult to tell if Lewandowski is positioned to touch her at all, or if it is the security guard, or if she just checks her motion.

She has a prior history of taking a fall and making more of it than it should be.

I can’t imagine a jury convicting, but what do I know.

Thoughtless supporters are better understood through perusal of Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds with the understanding Mackay did not adequately identify the impact of the penny press (internet) in creating the bubbles described.

  54. Here is what I find interesting: no matter what Trump himself reveals about his character – or lack thereof – his loyalists will not budge in their assessment of him. No matter how much he plays fast and loose with the truth, how much he lies, flip-flops or dishonestly smears his opponents, they still don’t see that these behaviors indicate a serious character flaw that should at the very least, give them pause. It just doesn’t matter, because no matter what, they will support him. Which begs the question to Trump supporters: where is your line of demarcation? What would it take for you to pull your support from Trump? Is there a line?

Most people, if provided evidence of said character deficits in their candidates or politicians would, at the very least, give careful consideration as to whether or not they could continue their support of such a person.

At one time, this is what separated us from the left. We weren’t compelled to remain loyal to a candidate or politician because they were one of us or had an “R” after their name.

  59. Simon Jester’s link @ 43 is a must-read. I think it accurately explains the Trump seduction of the American voter.

“If you have ever been truly seduced, you know. You’ll excuse anything your seducer says, the very things you would have always found repellent.”

I would add that I also think that Trump loyalists want revenge. They are not happy with a solid candidate like Cruz because he doesn’t promise to exact revenge on the guilty (establishment Republicans, the party itself, the left, Democrats, the upper classes…). They want blood first and foremost, not good governance or a restoration of American values and solid policies. That’s secondary. First and foremost, revenge. The promise of payback seems to be the greatest seduction of all.

    Rick Ballard (698c22)

  64. #38: Carlitos, unless you wrote #5, my “he” probably has nothing to do with you. I assumed that the “he” in #5 was Cruz, and the “started it” was the placement of the PAC ad featuring a picture of Trump’s wife by a “she” who is not Cruz. The problem with posting a five word statement that uses two pronouns is that the reader must consider the author and fill in the missing links in order to make any sense of the statement.

    BobStewartatHome (a52abe)

  65. This is exactly right. It’s all about spite. They want to burn down the house to save it.

True, spite or revenge is a large motivator but it seems to me they want both Trump AND also to burn down the neighborhood. Two things. Trump will build the neighborhood back up after it’s destroyed. What will it look like? They don’t care since whatever he does – literally whatever – is better than what it is now.

What does he know about policy? They don’t care. What does he know about governing? They don’t care. What is his temperament, his makeup? He’s tough – he angers the right people – and that’s enough.

But if they can’t get Trump they still want to burn it down. Spite, revenge.

These are not conservatives or liberals: they truly are radicals.

    SteveMG (0f086c)

  66. #54, Dana, I saw Gingrich interviewed on Fox New last night, and he seemed to be walking back his support of Trump. He emphasized the need for any candidate to behave in such a way that the general public would regard him as presidential. And this was in response to a question about the tenor of Trump’s campaign.

I think Trump really hurt himself with that childlike twitter blast directed at Heidi Cruz coupled on the next day with the Trump-nation rumor mongering about Cruz. The latter, of course, being the fulfillment of threats by Trump to ruin Cruz’s reputation on several earlier occasions.

Mike Cernovich, author of Gorilla Mindset, has been read by millions of people. Although he wrote Gorilla Mindset with men in mind, many women are catching on, as they also want to live a more powerful life.

By applying Gorilla Mindset to your life, you will improve your health and fitness, earn more money, and have stronger relationships.

Your thinking will become clear. Your posture will improve. You will have more focus. People will respect you.

There are chapters on routine, self-talk, frame, focus, state/mood, mindfulness, and body language and posture. Each chapter contains techniques, mindset shifts, and habits that can be applied to your life.

For example, improving your self-talk will improve your state or mood. How you frame challenges in your life is also a matter of the language – or self-talk – you use.

Getting in the moment improves your self-talk just as your self-talk helps you get into the moment.

At the end of Gorilla Mindset you’ll tie every concept together to live a life others don’t even dare dream of.

But you will dream of that life.

    You will live that life

We are at the point where, as the Instapundit says, promises that can’t be kept won’t be. Debts that can’t be paid won’t be. Something that can’t go on forever will stop.

The faster the destruction happens the gentler it can be.

It would be nice to have a genetic conglomeration of Reagan, Washington. Jefferson, Genghis Khan, and Ayn Rand (you pick the other 5) like Serpentor from the GI Joe cartoon.

But we don’t have that. We have a master persuader bankruptcy expert and a constitutional conservative without support from either across the aisle or in his own party.

I wish I could blend the two but if wishes were horses beggars would ride.

    luagha (fdedbc)

  73. Cliche or not, this has been for some time the “Idiocracy” election. America is swirling the historical drain, and the growing tendency of gossipy distraction nonsense over actual pertinent foundational political issues ensures the ship of state will disintegrate on the sharp coral reef of reality.

Clinton is a corrupt, evil hag who knowingly violated national security with her bathroom unsecured server to avoid FOIA requests into the bribery via Clinton Foundation shenanigans while she pretended to be SecState.

Sanders is the reincarnation of the shiftless, lazy scumbag Marx…demanding that people who work hard be forced to give him and his mob of selfish, historically illiterate hipsters more and more “free” government stuff.

Trump is a con-man who has managed to ride the zeitgeist of the national anxiety and anger over illegal immigration, a horrible Keynesian economy, cowardice in the face of the rise of islamic jihad, and distaste of the effeminate devolution of American national character.

Kasich is a washed-up political has been whose early-onset senility has led him to betray all of his previous Reagan era conservative principles in favor of the fetid insipidness that “Christian compassion” requires one to be happy to have the government forcibly relieve one of most of their income to pay for others to sit on their entitled assess accusing me of being ‘privileged’.

Cruz doesn’t have Reagan’s smooth delivery, nor the warmth that so frustrated the collectivist progs. Should these unproven scurrilous allegations of his infidelity be true, (which I have a hard time believing that Cruz could have been so stupid – and this is nothing but a smear) I do not believe in this era of reality TV that someone who made his principles – especially his CHRISTIAN principles – such a huge part of his campaign can recover politically.

You can read Trump supporters everywhere gleefully and viciously sneering at Cruz over this unproven smear, openly admitting that they don’t care if Trump cheated on any of his wives. Losers like Huckabee, and hell even Tom Delay, who KNOW that the Enquirer’s legalistic wording of their innuendo (‘There are RUMORS that Cruz may have had multiple mistresses’, or ‘People are talking about the rumors…’) make it virtually impossible for Cruz to win a lawsuit, yet they pontificate that Cruz would be suing ‘if the allegations aren’t true’

In listening to people describe their rationalizations for which candidate they support, I become evermore convinced that our constitutional republic has at most 15-20 years before chaotic upheaval. The admiration of individual achievement has been tossed away in favor of the desperate craving to be a submissive part of the hivemind.

The Cruz campaign is like the Space Shuttle: lots of intricate parts and pieces working in a fine fashion, but if it loses one ceramic tile or a faulty o-ring turns up its coming to Earth real quick with no crew surviving.

It would still burn up with five tiles gone but it really only takes one.

Actually, it’s Corey Lewendowski who should have been fired. He lied to the American people, trashing Ms Fields, saying this not only didn’t happen but that she was deranged. The Trump campaign trashed a victim and showed no integrity.

Sure, Lewendowski did not throw the woman across the room, but he badly bruised her arm. If someone grabbed you and bruised your arm like that, you’d probably think they should face consequences.

I remember when this accusation came out and Trump’s fans were saying this was BS because the cops weren’t involved. They said it was another guy who touched her, or she was never touched, and if she was there would be video. They took the Trump campaigns lies, yet again, as gospel. Now, of course, the goalposts have shifted. The DA is pressing charges based on video proving the Trump campaign lied, and the Trump fans say this proves the DA should be fired.

    Dustin (2a8be7)

  106. And the goalposts will need to shift again, Trump fans.

You’re up in arms that charges are being pressed against Trump’s man who roughed up reporters, because the video didn’t show her collapse to the floor immediately, the new standard for assaults.

Yet Trump is demanding charges be filed for assault against Fields, the roughed up reporter, with Trump as the victim.

Everything victim of Trump is illegitimate. Every situation leaves Trump the true victim. Just like with Trump’s trashing of Cruz’s family, Trump is the real victim.

    What a coward.

    Dustin (2a8be7)

  109. The A-10 vs Space Shuttle metaphor make some sense, I guess, if you think of it as about integrity rather than the campaigns.

Trump’s integrity is like an A-10. No one trusts him anyway, so every lie he tells, every awful thing he does, means nothing to his success. It changes nothing. How do you trash a guy who has cheated America for decades, and treated his own family like garbage?

Cruz’s entire reason for being a credible force in politics is his integrity. He’s here because he kept his promises and has championed this country’s concept of rights and limited power. If you stain his integrity, it really hurts him.

No wonder Trump has been calling Ted Cruz a liar for months now, one discredited attack after another. Every time it’s shown Trump was dishonest, it has no cost to him. Any time Cruz can’t prove himself innocent, it costs him a little bit.

Oh no, some girl on the campaign got a fake tattoo. She must be Cruz’s mistress! So vote for the guy who actually brags about his mistresses! Because as happyfeet says above, Cruz actually says appears to be religious.

In idiocracy, they kept saying the only guy with normal intelligence sounded ‘faggy’. They hated him even though they needed him. Being a decent person was itself proof he was somehow stuck up and needed to be brought down.

  115. Good catch on the “Daddy Cruz” tweet context. As for the “photoshopped” condom photo? It was still on her personal instagram as recently as yesterday (maybe still is). People are adjusting the contrast in the “enhanced” photos. Not sure if the enhanced photos are altered but the original was obviously not since it was still posted on her own account (Unless that was some spoof account). Patterico also leaves out the odd tweet about eating cheese with a “friend” while working late in a hotel room at 3:00 am (Cruz’s favorite food is cheese), which some have claimed she has since deleted. Of course, none of this conclusive at all. Who knows. I’ll assume the allegations are false but you can’t say there aren’t a few odd tweets/photos. People on both sides are far too eager to rush to judgment.

As far as the Corey “battery.” I expect better from a prosecutor, Patterico. Considering how close she was to Trump and that she was actually touching him, the minimal force Corey used was more than justified. Um, Trump is calling for prosecution! He claims he’s the victim of assault. Suggests she had a weapon or something. https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/714898756420939780

But you’re wrong. What happened to Fields is assault and would get you arrested in all 50 states. Grabbing a woman so hard that you leave bruises where your fingers crushed her arm is assault. You don’t have to actually knock something down or throw them across the room or punch them. In fact, merely making someone think you’re about to hurt them is assault in my state.

It’s not at all deranged to prosecute, which is why the professionals who investigated this case are prosecuting. They aren’t part of some conspiracy.

Corey Lewendowski’s behavior shows he knows he’s guilty. Instead of fessing up that he grabbed the reporter, he lied, and said he never made contact with her, and she’s a nut. Then video proves it’s the Trump campaign that is lying, as usual. Instead of apologizing and facing the consequences like a man, he decided to trash the victim, knowing Trump’s fans would never care if he was caught anyway.

MD, that actually sounds plausible! Doesn’t really mitigate things in my mind. Corey knew he hurt that woman. Maybe in the heat of the moment he grabbed harder than he meant, in anger, but when he saw the pictures of that arm, he knew what he did and instead of being a man about it, he doubled down and attacked her. These guys are even saying Fields and Cruz were having an affair.

At the end of the day, this woman didn’t even have her job anymore. And all Trump’s fans can say is that this is no big deal, while any hiccup Cruz makes is a huge deal.

Someone had grabbed me tightly by the arm and yanked me down. I almost fell to the ground, but was able to maintain my balance. Nonetheless, I was shaken.

Your selective bolding shows you’re not being very fair. She says she kept her balance, and you’re suggesting her keeping her balance on video shows she’s a liar. The video actually backs up what she says happened pretty accurately. Better than most victims recall their assaults. The man did grab her.

She says she was grabbed tightly. We see the bruising and we see who grabbed her.

How many women have you left bruises like that on?

You say Fields is the liar, but Corey said he never laid a finger on her, and the video proves he lied about this. You don’t take any offense at that.

She says: “but before he could answer I was jolted backwards. Someone had grabbed me tightly by the arm and yanked me down. I almost fell to the ground, but was able to maintain my balance. Nonetheless, I was shaken.”

  155. Video completely dismissed this fiction.

Rodney, with all due respect, you’re coming across as a hack here. The video actually represents what Fields said happened pretty closely. It’s not unusual for an assault victim to get details totally wrong, but in this case, she really is grabbed, and you can tell it’s pretty hard and she seems to stumble a bit, but maintains her balance. That’s exactly what she said happened.

Yet someone did lie about this video. You don’t mention this at all, even though you’re crying liar over this. Corey said it just didn’t happen.

As to “how hard he grabbed her” and “who made those bruises” ….. let us assume he did and did so with force. I see bruises far worse on me from banging into furniture.

Leaving bruises on someone, on purpose, is a serious crime. Dismissing it as nothing is a terrible way to support your candidate. This isn’t you banging furniture and I don’t think bruising women like this happens on the subway.

I think what really happened is that Corey got mad at a reporter, hurt her, lied about it, and the cops are pressing charges. Trump’s fans somehow have found a way to make this the reporter’s fault.

    I say Ms Fields

Corey said it didn’t happen at all.

Fields said it happened basically as the video does.

But Trump needs to be protected, so Corey is the victim.

    Ted’s non-denial denial

I think the reason Ted Cruz did not give a specific, point by point, allegation by allegation denial, is that he thought this is one of those things where if you say it is not true, it’s in the nature of things for people not to believe you. Things like that can’t actually be denied effectively.

    Sammy Finkelman (0c6103)

  159. Rodney King’s got a good point—guys try to tackle Tom Brady in football games all the time. And did you see the way Holly Holm hit Ronda Rousey several months ago?

    Rodney King’s Spirit (a089dc) — 3/29/2016 @ 2:26 pm

And Trump praises his campaign management for lying to you.

She said “Someone had grabbed me tightly by the arm and yanked me down. I almost fell to the ground”

She did stumble a bit, and the grab was clearly very hard. Not only can you see it in how she take a moment to get her balance, you can see it in the photo of the bruises of each of Corey’s fingers on the arm of the woman he assaulted.

She didn’t say he knocked her to the ground. She said she was not knocked to the ground, and that she maintained her balance. You are simply ignoring this and noting the video shows her maintain her balance as though she claimed she was thrown down. She simply didn’t say that.

The assault was clearly very painful, and victims often remember details incorrectly. I’m honestly impressed with how accurate Fields’s account was. You’ve tried pretty hard to twist this around to her claiming she was knocked over, while forgiving the guy who said it didn’t happen at all.

This woman wasn’t just assaulted, but she was slandered by her own employer, the Trump hacks at Brietbart, and slandered by Trump’s campaign management, and she now has no job. Your moral compass is pretty worthless.

  162. LBJ used to joke that he would make his opponents deny they slept with a pig. Now Cruz is too smart to play that game.

Sure, they assaulted that reporter, but she’s the liar. She said she almost lost her balance, and the video can’t prove this true. It may closely resemble her account and prove the Trump account to be 100% a lie, but people get bruises all the time so it’s OK to bruise women.

When you can dissemble like that, why not lie some more? Say Cruz had a harem of women. Sure, almost all of that is proven false, but you can’t prove everything, so he’s guilty. Sure, Trump was a proud cheater who built an empire of sleaze, but Cruz is not, and did not, so Trump’s fans look down on the honest man and lie some more.

He says lawyers pay him to ghostwrite things and he passed the California Bar Exam after studying for less than 40 hours (the first time or he second time?) He says he had to re-take it because he was falsely accused of rape. He works for himself and hasn’t had a W-2 form in a dozen years. He says he wrote several entries for the Encyclopedia of American Civil Liberties and his legal writing was cited in two separate federal court opinions and in academic journals. He said he once got over $1 million for something or other and could retire. His real love is his website.

If someone does not want to pay him what he wants he just won’t deal with them (that seems to be the meaning of numbers 27 and 28)

He doesn’t say who’s paying him for all of this, or even if anyone is paying him.

  165. I naturally get a little White Knighty and I may be doing that here. I hope it’s not too annoying as I think my comments are very repetitive and are responding to trolling, which has taken the thread away from its original topic.

But hitting women is not cool. All decent men go their entire adult lives without doing it. A simple “NO COMMENT” would have saved Mr Lewendowski from having a record. Trump’s events have had a lot of men using fists when words would be enough. They brag about how hot Trump’s nude wife is. They aren’t men at all in my book.

I remember happyfeet used to be a substantive commenter. He’d make a lot of jokes and mock a lot of worthy targets, but he also said things that meant things. Over time, he’s had to become a clown because he’s relieved himself of his credibility. That’s what the GOP is becoming under Trump. The establishment that has rallied to Trump’s side. The fake-values guys like Ben Carson, who are OK with any level of nastiness and dishonesty in a campaign. Drudge, Brietbart, and a few others really have no credibility anymore.

The Obama administration hit the right with seven years of ruthless wedge issue after wedge issue, until we were so divided we couldn’t stand eachother. Amnesty, foreign policy, healthcare… it was very effective and it was deliberate.

Instead of talking about the specific goals of our candidates, Trump has made this about how bad his people really assaulted that reporter, and how many women can they accuse Cruz of sleeping around with. Trump knew the lefties in the media would roll with it, so any discussion of policy wouldn’t happen. I don’t think Trump has any intention of being president, though. He’s solidly ruined any chance he had at the votes of millions of republicans. No one who is leading in delegates does that.

    Dustin (2a8be7)

    Dustin (2a8be7)

  169. Dustin creating faboloso tales ….. like a Trumpster tooooooo….

    1) U ascertain from the video “She did stumble a bit, and the grab was clearly very hard.”

I see no such thing. I have watched the video like 8 times. And “stumble a bit” is classic retreat language from “jolted” “yanked” “almost falling”

    2) “you can see it in the photo of the bruises of each of Corey’s fingers on the arm of the woman he assaulted.”

I see bruises but from who are they????? Anyway, let us assume CL for arguments sakes is the culprit but now let us talk how certain folks bruise more than others regardless of how strong one’s fingers are. My personal experience is we all bruise differently regardless of the severity of the contusion impact. But go ahead …. call the expert witness MD who will equally lie for both sides to get paid $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

    3) Fields said “and yanked me down”

I see nothing showing her going “down” or simulating anything that resembles feeling like she was falling. She seems to move sideways as he grabs her and in fact looks more like he grabbed her to swing himself past her. And yes he must have grabbed her like a beast clutches a bone to chew on.

Now back to reality, truth is “he grabbed my arm” is true but everything else is blown out of proportion / fabricated to concoct an assault story where he yanked her down and she almost fell.

The video shows not one shred of evidence to her story of almost falling or even going in a downward motion. Then she uses some bruises which may or not be from CL to further polish the story to get her bonafides up up up. MD are awaiting calls for a couple grand to do expert witne$$ing.

I am also told don’t believe my lying eyes as I repeatedly watch the video. Cherry pick one fact “he grabbed her arm” and project an assault though no further evidence supports it ON VIDEO. Ignore that the person who benefits most from the lie is the victim — she is famous and that most certainly hurts her career. Oh and yes the Palm Beach DA has a great case. The evidence is compelling. Trump is to blame for everything.

May I add a common problem in our society, which we Conservatives get infuriated at, is when the Left plays the victim and uses it to bludgeon their opposition. We rail at the Media for playing along. We rail at the “faux victim” for damaging other people and institutions to extort political advantage.

But this time it is Trump so f* it. Go Cruz.

As far as the bruises, she has a history of making outlandish accusations (NY police assaulted her), so can we trust the bruises? It looks like he makes contact with he upper arm, not lower. Doesn’t make sense where the bruises are, either (if he gripped her, they’d most likely be on other side of arm). But who knows, wouldn’t say I know either way.

You get that close to a presidential candidate and even touch the candidate, a minor jostle should not come as unexpected. Assumption of risk, same as playing in a sport. She has a history of getting in people’s personal space. Look at the video of her and RFK jr. Gets in his face and then her media labels it as “handsy” when he wags his finger at her. I am disappointed that none of the leading candidates served in the military. Cruz doesn’t have significant executive experience, albeit he has a little, and Trump dodged the draft and found our vets undesirable on Park Avenue.

I don’t really know how they will handle the war on terror. It’s one of the biggest issues, and it’s shaping up to be a candidate we know has screwed it up versus a spoiled child who thinks he knows everything.

But your metaphor eventually falls apart, I think. The US Government is a behemoth. The military is complex, and has to navigate conflicting issues. Cruz has shown a command of the complex, and he’s run a terrific campaign against the entire media which has tried quite hard to make sure the GOP picks the only man Hillary can beat. Trump does not have this skill. He can’t try to run the federal government like a one winged plane, even if the idea of being the alpha badass appeals to the children out there.

    Old Reader (08f24c)

Obviously it’s a crime. The cops and the prosecutor agree, which is why he’s being charged with a crime. You can say she deserved to get those bruises because she asked Trump a question, because that’s how it is in sports, but this is the real world and you don’t get to make up rules like that after the fact.

she has a history of making outlandish accusations

Conspiracy theories. Sigh. She was part of Trump’s friendliest media outlet. You provided zero evidence she made up anything, ever. In this case we have photos, video, and witnesses backing up that she was assaulted. It happened. That’s why Trump fans have resorted to saying it’s OK that she got bruised up. Because they know she did.

Trump’s fans know she said she almost lost her balance, but they say this proves a video where she’s not thrown to the ground proves she’s a liar. The video backs up her account with remarkable accuracy and most assault victims remember things a lot worse.

What really interests me is that you guys don’t just call a spade a spade and be done with it. Admit Corey screwed up. If Trump had fired the liar and batterer he would have come across as a leader. Cruz fired a guy for something drastically more minor than this, because an executive has to have standards. Another reason I just won’t support Trump.

Believe what you want. I’ve always liked both of you in the past, I’m no nut, or hack. But the lack of common sense on this “battery” business is astonishing.

You’re a talented lawyer and you know that battery does not occur when there is an assumption of the risk or where you take part in activity where contact may occur. Get in the personal space of a presidential candidate, and a light grab to arm to pull you back isn’t battery. Sorry.

Your point about dishonesty is fairer. But if you read the denials in the context of her initial claims–where both Fields and her boyfriend claimed that Corey tried to drag her to the ground, then his flat denial makes more sense. Of course, you would think he would remember touching her and he claimed he did not even touch her. Perhaps he lied, perhaps he didn’t remember the incident.

If you really think Fields smashed her arm up as part of a conspiracy, even after video shows the assault, you need psychiatric help.

    RKS,

No, that’s exactly what Fields said. You’re just pretending she meant something she didn’t say. She said she kept her balance after someone gripped her arm. And what do we see on video? That. You’re pretending she said she fell or was knocked to the ground, but she didn’t say that at all. She said she did not lose her balance or go to the ground. Her recollection is remarkably good compared to most assault victims.

But like I said before, you’re obviously deeply invested in defending beating women, and there’s no point in engaging you. I don’t know why my point that beating women is wrong upsets you so much. If you do this to women in your life, get help.

That’s spectacularly stupid. Read the damned statute. There’s nothing there about “context.” This is just another damned Trump lie by another damned Trumpkin.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  200. Dustin,

Some of her account is certainly supported. It looks like from the lasted video that she has a bit of a balance issue. But she described it as an attempt to throw her to the ground. That’s not accurate and it’s a huge exaggeration. She also seems to feign emotion and hurt in her interviews (see the Megyn Kelly interview). But that’s just my read of her. Your mileage my differ.

She was really in Trump’s personal space, even touched him, when they had announced questions were finished. The amount of force used was reasonable under the circumstances, though I would not personally have done it. But Corey has knowledge of threats we don’t.

I do think he probably lied when he said he had not touched her (it’s true that is false, not as clear if he lied). And the Trump campaign inexplicably stuck to that story after the first videos emerged disproving that. That was stupid and another example of Trump’s campaign problems. There is a lot reasonable people can agree on here.

But it’s just crazy to think this should be a criminal matter given the circumstances. I think Beldar and Patterico will eventually realize this but their hatred for Trump has impaired their usually sound judgment.

    Old Reader (08f24c)

  201. Dustin

    pinandpuller (0845e7) — 3/29/2016 @ 4:40 pm

Trump fans agree it’s OK to beat her up, and it’s OK to smear Ms. Carpenter and Fields both as potential mistresses. They can level any accusation they want and if it’s a lie that’s OK. But if Fields levels a well evidenced accusation, enough to lead to criminal charges, she’s out of line.

They never expect more from Trump than this sort of crap. They see Trump as their side, and that’s the end of any reasoning. These are the people who have cheered the world’s monsters.

While Pinandpuller, happyfeet, and the other children are complaining about Fields going to the cops over the assault, they have no complaint about Trump claiming Fields assaulted him with a pen in her hand. If Trump were trying to prove these guys were hacks would he do anything differently?

    Dustin (2a8be7)

  203. It looks like from the lasted video that she has a bit of a balance issue.

Old Reader is right. Fields has a bit of a balance issue, when Lewndowski grips her arm, clearly very hard. It looks like he pulls her downward, but she recovers her balance without falling.

Rodney King’s Spirit claims this proves Fields is a liar, even though this is what Fields always said happens. I’ve seen a lot of the rabble claim Fields said she was knocked to the ground and then got up, and they mock her for not falling down. They claim it takes knocking a woman to the ground to make a ‘real’ assault. Merely gripping a woman’s arm and bruising it isn’t a real assault, and only wimpy women care if you do this to them.

I wonder how many boys in America are watching Trump defend beating women today, and will go on to beat women tomorrow. We all said Bill Clinton had a negative impact on the country’s ethics, and that was true, and it’s just as true today.

    Dustin (2a8be7)

  204. Beldar,

I’m not a sock puppet. Don’t care if you think so or not. You seem unhinged, frankly. Take a breath and realize reasonable people disagree with your take on this “crime.”

You’re a very smart, experienced lawyer. You know that the statute outlining the elements of the offense isn’t the whole story. Maybe there is no affirmative defense to battery in FL. I don’t know. Have you looked into it? Maybe courts have read additional elements into offense in the case law, or maybe they have defined the terms in the offense to incorporate these principles, all to avoid the insanity of creating batteries in everyday, incidental contact like Fields experienced.

Have you checked? Stop citing the statute like it’s all that matters. If you’re right, then any participant in a contact sport is a victim of battery every time he was hit in an “unwanted” manner or however the statute defines it, or every time somebody gets jostled in a busy subway terminal. Of course, that’s insane. But so is charging Corey.

Don’t act innocent. You continually act in a vulgar fashion, exaggerating, lying, and playing the “clown nose on / clown nose off” gambit.

I believe if we look at a good timeline of your comments, your lack of concern with the truth…and how you feel about Narrative…is clear. Don’t you think?

And I mean that both ways.

Seriously, dude. Look at who you are defending.

  211. Simon,

Trump has lied plenty, sure. But is Cruz any different? He complains that Trump accuses him for the PAC ad without proof but then he asserts with certainty that Trump is behind the Cuban Mistress Crisis (could be true but how would he know any more than Trump knows that Cruz approved of the Melania ad). I’ve been disappointed in both candidates in not sticking to the truth. Cruz lied about Carson. Cruz lied about supporting amnesty (or he lied about supporting in 2013, take your pick). Cruz lied about supporting TPP. Neither candidate has been much of a straight shooter, I’m afraid.

  212. When you’re charged with a crime, the relevant criminal statute is exactly what the case is about.

You know nothing of the law, and it’s pointless trying to educate you because you certainly don’t want to be educated — or, more likely, you know exactly what nonsense you’re peddling, and you’re peddling it in total bad faith.

This ends our conservations, although I may from time to time point out to other readers occasions on which I catch you again spreading lies or misinformation to promote Trump.

  214. Beldar,

I don’t know why you’re insisting on being so rude. And I don’t know why you’re insisting that the the statute is the end of the matter. Of course the statute defines the offense. My point, as you well know, is that courts flesh out the terms of the statute in case law, that affirmative offenses are not contained in the elements of the offense, and that neither of us knows the details of FL battery or how a FL court might apply the statute to the case at hand (e.g., issue a defense of others jury instruction or say that Fields had impliedly consented to minor jostling by her proximity to a presidential candidate).

I’m not your enemy or some nefarious “Trumpkin” out to spread lies and misinformation. I just don’t think Corey committed a crime and even if he did, it’s the perfect case to exercise prosecutorial discretion–that it is not a proper criminal matter.

I chuckled at the last bit at least.

Yes, grabbing a woman so hard that you bruise her, making her almost lose her balance (as the video shows) is beating a woman in my book.

Somehow these things just happen to Trump, over and over, for decades. So many ruined lives, broken deals, legal problems. Poor guy just can’t catch a break I guess.

    Dustin (2a8be7)

  218. Like I said before, vulgarity and dishonesty and a lack of seriousness about anything (other than himself) defines Trump. And many of his supporters.

If Trump was smart (and I don’t think he is), he would release a genuine and serious list of proposed Cabinet positions. If they are all smart people we could chat with, that would reassure folks. But he doesn’t. Instead, we are told he will pick…

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoy4_h7Pb3M

That’s right. Like the “great” folks who didn’t tell him Charlie Sykes was a #NeverTrump person. That’s preparation.

I have days where I am nearly certain that Trump made a deal with Clinton. Because despite Trump’s lies, there are no “large number” of polls that show him beating Hillary. He says that. Repeatedly. And he knows it’s a lie. Furthermore it is a stupid lie, since it is so checkable.

No, Trump knows he has zombie supporters in search of, well, brains. So he can say whatever he wants, and they will twitch approvingly in reflex.

There is so much Trump could do to prove he is up to the job. Notice he has no interest in doing so.

I will also add something directly: if the new metric is “everyone lies,” I will take Cruz over Trump any day. Why? The history of choices that *directly* harm others (Trump University, for one) and enrich the Comboberfuhrer.

You can say a lot of bad things about many politicians. But when you compare a wish to help others, versus a wish to line his own pockets at the expense of others…well…there you go.

I find it so fascinating and telling that Trump refuses to debate policy with Cruz.

Because he can’t. He knows how he will look: like what he is. Cruz knows it too.

    Icy (85c9e4)

  228. Simon,

I’m a Trump supporter but I share many of your same concerns. Trump needs to meet more regularly with policy experts. He needs to prep and freshen his stump speech. He needs to really prep and bring some A game for the debates. He needs to soften his message and his rhetoric. That is all true. I am hopeful we are moving in the right direction. Today, I think for the first time, Trump said repeatedly that the movement is not about him, it’s about the people and ideas. That he is just the messenger. I think he is beginning to get it. I think he’s willing to adjust his personality so that the movement can succeed.

But if the nevertrumpers think sabotaging Trump in November somehow benefits this country or conservatism, they have another thing coming. Next president will decide balance of Court for probably decades. Do we want a Hillary appointed Court? Do we want amnesty and ever-increasing immigration? Kiss a conservative majority good bye, probably forever. I’d support Cruz absolutely if he were the nominee. I hope many of you think about the future of this country and vote accordingly because Trump will be the nominee.

    Old Reader (08f24c)

  229. See, HF, you could learn from Old Reader. He supports Trump but doesn’t act like him.

As for why people pile on you, it’s because of your history of being a jackwagon on a wide variety of topics. Your recent rationale for your support of Trump has proven that you are fundamentally dishonest, and lazy. You are even reduced to saying you “hope” Trump doesn’t do the kinds of things he has been doing all of his life.

Yet you turn right around and don’t give that courtesy to other candidates who haven’t bilked people out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Who don’t refuse to answer questions. And so on.

    Hypocrite much?

The amusing part is how you continue to repeat yourself in your usual vulgar fashion, then complain when people call you on it.

“He started it” is kind of the new reality for people like you.

It’s like you are a trumpsnuffler or something.

  232. Simon,

In defense of HF and others: Lots of Trump supporters overlook a lot of gremlins with the campaign because nobody else has credibility on immigration or trade. Cruz sort of parrots Trump on these now but where was he a year ago? He was on record saying he wanted amnesty to pass, and that he wanted to increase h1bs by 5X. He supported TPP. If these issues are your priorities, there is no other show in town. Try to understand that. It doesn’t help that Cruz is first among all candidates in Wall Street donations and that Heidi is a former managing direct for Goldman Sachs. It isn’t hard to understand that lots of people don’t trust them.

    Old Reader (08f24c)

  233. Cruz won’t do well.
Even if he ought to, which he ought’nt. That’s the way it is and HF is right about him.

Trump is a stalking horse who is good at it. I think he’s going to flounce off before long but he may stay in as the perfect spoiler.

I don’t have much hope…even he last likely vain hope of brokered convention means probably a pick of detestable Ryan.

    SarahW (67599f)

  234. Old Reader, do you think it’s reasonable for people to distrust Trump, based on his track record?

    Cruz Supporter (102c9a)

  235. Dana,

My biggest issue is immigration. We are at the all time historical highs for percent of foreign born, even though our ability to assimilate has markedly declined due to political correctedness. Around 20-25 percent of workforce is foreign born. This is both an economic and cultural issue. While immigration should always be part of the American system, the current reality is we need a relief period where the percent of foreign born steadily declines to perhaps 1980 levels. It is an economic issue because the flood of migrants has depressed real wage growth for almost two decades (no real wage growth). Trump is also the only candidate to realize the threat that continued Muslim immigration poses to the West’s future. Of course American citizens should be free to practice whatever religion they want, that does not mean our immigration system must be blind to religion. It is obvious Islam, as it exists today, is in great tension with Western traditions. We should not seek to exacerbate this problem because we don’t want to hurt feelings.

Second, I think Trump is right on trade. We have run consistent trade deficits for many years and it cannot continue. This is not a fringe issue, google Warren Buffet’s 2003 article on our persistent trade deficits and how this drains our country of its wealth over time. It’s obvious that many actors such as China use currency manipulation and other barriers to block free trade while we let them get away with it–over and over. This was actually one of Romney’s talking points in 2012. But memories are short.

Trump’s bona fides on the courts–probably my second biggest issue–are of course of question. But he’s surrounded himself with conservative people and he will defer to them. And he needs the base of his party. Also, judicial candidates that align with whatever issues he is concerned with–national security for instance–are likely to be conservative on other issues.

I really hope we can unite around the nominee. If we don’t and we lose, the America we love is really lost. I truly believe that and I am not alone.

    Old Reader (08f24c)

  236. Old Reader, do you think it’s reasonable for people to distrust Trump, based on his track record?

On many issues, yes. On the issues he speaks about frequently, no. He has been talking about the USA being taken advantage of by allies for decades, same with trade. On immigration, I think his conversion is more recent. I think he’s a believer now but there isn’t a long track record. In the end, he is open to amnesty of certain “good” immigrants. I’m not opposed to that if it’s combined with border control and immigration reduction going forward. I think he is pro-gun but is probably not a straight NRA guy. Reason to be concerned there if you worry about the details there. Pro-life? No idea if that is genuine but I think we’re probably as likely to get a genuine anti-Roe appointment out of Trump as recent history of Republican presidents (so probably 50%).

I don’t fault people for choosing other candidates, provided that their reasoning makes sense. I do think people are wrong that Cruz is more electable. I think he will be crucified by the press if he is the nominee as a weirdo/fake/aspergery/dominion theology. And you better believe with Trump out of the way, MSM will be going full bore on the affairs. But I’ll support him and I’ll be happy if he wins, if it comes to that.

    Old Reader (08f24c)

  237. I’d just like to point out…the relevant Florida statute:
    784.03 Battery; felony battery.—
(1)(a) The offense of battery occurs when a person:
    1. Actually and intentionally touches or strikes another person against the will of the other; or
    2. Intentionally causes bodily harm to another person.
    (b) Except as provided in subsection (2), a person who commits battery commits a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.
(The rest of the statutes talks about what happens to repeat offenders, which Lewandowski presumably is not.)

Regardless of how anyone sees the severity of the contact between Lewandowski and Fields was, what he did, as shown in the video, is clearly misdemeanor battery under (1)(a) 1. The key idea is here is that Lewandoski grabbed Fields against her will. Now, whether a prosecutor will prosecute is a judgment call, but by the letter of the statue, it seems to me that a crime was committed.

Not a very big crime, as crimes go. Just a misdemeanor. What a coincidence; a misdemeanor is so charged. The problem, as usual, was the cover-up and “nuts and sluts” defense of Lewandowski, and, by extension, Trump. A simple apology would’ve settle that, but the Trump campaign doesn’t do apologies. No, they’re way too alpha, way too smart, for that.

    Evan3457 (057459)

  238. There is a prima facie case. It will be up to the defense to show justification or exoneration. But just enough to create reasonable doubt. Lewandowski does not have to prove himself absolutely, positively innocent. In the criminal court. In the court of public opinion …?

    nk (dbc370)

  239. nk,

There are many crimes with very easy-to-satisfy elements. Something like battery normally relies on sensible prosecutors and police to filter out the unworthy cases (this is one). This case would never be prosecuted but for the political element. Beldar is simply wrong when he says this isn’t criminalizing politics.

But you’re right that legally speaking the defense is probably an affirmative one, so that will be on Corey to prove, if the DA’s office is stupid enough to proceed.

    Old Reader (08f24c)

  240. Old Reader, it’s possible that because of the high public profile the prosecutor has already seen the police file but that’s as far as I’m betting it has gone with him. The real pre-trial of the case, and whether it will go forward, will take place when he talks to Ms. Fields, possibly not before the morning of the initial court appearance.

    nk (dbc370)

  241. NK, I agree but who knows given the profile here. But normally an investigating officer would spike something this harmless. They have their own discretion, too, particularly with low level crimes.

    Old Reader (08f24c)

  242. I was not a police officer but I did work with the police when I was with a blue ribbon crime commission. If it’s something that does not involve a victim, the police will exercise discretion like you say. But when there’s a victim who insists on signing a complaint, their hands are pretty much tied. They have to give the benefit of the doubt to the victim.

And there’s an exception to that rule too. People have been arrested, prosecuted, and sentenced up to three years in prison for filing false beyond a reasonable doubt police reports. But this is not one of those instances.

    nk (dbc370)

  243. NK,

I’m not gonna blame an officer, given the attn this case has on it, for saying probable supports “battery,” which we all know means nothing at all. But I think we are fooling ourselves if we think that in a regular case a typical officer would even bother after he saw that tape.

For the record, I think Corey was probably trigger happy here but some of you really need a wake up call. This is a presidential candidate who is probably under more threat than any candidate in the last 30 years. She was oddly close to Trump, even touched hims several times. You see the SS agents motioning at her, about to act before Corey does. It’s insanity to charge him with battery.

    Please, people, get some perspective.

    Old Reader (08f24c)

  244. Old reader,

if it was “nothing” the way to handle it was a shuffling excuse and semi apology…., clearing a path, no harm meant, so sorry, have these delicious trump steaks; Trump turned this in to a thing by calling her press whore liar and taunting her with double dog dares to file a report. A relative nothing should be smoothed over. They inexplicably went the other way.

“No video” they said. No one saw, they said- aTotal Bart Simpson defense with an ugly bully tinge. And I think we can give some weight to early reports that an admission was mad, as reported early…they just decided to lie about it.

    SarahW (67599f)

  245. Mad = made

    SarahW (67599f)

  246. One again, all the Trump folks had to do to prevent an arrest was apologize.
Instead, they went with nuts and sluts, and following the arrest, they’re doubling down on it.
    Yuge commonsense conservatism, there.
