Barack Obama: Don’t Use My Children As Pawns in the Gun Control Fight! And Now, Let’s Hear from the Children!

The NRA recently ran a television ad accusing Barack Obama of believing his kids are more important than other Americans’ kids:

Are the president’s kids more important than yours? Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools when his kids are protected by armed guards at their school? Mr. Obama demands the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes, but he’s just another elitist hypocrite when it comes to a fair share of security.

The ad’s claim appears to be wrong; Sidwell Friends, the elite school Obama’s kids attend, has security guards, but they are not armed. The error seems to trace back to this Breitbart.com piece.

Yet the NRA is right on target when it asks: “Are the president’s kids more important than yours?” Here’s why.

Start with the reaction to the NRA ad from Jay Carney:

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney excoriated the National Rifle Association Wednesday for a TV ad released by the group that called President Obama an “elitist hypocrite” because his daughters have armed protection at school.

“Most Americans agree that a president’s children should not be used as pawns in a political fight,” Carney said in a statement.

Note that Carney didn’t say children should not be used as pawns in a political fight. He said “a president’s children” should not.

Because, you see, the White House is all good with using other people’s children as pawns in a political fight:

“Ah, but those children volunteered to be pawns, er, that is, to speak their minds,” I can hear our liberal friends saying.

Well, the kids at Sandy Hook didn’t volunteer — and they are the biggest pawns of all in this political fight. “The RNC is officially on the side of more dead children,” remember?

Barack Obama doesn’t think his kids should be used as pawns in a political fight. But he’s fine and dandy using other people’s. Alive, dead, it doesn’t really matter: he’ll find ways to use both kinds! It’s all about not letting the crisis go to waste.

So. “Are the president’s kids more important than yours?” You tell me.

  8. True enough, Gazzer, but the Secret Service presence was not the point of the NRA ad. The NRA believed (because they relied on Breitbart.com) that Sidwell Friends had armed security guards, and that was a commentary on the issue of armed guards generally.

The argument that Sasha and Malia have Secret Service protection will not sway many Americans, because Americans (correctly) perceive that Secret Service personnel guarding the President are more desirable than random armed people (or even standard issue trained armed guards). That someone might want the former around their kids, if they could get them, does not necessarily mean they want the latter.

  17. I am still not happy with the notion that the Prez, his kids, Nancy Pelosi, Rosie O’Donnell, Mikey Bloomberg et al are deserving of armed guards when we, and our kids, are not. Remember, when Gabby got shot, there was a lot of talk of there being gun-free zones around politicians. As if they are more worthy than we.

  39. I have been following the liberal outrage over the NRA ad, and all I can say is, “Sauce for the goose …”.

    As far as the U.S. being the most heavily armed in the world on a per capita basis if you count privately owned weapons, that is true but misleading. Many of those guns are antiques and collector’s items. If you count access to weapons, first is Switzerland, second is Finland, third is Israel. Under that standard, the U. S. is fourth or fifth.

    1. There is a difference between using ‘the children’ as a prop or reason to make a policy change and using specific, named, children. Not to say using school kids as a prop is okay. But it’s a different level of foul, and this is hardly the first time a pol has made a speech or announcement in front of a class of kids.

    2. The Obama kids didn’t sign up to be attacked and I’d rather not see the presidential candidate pool restricted to those people who don’t have children or are willing to let them be fair game in presidential politics. The Bush twin’s under age drink should never have been a punch line on leno.

    3. The basic logic of this is flawed anyway. The level of threat against the president’s kids is not the same level of threat as against mine. The president’s life isn’t worth any more than mine or yours. But I don’t think you or I need the same body guard detail that he does.

    How do you define assault weapon, or assault style weapon, Larry? To you, are they different or the same as an assault rifle? Is that different or the same as a deer rifle? What do you know about scopes? Do you know which guns/weapons are already regulated and which are not? Do you know what a magazine or clip or cartridge is? What is an “oversized” one? Do you know how many “bullets” various popular handguns (which I assume you would not include in the “assault” category) hold?. Do you know what weapon was used at the Connecticut school?

    I am faaaar from an expert on guns and could not hold my own very long in a discussion with many of the true experts who comment here– most of whom I certainly do not consider to be “gun nuts”.

    That said, even I recognize that the level of ignorance and misinformation and fuzzy definition with respect to the “studies” and the uses and technical aspects of various weaponry makes much of the language and talking points coming from the gun-control proponents look both bogus and nuts, not to mention dishonest. You guys should at least up your game and try to know what you’re talking about if you expect to be heard about this.

    Speaking of gay, weren’t you the poster who seemed resentful the other day when I noted that Obama probably (or likely) is bisexual? That thread (about Obama throwing a baseball) died out rather quickly. But FWIW, my comment was based on at least two eyewitness accounts — among other accounts — through the years (a woman retrieving her coat following a social gathering at a private residence, and a stranger walking by a closed-off room at a convention hall), that while so-called hearsay, they have such a ring of legitimacy about them (ie, too detailed to write off), I wouldn’t bet against their accuracy.

    But what does that have to do with the topic of this thread? Well, if Obama can be as shameless and brazen when it comes to the controversy of guns and children, he sure as hell can be no less pathetic when it comes to most matters in general, both personal and public. Moreover, leftists tend to act and think like screwballs in so many ways, in so many instances, and Obama is very much of the left.

  83. JD, its really hard to make suggestions on firearms right now. The panic has made it difficult to find any particular models, and difficult to find at anything approximating a reasonable price.

    It also depends on whether you want a full Government sized, a Commander sized or god-forbid a Officer’s sized one.

    But if I found a Wilson, a Les Baer, an Ed Brown, or one of the higher end Springfield Armory Custom shop guns and had the money, I’d snap it up.

    For more of a production gun, the Springfield Armory mid-priced lines are good.

    Mr. Feets – They are one of things you don’t want to find yourself suddenly without late at night or on a weekend when all the stores are closed and your local mini-mart does not stock them and 16 oz. can of sammin is just not an adequate substitute in most instances so being prepared in advance is usually a good thing in this third world banana republic what our greasy butt empty suit prezident has created out of America, but that’s just my opinion and others may think differently and they are entitled to their opinions for whatever they are worth.

  103. JD.. I second SPQR on the 1911s. I have 4, 3 full size and one Commander. The Commander (Colt 9mm) is a bit finicky on ammo, hardball is dependable iffy w/ HP. Full size are 2 Colts and a Springfield, they happily eat whats feed to them. Don’t discount a large dbl action S&W or Ruger Redhawk though

  106. When I was a teenager I once helped out at a church rummage sale. The ladies in charge asked me to go through the clothes racks, straighten out all the hangers, try to keep the clothes arranged by size, and make sure none of the mens’ clothes had sneaked over into the womens’ section. “Sure”, I said, “I can do that.”

    A short while later I was working in, and arranging the mens’ outerwear rack. As a rather small person I thought one of the trench coats seemed awfully heavy and when I pulled it all the way out I noticed one of the pockets was bulging. That was cuz there was a pistol in there. And it was clearly a real one. I took it over to the minister who turned green and took it from me. I can only assume that someone’s missus donated the back-of-the-closet-no-longer-worn old coat that happened to be the hiding place for the mister’s handgun. Oops.

    I never did find out if there was a resolution or if there was even an attempt to track down the owner. I do know that there was no lost and found announcement about said gun in the next Sunday’s bulletin–because I looked.

    Yep, because I have a theory that characteristics similar to the ones described below can be extended to people’s ideological biases and how those correlate to other aspects of a person. IOW, leftist traits are innate too (and I’ll call them an innate defect), and a high percentage of homosexuals — far more than 30% — are of the left. I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

    BUT
    The point is that public policy is being driven by emotion with the logical analysis of 8-10 year olds. There is good reason why the world is not run by 8-10 year olds.

    Apparently some of the delusional crowd are saying that Sandy Hook didn’t even happen, that it was all a hoax to give the govt a reason to do a gun grab…

    Glenn Beck has been persistent in making a rational plea. If they come for our guns, let’s all do the MLK Jr. thing and say, “No, take me to jail”, in confidence that the nation is not yet so far gone that when forced to lock up millions of otherwise law abiding citizens for (once legal) firearms possession, the nation will come to its senses (enough, any way).

    I’ve read where in the past the NRA was actually active in helping both black and white southerners learn to handle firearms to defend against the KKK. Somehow I doubt the NRA is getting much credit for that.

    I’d really like to see researchers study that. I notice they correlate so many other idiosyncrasies of humans with their sexuality, such as left- or right-handedness, the swirl of one’s hair, the size of sections of the human brain, height, etc. I’m not sure if any of those characteristics are as overwhelmingly associated with such a large portion of the GLBT populace as gut biases of liberalism or leftism. And, yes, there are some conservative homosexuals, but based on surveys, perhaps they number around only 10 to 15 percent. And who knows how many of those are not too ideologically different from a so-called “conservative” like Andrew Sullivan.

    And, of course, his occupation as Illinois senator was the reason that he and his wife sent their two daughters to special schools in Chicago.     Mark, “we win” by simply sticking with a statement of clear fact and reason. If people wish to listen to manipulation and distortion instead of truth I can’t help that, but at the end of the day I can know that I was intellectually honest and spoke the truth. Whatever the Obama’s did in Chicago and why is not the current point (though it is a valid point in and of itself). And whether or not the children of this or any president is at greater risk of kidnapping than the “typical” child shouldn’t be much of an argument either. But while we may give this part of the argument up to Ygelsias and others, we do not give up the argument that, “No, his children are not ‘more important’ than ours”.

    Clarity simply illuminates the irrationality of their positions. They would like to claim to be for equality, but in reality they like their oligarchy, just as long as it is their oligarchy.

  115. The more I’ve met gay folks the more I’ve realized Elissa is exactly right. The perception out there is that conservatives loathe homosexuals. That’s what the media tells you.

    Pat Robertson and Michael Savage are held up to the low infos as the definition of the right. Do gays hear that Andrew Breitbart was a champion for their inclusion? Nope.

    Do the low infos learn that the left uses gayness as a derogatory expression all the time? Nope.

    That’s why the rare breaks in the filter, for example Paul Ryan’s VP debate, are precious to the cause, and also why the left tries to plug those breaks (for example with a biased moderator).

    I’ve had long conversations with gays about politics, and I find that many of them are fiscally conservative, but cannot support a party they believe hates them.

    We should think back to what Mitch Daniels said about putting social issues aside until the existential issues (the financial issues) are settled.

    It’s not that I dislike social conservatives. I am very socially conservative personally, but I also believe that a national party’s platform should put that kind of issue aside because of federalism.

    Anyway, I think Elissa’s on the right track.

    Dustin – I have had many long conversations as well and have not found a monolithic block on the hot button issues the left and media (BIRM) pushes. Most I have had rational discussions with don’t give a crap about marriage or gays in the military. Their issues are more over legal rights such as hospital visitation rights, inheritance, insurance benefits and the like. They view the public issues as stirred up by professional agitators not necessarily having the best interests of the gay community first.

    You really have to get to one of the reader’s reviews to understand why:

    There is much being said about gun ownership and the Second Amendment. Robert Williams book clearly illustrates why even in out “civilized” age that the protection of you and your family depends upon you.

    Williams found out about this the hard way when the police refused to assist him against a racist onslaught, but also when the NAACP turned on him too and revoked his NAACP charter for using a gun to save himself from being lynched!

    Who would have thought that it would be the the NRA that would come to the aid of Williams and his beleaguered people?

    Not exactly the image that the media would like us to have of the NRA, or the NAACP for that matter.

    Please do not let the injustice that this man and his family suffered or the painful lessons learned here go to waste!

    Read this book and take it’s lessons to heart

    Danny Glover and other idiots/liars would have you believe the NRA is like the Klan. Actually, the NAACP was aiding and abetting the klan while the NRA was helping to fight it.

    I’ve used the phrase “oldie but goodie” to refer to magazine articles a few months or a couple of years old. Well, here’s a real oldie but goodie:

    Report of the Joint Committee on Reconstruction, June 20 1866

    The former Confederate states were trying to get Senators and Representatives readmitted to Congress. The report took up the question of whether they were ready to be readmitted or not.

    From a typical post-bellum, Reconstruction state constitution (pages 539-541 of the report):

    CONSTITUTION OF THE STATE OF ARKANSAS

    We, the people of the state of Arkansas, having the right to establish for ourselves the right to establish a constitution in confirmith with the Constitution of the United States of America, recognizing the consequences of the existing rebellion….

    Article II

    Sec. 21: That the free white men of this State shall have the right to keep and bear arms for their common defense.

    One of the reasons why the 39th Congress was not only convinced that it was absurd to admit the southern states but also that the 14th Amendment was necessary were the systematic attempts, whether by law or force, by the former Confederacy to denied freed slaves their 2nd Amendment rights.

    1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

    The 2nd Amendment, and later the NRA, were securing the rights of blacks from Reconstruction through the Civil Rights era (MLK applied for a concealed carry permit and by some reports his house was an arsenal). As the Report of the Joint Committee observed it was only by exercising their right to keep and bear arms could freedmen exercise any of their other rights.

    For Danny Glover and his ilk to claim the 2nd Amendment and the NRA to be racist is either the height of ignorance or the depth of mendacity.

    Does that mean happyfeet is a liberal? He has to be, because to be resentful about social-cultural conservatism in the context of today — and not in the context of, say, 60 years ago (when Hollywood, no less, ostracized a famous actress for having a child out of wedlock, or NBC thought it was controversial when their late-night talk-show host said “water closet” on the air) — indicates one has to have fairly leftwing gut reactions in certain major ways. Even more so when such a person likes using the word “gay” in a non-positive manner.

    In all honesty I have a pretty limited amount of exposure to out-of-closet gays to chat with. You’re absolutely right that they seemed more concerned with tangible legal effects like those you mentioned. A couple (which is half of my sample) were also hopeful for gay marriage if Obama were reelected.

    My thought wasn’t too far from what you’ve said. I think people should think about our true best interests. By listening to serial agitators in the media and the academy, we have been divided up into little interests groups to demand various and endless social justice from new government initiatives. Everyone’s in a group. Seniors, gays, minorities, women, veterans, victims, allies, students, disabled (which almost seems like everyone who wants to be now), etc.

    If we define ourselves by our group, we miss the forest for the forest. We don’t realize that we’re all in a sinking ship.

    What’s in the best interest of gays? A balanced budget, low taxes, and federalism so the states can have different social arrangements without needless national tension. Funnily enough, that’s also in the best interest of everyone else.

    You make a very interesting point that all the tangible things a gay marriage advocate offers could be relatively easily without redefining marriage. Of course, the problem with that approach is that the democratic party’s end goal is not gay marriage, but the political power it gains from those voting for them in long term hope of getting it. In a sad way, the democratic party needs to keep its devotees in need as long as it can.

    The perverse effects of this can be seen wherever democrats have total power. You cannot find a worse result for the ultra stratified victim class than Detroit or DC or Chicago.

    Anyway, everything gets twisted around and around.
