Mother from Hell Teaches Son to See Himself As Victim

Filed under: General,Race — Patterico @ 8:01 pm

Because the 100-0 basketball game wasn’t enough, here is more drama at a North Texas high school. The latest example is this story about a woman ready to litigate the issue of whether her son should be “drum squad leader”:

Wynthia Brewster claims her son should have been drum leader in North Garland High School’s marching band this school year.

But when the band director chose another student, Brewster refused to accept the results. At a football game and a marching band competition, she displayed a banner that read, “BAND DIRECTOR TODD TONEY CHEATED MY SON.”

Yes, of course she’s an attorney:

Brewster, an attorney, said she’d be willing to go as far as the Texas Supreme Court.

I bet they can’t wait.

Brewster says her son was rejected for the position because her son is black:

“I think Mr. Toney has issues because he cannot cope with having an African-American as squad leader, or doesn’t like Austin,” she said. “If you do not take a stand when someone is implementing racial hatred, and you do nothing, then you say it’s OK. And it’s not OK. I’m here trying to teach my children values.”

The band director says her son isn’t the best qualified:

Squad leaders this year are ethnically diverse, he wrote [in an e-mail defending his decision]. One is black.

Toney also wrote that while “Austin is a great kid and we love that he is in band,” he has had problems with tardiness and behavior. He also stressed that the squad leader tryouts focused on marching fundamentals, and Austin did not stand still during attention.

Does the story present any evidence that Ms. Brewster has worked with Austin on his punctuality, behavior, or ability to stand still? Uh, no. But Ms. Brewster has convinced her son that he is a victim of racism, a conclusion he initially resisted:

Austin said he supports his mother’s efforts, though he initially did not. The “race card” was a tough card to play, he said. But ultimately, he said, he could see no other reason that he didn’t get the coveted position.

How about his tardiness, behavior, and inability to stand still at attention?

“Sometimes moms can be overbearing and over-supportive,” Austin said. “But she explained the scenario to me. She didn’t want me to look the other way.”

Hallelujah. Another victim is born.

  1. Some suits are so silly the judge should find contempt and jail the plaintiff and attorney.

  2. I actually support Singaporean canings for crazy cases, like the million dollar dry cleaning D.C. damage case. That is tort reform every one can agree with.

  6. She should meet those PA parents who sued their public high school for violating their son’s free speech rights.

    For those of you (all of you, I’m sure) who don’t follow, a bit of history:

    PA kid develops a website explaining how principle is Hitler and has photo morphing principle into Hitler. PA kid further solicits donations to hire hit-man to kill math teacher. School expels PA student. Parents sue for 1st amendment violations. PA courts don’t immediately dismiss due to a possible case as presented by parents.

  7. As if everyone doesn’t already know that 99 44/100% of the racism in the U.S. comes from blacks she has to prove it.

  8. Reading this….

    I ride in a very large Carnival parade here in New Orleans, and last year we had a supposedly drunken rider get off the float near the Superdome, and in trying to relieve himself between the sections of the float, was run over by the float when it began moving (there are facilities on the float). His widow is suing for $14 Million, wrongful death.

    She’s the victim….of her husband’s stupidity….

  9. Interesting how there isn’t mention of a Mr. Brewster being involved in making these serious and potentially life changing accusations and decisions.

    The first few comments at the linked piece are rather interesting…

  10. Oh, you folks HAVE TO look at the blog entries on that link! Momma’s an attorney that has been publicly reprimanded for ethics violations! That just added a lot more juice to the story.

  11. [Paranoid] personality disorder is characterized by at least 3 of the following:

    (a) excessive sensitiveness to setbacks and rebuffs;
    (b) tendency to bear grudges persistently, i.e. refusal to forgive insults and injuries or slights;
    (c) suspiciousness and a pervasive tendency to distort experience by misconstruing the neutral or friendly actions of others as hostile or contemptuous;
    (d) a combative and tenacious sense of personal rights out of keeping with the actual situation;

    I’ve dealt with people like this: If they believe they’ve been unjustly dissed (read: dissed at all) they go all Ellen Ripley on you and won’t stop until forced to (or they lapse back into the depressive phase of their bi-polar disorder).

    No reasoning with them, ever. They’re too far gone.

  16. Victim or HHHHustler? Sounds like she’s teaching her boy some hustler101. Just believe you are always right, refuse to back down or ever admit you are wrong, pick the right buttons to push, keep talking, and make em’ give you what you want. Yuck.

  19. Don’t you know that concepts like tardiness, standing still and other behavioral tasks are just racist inventions by the MAN to keep minorities down and to erect a glass ceiling they can’t go through. For shame.
    Actually shame on the mother, didn’t she hear that we’re in a post racial period thanks to Mr. Obama?

  20. The woman must know Jeff Koopersmith who wrote this about Michelle Malkin:

    “”Malkin then name calls Michelle Obama, who is not running for anything as I recall.

    She says Mrs. Obama is “cunning” (read: sly, wily, crafty, sneaky, “shiftless negro”). “Cunning”? Hey, I thought that one was reserved for Asians during World War II. Get this: Malkin thinks that Michelle Obama is “cunning” because she “brags” (AKA: boaster, blowhard, crow, “uppity negro”) about buying her sundresses at a discount store. Not only that, but Mrs. Obama does this with “studied casualness” (read: “lazy negro”).””

    Classic projection of racism.
    The word “cunning” equals: “shiftless negro”!!! who’d have known?
    Then there is the conflation of “studied carelessness” with “lazy negro”.

    So, “tardiness” equals “lazy negro” and “inability to stand still at attention” becomes a charge of “shiftlessness”.

    I assume that leaders shouldn’t be tardy because… well if she can’t figure that one out I got nothing… and I assume that in any band competition that a leader who moves around when everyone is supposed to be at attention is going to cost his team… but that aside, this is clearly racism. Clearly.
