Chick-Fil-A Kiss-In: Smaller Crowds, Bigger Media Coverage?

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 11:30 am

As compared to the day of support social conservatives held for the company?

So concludes the Instapundit, who is rarely wrong about such things.

Meanwhile bully Adam Smith went to try to find the girl from the Chick-Fil-A drive-in window, who (understandably) refused to talk to him. Was he trying to get her to participate in the kiss-in? Unimpeachable sources tell Harry Reid he was…

  1. Reid also says sources tell him Chick-Fil-A did not pay taxes in the free water Smith obtained.

  2. I had lunch at Chik Fil A today. Their side salads are legit, btw. I usually do not like fast food side salads.

I saw zero protesters, but the restaurant was packed with polite and happy customers. The lot had twin lines of cars nearly circling the building.

a much better job than I am used to from fast food. I think a lot of the increased business Chik Fil A is enjoying is simply because of their merit being exposed to a larger group of people. They blow other fast food joints out of the water.

I have no problem with the kiss in, though I haven’t seen it. It’s tacky, but it’s peaceful political expression. I think the ‘free water’ trolling is basically stealing.

  4. I posted this link at the Why Adam Smith was Being a Bully thread, and it’s funny how the LAT chose not to publish any of the same photos of the Hollywood Kiss In because it makes me wonder if they are attempting to present only one particular view of the SSM view represented by whom they chose to quote – not photograph? I’m seeing a bit of a contradiction (Pre-emptive strike: Rev. Sarah Halverson nor the Christ mockers in linked photos represent everyone, but that is whom/what the LAT chose as representative)…

Among those who came out to support gay marriage at Costa Mesa’s Chick-Fil-A on Friday afternoon was the Rev. Sarah Halverson of Fairview Community Church.

“I felt like it was an important opportunity to stand on behalf of love and inclusion and gay couples,” she said. “Love is love, and God has given us love to be shared.”

She said that although some Christians don’t believe in gay marriage, her understanding of Christianity is that God supports those who find love.

“There are Christians like us at Fairview that think that God gave every human being divine love,” she said.

  6. Mr. Smith is using the event in order to promote himself. He has now posted another video in which he apparently (I haven’t watched it) apologizes to the CFA employee but then goes on to rationalize his actions as “doing the right thing” despite the damage he has done to himself. In other words, still isn’t taking responsibility for being a douchebag.

  7. No homosexual parades going on at my local Chick-fil-A at lunch today. Just a wonderfully diverse crowd of people from all walks of life chowing down on some really good chicken.

Still, I wish they still served the lemon pie…

  10. The kicker was Rahm Emanuel and two other Democrat mayors of big cities not only blasting Chick-fil-A but threatening to inpact its business.

I think this pissed off as many people as the more narrow issue of gay marriage.

  11. Bigger media coverage? Of course…they are still trying to control the narrative.

    They are losing…

  12. In the Vid he (Adam Smith) claims he is taking money away from the hate filled CFA because he gets his free water, I understand that free water is a law in AZ. So AZ has a free water law and from a place that isn’t actually basking in it by any stretch of the imagination (Desert)? Sounds about right for the government.

So a CFO sits in perhaps an hour long line in his luxury car just to rob CFA of maybe $0.05? I wonder how much gas, time and energy this CFO wasted? I would have fired him just based upon his poor math skills.

And in the Vid when he proclaims he is not gay, “not a gay bone in his body”, doesn’t that just say it all. Apparently he personally sees being “gay” as that of a lesser than. Other wise why make that comment? So where is the tolerance when everyone is screaming about their intolerance?

    MSL (f060a0)

  13. Haven’t hit a Chick Fil A yet–the closest one is maybe 10 miles away. But it’s definitely on my gotta getrountuit list.

I think the George C. Scott/George Patton rant was that all Americans, all real Americans love a winner–and hate a loser or coward. He went on in that vein for quite a while.

But what Patton didn’t say is that Americans hate a bully. Now bullying goes on all the time–this morning’s NPR had some sort of public service advertisenent on it aboit school teachers and bus drivers banding together to stop bullying in schools.

Well it doesn’t stop, and is not likely to stop no matter how many good willed nanny minded second grade teachers work to prevent it. But you can hold it down. Second graders are by nature little savages–but most of them grow out of it.

But Rahm Emanuel and Mayor Menino and whoever that schmuck in San Francisco is didn’t grow out of it.

And the Chick Fil A eat ins were a big shame on you to that crew of arrested development second grade (and I might add second rate) brats. Shame on them.

The left has corrupted just about every slice of society, from the media, to academia, to retailing (eg, an article in today’s LA Times noted how a majority of businesses are starting to actively cater to GLBT customers), to government, to the YMCA/YWCA, to religion—referring to mainly Christianity, and not Islamism.

I recall speaking to a minister of a Presbyterian church a few years ago and saying warily about how socio-cultural traditions were being upended in today’s era. He said that was a good thing because people’s comfort zone needed to be shaken up. When such churches become far too similar to the local office of the ACLU or ACORN, it’s less surprising that their attendance and support have been declining or that parishioners are switching over to more strict denominations of Christianity.

But in general, I’m skeptical of any person who is well past his or her grade-school/college years, well past his 30s or 40s, but who still clings to left-leaning doctrine. To me that’s a case of arrested development, of innate immaturity in a part of such people’s brain.

  20. I usually don’t watch the news, but watching the Olympics last night, before I could change the channel the “Top Story” was the kiss-in.

They sent a cameraman and reporter to a local CFA where … One lesbian showed up.

So the media outnumbered the “protesters”. She was interviewed, and said she thought there would have been more people…

  21. This has been the media’s M.O. for years. Just look at the annual March for Life, which regularly gets 100’s of thousands of people protesting EVERY. YEAR. And not once has the media given it more than a casual mention along with photos of the 3 or 4 counter protesters that usually show up several blocks away.

I think the sexual images are blurred but one can opt to see the proud gays in all their in-your-face glory. Haven’t looked lately but last time there were some really ugly lesbians NTTAWWT and one jolly old gay blade with peace signs adorning his nekkid bod and testicles grossly inflated with saline. That is, at least some people would have come on Wednesday to support Chick-Fil-A and make a statement against the bullying and hatred that’s been directed at it, and again on Friday to support same-sex marriage. But of course the existence of such people would make lefty reporters’ heads explode, so I don’t expect to see it reported.

Actually, no. The “Up Your Alley Fair” is on some side street alley or other as opposed to Folsom which is a pretty big street. The fair, though, also get a contingent of the SFPD to observe and protect.

    11B40 (97b0d8)

  39. are you referring to the Folsom Street Fair? The local cops have no problem with public sex in front of children.

It’s not really a public space; it’s closed off and you can’t get in without knowing what you’re likely to see. And what goes on there is a form of political expression, so there would first amendment complications for any police attempt to interfere. The only children there have been brought by their parents, and the police take the attitude that it’s up to the parents to decide what they’re comfortable with their children seeing.

    Milhouse (15b6fd)

  40. Btw. Which INTERNS did Ensign, Vitter and Sanford have sex with??

Speech doesn’t need to be oral. Sign language is speech too. As is hiring someone else to speak (aka political donations). Or making a film (Citizens United). Costume is definitely a form of speech, or rather “expressive conduct”, if it is intended to convey a message.

This weekend I took a road trip and found one on their web site in a mall food court that I was passing. There were no protesters. They were the busiest place in the food court. It was the best chicken I’ve had from a fast food joint with very good service.

There will be many that are coming out for this event to show all that despite everything that has been happening the name Persian Gulf will remain forever. Please come out and show your support and pass this to others as well.. I have heard some other cities will be doing this as well.

Ebi will be singing his “Khalije Hamishegieh Pars” song and others will be there as well to talk about this historic name, its history and its importance. This has been put together by “Amir” even though he doesnt like talking about and taking credit for it. He is the gentleman who puts up the beautiful Norooz signs and is a famous designer.

    Um, why is that corruption? GLBT customers have money;

But they’re still such a small percentage of the overall public that it ends up being a lame type of pandering, an unnecessary form of political correctness, or PC for PC’s sake. However, I will say that the nonsense of “let’s be compassionate and tolerant until we turn blue in the face” in that case is not as bad (or not truly deadly) — and therefore is less corrupt — than the US military, Nidal Hasan and the Fort Hood massacre.

I know one company currently in the forefront of PC lunacy and pro-LGBT activism (and cited in the LA Times article) is the retailer JC Penney. Their marketing people hired Ellen Degeneris not long ago to star in a TV ad campaign. I saw one of those ads and thought, sheesh, the folks managing that must be to promotion what Obama is to the presidency. It was a big-budget affair, yet so “creative” that a viewer couldn’t even tell what or who was being hyped.

Big money down the drain, a big splat. Not exactly surprising that their sales tactic apparently has been a flop and the retailer continues to flounder.

So Chastity Bono was a lesbian and had a juicy girlfriend with the same leanings. Chastity then become Chaz but continues his relationship with the cute lesbo. So how is said lesbo still a lesbo if shacking up with a shim? I mean apparently lesbians prefer vaginas, so pray tell what is the attraction now to a penis post-op? I’m not gay NTTAWWT but if I were made into a woman, I guess I’d be a dyke because someone else’s penis holds no interest to me. Straight or gay, people like Rosie O’Donnell and Roseanne Barr are not the least attractive but of course scintillating personality plays a big role too. Remember jet fuel does not melt steel. But they’re still such a small percentage of the overall public that it ends up being a lame type of pandering, an unnecessary form of political correctness, or PC for PC’s sake.

What difference does it make what percentage of the overall public GLBT customers are? They’re still a significant market sector that it makes sense to court. Jews are an even smaller market sector, and yet for well over a century there has been significant corporate marketing targeted specifically to that small sector, because it pays.

    Milhouse (15b6fd)

  65. ________________________________________________

They’re still a significant market sector that it makes sense to court.

Maybe for a small business located in a place like San Francisco or West Hollywood. But for a big, nation-wide company to dole out advertising dollars for “GLBT” seems like an extravagant, unnecessary use of resources. That’s even more the case when the rule-of-thumb is that any typical promotional campaign — regardless of target market — will generate around a 3% response rate. So getting 3% out of an already quite small slice of the general public would have to be prompted by an act that’s more symbolic and political than sensible and economic.

I’ll say that, naturally, it’s advisable for a large business to not alienate a good share of its potential customers, which is far different from pandering to a small cross-section of them.

legalinsurrection.com: The real problem for Carbonite and its shareholders is that in leaving behind 15 million Rush listeners, Carbonite has shot its business model in the foot.

[G]etting new consumer subscribers is difficult and expensive, and getting more so as new competitors — including possibly Google — enter the field. A key part of getting new subscribers, according to [Carbonite’s] Prospectus, was through radio personalities.

While Carbonite does not name which radio endorsers it relies on most, looking at the list of Carbonite’s “trusted spokespersons” it is obvious that Rush was Carbonite’s single most dominant radio presence by far.

When Carbonite in its public filings warned of the risk of loss of “one or more of these endorsement arrangements,” what it really must have meant was the risk of loss of Rush’s endorsement.

…[P]ublic investors will have to ask, did our CEO put his own political leanings ahead of the interest of the shareholders? And if so, was it worth shooting Carbonite’s business model in the foot?

    Mark (70c729)
