Comment Problems Persisting?
Many are e-mailing me to say that they are continuing to have problems seeing comments. We are well aware of the issue and tech guys are working on it today. Please leave a comment and let us know if you are still having these problems. If so, tell us what operating system and browser you are using, and describe the problem as specifically as you can.
Meanwhile, deleting cookies seems to work for many people as a temporary solution. Obviously that is a pain in the rear, and not something you should have to do in the long term — but it will probably work as a temporary solution.
Windows Vista and Firefox 3.6.3
Posting a comment thereafter causes any full post screen with comments to be displayed with comments arbitrarily cut off at some previous date/time. While the front page will show all posts and the right hand column will note recent comments, clicking on any post to see recent comments will show the comments cut off to the old date/time.
Deletion of the patterico.com cookies restores full display of comments until the next time that a comment is posted, when the comments are again cut off to older date/time.
SPQR (26be8b) — 6/3/2010 @ 12:59 pmWindows XP, Internet explorer 8. but even my chrome was having headaches yesterday.
Like right here: https://patterico.com/2010/06/02/natalee-holloway-suspect-sought/
all i can see is the first comment.
Btw, if you guys don’t know, they caught van der sloot today. its on drudge. I tried to tell you in the comments, but i can’t be sure it was posted.
Aaron Worthing (e7d72e) — 6/3/2010 @ 1:03 pmand now i can’t even see any comments but the first one here. sigh.
Aaron Worthing (e7d72e) — 6/3/2010 @ 1:11 pmAaron, not that I ever do this, but you can send tips. I think the email for that is patterico.tips@gmail.com.
I don’t know if I am having commenting difficulty.
Dustin (b54cdc) — 6/3/2010 @ 1:20 pmnot a comment problem per se, but an interesting bug:
https://patterico.com/jury/
and
https://patterico.com/jury
go to different pages. only the first one is correct.
the banner on the page loaded by the first one takes you to the second one if you click on it.
aphrael (e0cdc9) — 6/3/2010 @ 1:32 pmI can’t see Aphrael’s most recent comment, or the one I just left.
I’m running Windows 7, Firefox 3.6.3. The problem resolves with IE, which doesn’t store cookies under my setup. Very similar to the comment problems I had with this blog a while back.
Dustin (b54cdc) — 6/3/2010 @ 1:40 pmLast night, I was having the same exact problem SPQR described in comment 1. I use XP and Firefox 3.0.1 Today I haven’t seen anything calling for one of my witty Oscar Wilde level responses 🙂
kishnevi (2c3adb) — 6/3/2010 @ 1:41 pmso this comment will be a test.
But now everything is working normally. The comment I posted and the comment Dustin posted while I was posting my comment both appeared.
kishnevi (2c3adb) — 6/3/2010 @ 1:43 pmBut now the second comment (which should be 8, if no one crossposted) I posted to report success doesn’t show up: after I hit submit the page reloaded showing my first comment (number 7) as the most recent comment, and nothing following that.
Mr. Head, meet Mr. Desk. Mr. Desk, meet Mr. Head.
kishnevi (2c3adb) — 6/3/2010 @ 1:46 pmI have the same issues with comments as SPQR.
Windows XP Firefox 3.6.3
I won’t mess with my cookies, so I can’t tell you if that temp fix works for me.
Ed from SFV (f0e1cb) — 6/3/2010 @ 1:46 pmCookies flushed, page loads correctly.
Patterico, maybe you should call in James Cameron for a quick consultation?
kishnevi (2c3adb) — 6/3/2010 @ 1:48 pmFF 3.5.9, XPSP2, same behavior as SPQR. Goes away if I kill cookies.
aphrael (e0cdc9) — 6/3/2010 @ 1:55 pmAnd yes, apparently I’m a slow adopter of new technology. Old OS, old browser.
aphrael (e0cdc9) — 6/3/2010 @ 1:56 pmI’m having the problem in Windows XP/IE, and Mac Leopard/Safari.
shipwreckedcrew (fe3b5b) — 6/3/2010 @ 1:58 pmTry now please.
enoch_root (9548cd) — 6/3/2010 @ 2:01 pmRather than kill cookies on a browser you have working the way you want, just set up a different browser. Have it refuse to inform redirects, never store cookies, etc etc. It’s handy, not just for troubleshooting, but for following questionable links, etc.
But it’s never a bad idea to constantly delete cookies. It’s amazing how much info those buggers have on you. Half the websites you visit know what you read, where you bank, where you live, and what movie listings you were interested in.
Dustin (b54cdc) — 6/3/2010 @ 2:10 pmFYI – hiding recent comments for a moment.
enoch_root (9548cd) — 6/3/2010 @ 2:10 pmenoch root,
I’m still having identical behavior since your ‘try now’ comment, which I can only see in IE sans cookies.
Dustin (b54cdc) — 6/3/2010 @ 2:12 pmkishnevi:
Awesome!
DRJ (d43dcd) — 6/3/2010 @ 2:16 pmkilling the patrick.bloggles.info cookies works. getting closer. uggh.

enoch_root (9548cd) — 6/3/2010 @ 3:07 pmYes, lots of comments problems and glad it’s being worked on; I know it’s no one’s fault but it’s getting pretty annoying.
Using Firefox 3.0.19; having problems very similar to SPQR’s.

enoch_root (9548cd) — 6/3/2010 @ 3:37 pmOn other threads, after leaving a comment, that comment and any submitted after it by others do not display. I’m running Firefox (latest version) and Windows XP SP3.
navyvet (206534) — 6/3/2010 @ 3:42 pmAha! It just happened again. After submitting #37, I navigated to another web site, then returned to Patterico, clicked on comments for this thread, and now only see 36 comments. My #37 does not appear.

enoch_root (9548cd) — 6/3/2010 @ 3:46 pmAs soon as I submitted what I assume to be #38 (because I can’t see it), my #37 does display on the page after click the Submit button. But nothing after #37 shows. Very perplexing.
navyvet (206534) — 6/3/2010 @ 3:46 pmEverything ok on my end, I am running IE 8.0.6. Had problems several days ago seeing all of the comments but on any of the threads I just clicked on –all ok.
BT (74cbec) — 6/3/2010 @ 3:47 pmyes – appears primarily with FF
enoch_root (9548cd) — 6/3/2010 @ 3:50 pmsame setup and problem as post #1 by SPQR…. we’ll see if it’s still going on with this post.
redc1c4 (fb8750) — 6/3/2010 @ 3:58 pmi also get the white screen of death when i post, rather than going onto the updated page.
redc1c4 (fb8750) — 6/3/2010 @ 3:58 pmI use Firefox and I can see the preview and all the comments, although the comments on the right sidebar are missing.
DRJ (d43dcd) — 6/3/2010 @ 3:59 pmOf course, I couldn’t see anything past #18 as soon as I left my last comment.
DRJ (d43dcd) — 6/3/2010 @ 4:00 pmi can’t see the DRJ post the front page tells me is here. off to delete cookies again.
redc1c4 (fb8750) — 6/3/2010 @ 4:02 pmI can see everything after closing my browser. And like red, I also get the white screen after posting a comment or a post, but it resolves when I refresh the page.
DRJ (d43dcd) — 6/3/2010 @ 4:02 pmThe link to comments on the sidebar is gone at The Jury. Sometimes I wonder if the two websites are out-of-sync or working at cross purposes.
DRJ (d43dcd) — 6/3/2010 @ 4:06 pmOpera, the most recent release 10.53, is causing problems with page loading, random shutdowns, comments, hangs and other random occurrences on both vista ultimate and win XP pro, just as a heads up to anyone running it.

enoch_root (174a66) — 6/3/2010 @ 6:03 pmWindows XP IE8. Still the same problems as others have detailed which have been going on for a week. After posting a comment at any thread there are no further comments visible within any of the threads, although it is clear by the total number shown that there are additional wonderful, meaty comments from others being added all the time. Deleting cookies works, but is not feasible over an evening of browsing. This *is* starting to feel kind of intractable like the oil leak. But thanks for working on it.
Hey, didn’t Al Gore invent the internet? I’ll bet he has some extra time on his hands these days (not having to pick up Tipper’s cleaning and all that sort of thing). Maybe he can give you some professional tips on fixing this problem.
elissa (bd8d4e) — 6/3/2010 @ 6:15 pmSame problem here as elissa @54 – but I’m using Firefox instead of IE8.
Also unable to see my comment below the Submit Comment button even though I hit a return (which always
Dana (1e5ad4) — 6/3/2010 @ 7:26 pmmakesmade it show up before submission). But hey, the Strike function works.Google Chrome
Firefox
IE-8 on XP
All have the same issue.
After I post a comment, all subsequent comments cannot be seen.
Plus it seems my comments have become infused with fantasy and delusion; while the threads surrounding intentionalism and textualism seem to have lowered rather than raised my IQ.
Steve G (7d4c78) — 6/3/2010 @ 7:39 pmI want my money back.
Plus it seems my comments have become infused with fantasy and delusion
You too? I get a horrible feeling of deja vu in the responses to my comments, lately. And the responses are always something I had already read by Gabriel Malor at Ace of Spades.
nk (db4a41) — 6/3/2010 @ 8:16 pmI have comment problems when using Explorer, and no problems when I use firefox.

My friends say my delusions are a feature. Part of my charm.
Same with my fantastical extrapolations…
After one of my comments, I think it was daleyrocks who mused that perhaps Carl Sagan was on the other line… which reminded me of a conversation I had with a very attractive woman:
We are talking about something out in the moonlight and she looks at me right in the eyes and I start to think this is gonna have a happy ending.. and looks deep into my eyes and she says “Wow, I’ll bet you used to smoke a lot of weed”
SteveG (7d4c78) — 6/3/2010 @ 9:46 pmEvidently I was not the Dos Equis “Most interesting man in the world” guy, but at least the misfiring synapses were attributed to drug use not idiocy
Oh yeah.
I switched browsers so I could see the comments.
SteveG (7d4c78) — 6/3/2010 @ 9:48 pmIt said there are 60 comments….but I only see 18: Did I leave one at #19? That usually closes off the comment thread for me.
AD - RtR/OS! (decd9b) — 6/3/2010 @ 10:03 pmNo! #19 was by DRJ. When #61 posted, all previous comments were revealed. If that’s they only way to see the comments???
AD - RtR/OS! (decd9b) — 6/3/2010 @ 10:06 pmI had to post a comment to see the comments!
ObamaCare’s got nothing on us.
And then I posted #62(?), and all I see are 1-61!
AD - RtR/OS! (decd9b) — 6/3/2010 @ 10:08 pmSomeone’s fudged some very poor code.
Move along, folks. Nothing to see here…
Frank Drebbin (8096f2) — 6/4/2010 @ 8:38 amFirefox 3.5.9 here. I don’t see any updates in the threads after I view the threads. Sometimes making a comment in the thread fixes the problem, sometimes not.
John Hitchcock (9e8ad9) — 6/4/2010 @ 9:00 amI got that big white screen this time, so everything came up, so to speak.
John Hitchcock (9e8ad9) — 6/4/2010 @ 9:01 amThe problem is a bad cookie that gets sent when you leave a comment. If you want to see subsequent comments, you must delete cookies from your browser. As long as you don’t leave a comment (you have blank ID fields above), you’ll be able to read everybody else’s comments.
nk who says delete cookies (db4a41) — 6/4/2010 @ 9:10 amGood grief, am I the only one running Opera on Linux?
Anyway, yeah, I am having commenting problems also. After posting a comment, only the page as it existed prior to my comment is served back to my browser, no matter whether cookies are erased or the browser cache dumped to force a reload. Server side issuing only the older page.
