Chocolate Bandit Uses Church to Pull Heist

Filed under: Crime — DRJ @ 8:38 pm

A New Orleans-area Sheriff’s department wants to question a man in connection with the theft of 200 cases of chocolate:

“Authorities say [Jason] Dumas ordered 200 cases of chocolate from the company under Celebration Church’s name on Oct. 27, 2009. The candy was delivered to the church in LaPlace where authorities say Dumas and another suspect were waiting to unload the order into two vehicles.

The church’s pastor, David Jochum, said that before the delivery, the candy distributor called the main office to confirm the shipment of the chocolate to one of the church’s deacons — a man named Jason Dumas.

The receptionist told them there was no one by that name at the church, but the company delivered the chocolate anyway, Jochum said Wednesday.

The church received an invoice for $9,020 from World’s Finest Chocolate in February. Jochum said when he received the bill, he immediately thought it was an error, because he knew the church did not order any chocolate, let alone 200 cases.

“We turned it over to our finance department and once they contacted the distributor, they gave us names of the people who ordered it,” said Jochum. “They were not names of anybody connected to our church.”

I’d check out area candy shops and anyone who handed out lots of chocolate last Halloween.

Condoms for Kids

Filed under: Education — DRJ @ 8:29 pm

[Guest post by DRJ]

It’s Condom-Bonanza in the Provincetown, Massachusetts, school district:

“Earlier this month, the school committee overseeing Provincetown’s schools passed a resolution that will provide all students from elementary to high school with free, unlimited condoms. All you gotta do is step up and request one.

Let’s say you’re the parent of a 6-year-old and you don’t like the idea.

Tough! says the district.

You don’t get a say. School officials don’t even have to tell you if your….

…child requests a condom. Further, if you object, they can run roughshod over you. They can distribute at will.

Sounds like a condom-bonanza!

Not quite, sneered the committee chairman.

“It’s about availability; we’re not handing ’em out like M&M’s,” Peter Grosso told the Boston Globe.

That’s true. You have to go talk to the school nurse and she can load the student up with a wallet-ful if necessary.

If the person requesting them is particularly young? Say, a kindergartner wanted a few dozen? These are professionals we’re talking about, so don’t worry.

The superintendent said that “if an especially young child requests a condom, the nurse will ask the student’s motive and act accordingly.”

Because it would be unthinkable to Just Say No.

Is Petraeus Doomed to Fail?

[Guest post by DRJ]

Senator Kit Bond thinks General Petraeus may be set up to fail [video at the link]:

“He is set up for failure if the President and the Vice President continue to talk about a hard, fast withdrawal date, an exit strategy in July. That has already unsettled and demoralized our allies and encouraged our enemies.”

Bond agreed that a “good start” would be putting a muzzle on Vice President Joe Biden and criticized Ambassador Karl Eikenberry for sending a “secret memo” to President Obama designed to undermine General McChrystal. Bond also called on Eikenberry to step aside in favor of former Ambassador Ryan Crocker.

Just Build Something

Residents and officials of several states say President Obama is the only person who can order the federal government to build barriers that will stop outside invaders from harming their states. Illegal immigrants threatening the Southern border? Not hardly. Asian carp are invading the Great Lakes but the federal government says it will take years to decide whether to build stronger barriers to keep the carp out. The concern is the carp will drive out other fish and ruin the area fishing and sport-fishing industries. Michigan’s Attorney General is even considering legal action.

Who knew that when Barack Obama said he would bring Hope and Change, he meant lawsuits with and boycotting our 57 states?

JFK and W used initials, in part to avoid controversial last names. Will it work for Rory who’s afraid he’ll be confused with his father, Harry Reid?

Democrats Kick the Medicare Can Down the Road While Decrying Can-Kicking

[Guest post by DRJ]

ObamaCare promised to expand health care without busting the budget. To do that, health care legislation omitted the so-called Doc Fix that prevents doctors from being hit with scheduled Medicare cuts. Just three months later, Doc Fix is back.

I guess this means the ObamaCare budget is officially busted.

Cheerleading for Cap and Trade

The Senate Democratic cheerleading squad is hard at work for the American people — including a meeting that was “almost like a little revival – a lot of clapping, a lot of yelling.”

I’m putting the “Government” label on this but this isn’t the way I think government should work. If we’re lucky, someday the Student Council kids will be in charge instead of the cheerleaders.

The U.S. Supreme Court today limited when prosecutors can use the so-called “honest services” law in criminal cases.

I blogged on the Skilling case here and here, and Patterico touched on it briefly here.

Blagojevich Bombshell?

[Guest post by DRJ]

Amid all the political news this week, perhaps the Obama Administration hopes Americans won’t notice this Obama tie-in from the Blagojevich criminal trial:

“A top aide to former Gov. Rod Blagojevich said he believed Barack Obama knew of Blagojevich’s plot to win himself a presidential Cabinet post in exchange for appointing Valerie Jarrett to the U.S. Senate.”

As a result of this testimony, the Blagojevich defense is once again asking the Judge to “to force the prosecution to turn over FBI reports of Obama’s interview with federal agents in December of 2008” because it has bearing on the trial testimony although the Judge turned down a prior defense request to subpoena President Obama, labeling it not material and essentially viewing it as a fishing expedition. This time it might not be so easy to discount.

At Hot Air, Allahpundit looks at whether this suggests illegal acts by the Obama Administration (probably not) and revisits one of several political implications:

Update: The other point to remember here, which is probably most damning to the White House, is that their own internal review in December 2008 concluded that Emanuel was the only insider who had direct contact with Team Blago. That appears to be technically true but effectively a lie given the allegations that The One himself was relaying messages to them via an intermediary. That’s “transparency” the Chicago way.”

This would have been shocking a year ago. Now it just seems par for the course.
