Photoshop Contest: Photoshop Obama Firing Shotgun

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 11:06 pm

The White House warns you not to Photoshop this photo:

Here is the dire pronouncement:

“This official White House photograph is being made available only for publication by news organizations and/or for personal use printing by the subject(s) of the photograph. The photograph may not be manipulated in any way and may not be used in commercial or political materials, advertisements, emails, products, promotions that in any way suggests approval or endorsement of the President, the First Family, or the White House.”

Oh yeah?

What if our use suggests disapproval of the President?

The way I look at it, you have a patriotic duty to Photoshop this image — and I have a patriotic duty to publish your Photoshop.

Send your Photoshops to patterico@gmail.com.

Here are some early efforts. Mark Dice:

Whoa. Maybe he Photoshopped it himself!!!

Your contributions are welcome.

  3. the picture itself is a joke: he’s holding the gun wrong, has it mounted on his shoulder wrong, has his head in the wrong place if he actually wants to hit a clay now and then, and is standing wrong.

it is painfully obvious that Skeets doesn’t have the vaguest idea of what he is doing, and that’s before i ask why is there powder smoke coming out of only one side of the barrel, when porting is symmetrical and what kind of ammo are they shooting that makes that much smoke.

they didn’t even care enough to make the picture look good: do they not care or is someone letting him look bad on purpose?

  4. As a work of the United States Federal Government, the photo is in the public domain and everybody has the right to reproduce it and manipulated it as they please. That pompous pronouncement is of no legal effect whatsoever.

  9. Can anyone tell me, anyone at all, why anyone needs to shoot skeet?

    *waits five seconds*

No one can tell me why we need to shoot skeet.

    Pious Agnostic (20c167)

  10. Pious – well done.

If he is shooting, that seems to be trap, not skeet.

    Is that Biden’s Beretta?

    JD (8fc815)

  11. Apparently releasing a picture of him firing a shotgun in isolation, Plouffe called it a rifle lol, is supposed to be skeeter birther proof that Obama goes skeet shooting all the time

    JD (8fc815)

  12. Looks like he isn’t doing anything with that gun but blowing smoke.

    Comment by Milhouse (15b6fd) — 2/2/2013 @ 11:43 pm

In the running for most used phrase: “Can’t make this stuff up”.

Such a comment should be proof that the President has little functional understanding of the Constitution, no matter what he supposedly taught at a law school.
Will the members of the WH legal and press teams who made this please stand up and take credit, where credit is due?
    No, I wouldn’t either.

  16. why is there powder smoke coming out of only one side of the barrel,

For those of us who go snipe hunting but not skeet shooting, is there any reason this would be seen? Do those who know agree with red that the picture is bogus?

    MD in Philly (3d3f72)

  17. Isn’t that asphault in the background? Does anybody else think it’s a little unusual for Mr. President to be shooting in a parking lot?

    Whitey Nisson (7bb1d5)

  18. Or this ….

    http://youtu.be/HW3dfUg5FZY

    JD (8fc815)

  19. The only place I’ve ever been where there was trap (yes, not the same) shooting there was a driveway and small parking lot in the vicinity that would have shown up in the background, depending on the angle.
Of course, that is from my very limited experience.

    MD in Philly (3d3f72)

  20. I have no doubt that he really fired the gun. Jet porting seems silly unless you are using really heavy loads, which I cannot think of a good reason to do while skeet or trap shooting.

    JD (8fc815)

  21. Yeah, the picture is bogus. There’s no indication of recoil. Obama is standing straight up instead of leaning into the shot with most of his weight on the forward foot in anticipation of absorbing strong recoil. Standing straight up is how a skinny lightweight guy gets knocked on his can, at least in the funny papers.

If Obama had really pulled the trigger you would see a violent shock-wave moving through the exposed flesh of his face and arms, his shirt sleeves wouldn’t be hanging straight down, the muzzle would be pitched up somewhat and although the porting would tend to mitigate it to a degree, it would not eliminate the strong tendency to pitch up.

PS: JD, the shotgun he’s holding isn’t a trap gun, they’re longer and have straighter stocks with elevated cheek rests. I’ll explain why they’re made that way if necessary.

  22. I wonder if Moochelle likes her skeet, fried or baked?

    Is Snipe hunting next?

    Kevin P. (1df29c)

  23. Thx. Ropelight. I know it isn’t a trap gun. It just seems like a low aim for skeet.

    JD (b63a52)

  24. If this photo is bogus, one wonders why it would need to be fabricated? If they needed a shot of Obama to fob-off to the press, all they’d need to do is get one of their numerous Obama look-alikes and stand-ins, put him on a private plane, fly him somewhere that the trees are green, dress him in shirt-sleeves and mom jeans, hand him a shotgun, take a few pictures, and dispose of the body.

Easy peasy. Why invent an elaborate Photoshop conspiracy? You Skeet-Truthers are really wing-nuts!

    Pious Agnostic (20c167)

  25. For the sake of accuracy, below is is what the blurb accompanying the photo to the media said:

==”In this photo released by the White House, President Barack Obama shoots clay targets on the range at Camp David, Md., Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012.”==

In a recent interview with The New Republic magazine, Obama said yes when asked if he has ever fired a gun. He said “we do skeet shooting all the time,” except for his daughters, at Camp David.

So, I bet that what he referred to and probably also thinks is “skeet shooting”, (and assuming the released pic is even real) is really only him just aiming and banging away at a stationary clay target straight ahead of him, not in the air.

All the clever photoshops are fun and very well deserved after that warning. Keep shopping till you drop.

  26. Shooting up employment.
    Shooting up the Constitution.
    Shooting up our health care.
Shooting up our right to free speech, and bear arms.
    Shooting up our election process.
Shooting up our legal immigrant procedures.
    Shooting up any opponent.
    Shooting up America.

Take his new “squirrel” tactic and tie it to his policies and destruction of America.

Notice this came out as the unemployment rose, and while even more left the work force? What is the real unemployment number? 25-30% now?

Never take your focus or eye off the facts and the real issues. Use his clownish and brownshirt tactics as an opportunity to destroy them.

    freer speech (3c71eb)

  27. JD, the low aim (point) isn’t unusual, clay targets from the low house emerge only 3 feet from the ground and rise at a fairly shallow angle to about 15 feet before they descend and move out of range.

    ropelight (50554b)

  28. There’s also a couple of problems with the smoke from the ports. First, if real, it would be seen as separate well defined individual streams as it emerges from the ports instead of as a fuzzy cloud.

Next, equal smoke emissions would also be coming from the ports on the left side of the upper barrel. And the smoke seen emerging from the right side would be lined up with the ports visible on the left side. If you look closely the smoke and the ports don’t line up.

The picture is a fraud as sure as grass is green and rivers flow to the sea.

    ropelight (50554b)

  29. ropelight,

Pitch-perfect. Your parody is spot-on. Well done, sir.

  30. I shoot clays from time to time (terribly) at Moore and Moore here in LA and the way it works is that there are about a dozen stations where clays are launched under varying configurations. A couple of those are shooting “rabbits” which are clays shot just above the ground necessitating shooting down.

The rule as I understand it is that it is a bad habit to shoot level because that is how hunters get shot. But shooting up (bird shot doesn’t travel far) or down (into the ground close by) is how you hunt and shooting clays is meant to hone your shooting skills for hunting.

  33. That pompous pronouncement is of no legal effect whatsoever.

I could have accepted the purpose of it if it had been written so that “manipulated in any way” had been omitted and the message was merely a disapproval of the image being used as an “approval or endorsement.” But as is typical of so much out of the fatuous, flaky White House we’re now stuck with, it goes beyond that and is another example of the power-hungry, arrogant, and extremely disingenuous nature of Obama.

I guess we should be relieved the photo at least doesn’t show him throwing a baseball or bowing like a servant before a foreign dignitary.

  34. @25: so only liberal Republicans are welcome? You know, people who talk conservative but only vote for liberals? That’s why you Republicans keep losing membership and votes.

  37. I guess no one learned (or they forgot) the lesson of Rathergate and “Blue Helmut Guy”, if you want to fake something that is exposed to the scrutiny of the internet, you better do it well if you don’t want to get caught.

But then again, if it gets ignored when you are caught why bother with hard work?

    MD in Philly (3d3f72)

  38. Blue Helmut Guy”, er, make that “Green”.

  49. From Bighairy news, the young lady has the most perfect sneer I have ever seen.

    Bar Sinister (664312)

  50. There’s another problem with the phony photo. There appears to be a choke tube extending from the muzzle of the top barrel. In actual use, this threaded tube would be screwed in flush to the muzzle.

However, in photo ads and on displays at gun shops the choke tubes are often left sticking out a bit to remind potential buyers of the valuable feature of changeable chokes included on the high end Citori 725 (close to $3,000 retail).

Apparently, whoever set up the phony photo didn’t know enough to screw the choke tube all the way into the barrel. Why the lower barrel doesn’t show an extended choke tube is an open question.

The Citori comes with a barrel selection switch built into the safety which allows the shooter to choose which barrel fires first. However, experienced skeet shooters almost always set up their guns with the most open choke on the lower barrel (the one with the most porting) and set it to fire first. Then the top barrel will have a tighter choke installed and considerably less porting to allow for second shots at longer ranges. The barrel selector switch comes in handy not on the skeet range but in the field where game might flush just out of reach of the openly choked lower barrel.

Obama’s phony photo is wrong on so many levels because the manipulation had to be done in secret and his witting accomplices are as ignorant of guns as he is.
