More on Obama’s Selflessness

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 8:40 am

Yesterday I pointed out that Obama accused John McCain and Sarah Palin of making a virtue out of selfishness — despite the fact that Obama and his running mate donated very little to charity, while McCain and his running mate were far more generous.

Another point about Obama’s Amazing Selflessness. Obama’s brother lives in Kenya on less than a dollar a month. Obama’s aunt lives in public housing.

Meanwhile, our selfless presidential candidate reported over $4 million in income in 2007.

Thanks to a Hot Air commenter.

  1. I published this for a minute or two as a quote from the Hot Air commenter, but the quote overstated Obama’s brother’s income. So I took the post down within a couple minutes of publication and rewrote it to make the point clearer and more accurate.

  2. Rumor has it that Obama’s aunt is an illegal alien.

He is not an “unlicensed” plumber however, so its not news worthy.

  3. Kenya’s cheap but you can’t live there (or anywhere) on less than a dollar a month.

You can live on less than that in cash income but that’s different and in a city you usually can’t even do that.

Unfortuantely The Telegraph’s web site seems to be timing out so I can’t check the original source but this has to be wrong.

  4. Patterico – Is the aunt in question Obama’s illegal alien aunt from Kenya who a judge told to leave the country four years ago? Gateway Pundit has the details.

Also, did Obama actually release his 2007 return or just summary information? I was under the impression he just released summary information.

In any event, running for President sure pays better than being a U.S. Senator.

  5. The Obamas donated $240,370 to charity last year, which is more than the McCains gave to charity despite the fact they earned more money than the Obamas.

Cindy McCain inherited $100,000,000 from her daddy’s gambling and liquor “enterprises,” yet her sisters got nothing from the estate or the McCains.

  6. The Obama’s also gave:
$26,270 to Trinity United Church of Christ (whose pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. has made headlines for controversial sermons).

I know, I’m a racist for bringing it up.

Imagine the news media reaction if McCain had given $26,000 dollars to the KKK, this is the black KKK so its OK.

  8. It is the paradox of the Democrat. I know several wealthy persons who profess to be Dem’s, and yet they are the cheapest, meanest, people I know. Even unto their own family, they will admit to: “sticking it to them”, arbitrarily and then justify this behavior upon their own imagined superior morality or judgment. As the old saying goes: “Scratch a socialist and they will bleed blue, just like an aristocrat”. Like “snuffles”.

That is some hard to beat logic you got going there.

  19. Of course, there is a fundamental point of political philosophy to adhere to here: Charity should emanate from the federal govt in the form of welfare, health care, and income tax rebates to people that pay no income tax.

I guess you could say that Obama’s recent increase in charitable giving constitutes a flip-flop.

  20. the definition of integrity is doing what is right even when no one is looking

The Obama’s sudden interest in giving to private charity after deciding to run for President doesn’t fall into the definition of integrity

But “progressives” like the Obamas and the Bidens just figure public blather about how they will enforce legislation to confiscate money from earners and give it to non-earners, constitutes superior moral worth. See, wanting to actually keep one’s own earnings is “selfish”, regardless of the oft-time proven facts that redstate Americans give more per capita than bluestaters.

Maybe you are realizing that being liberal isn’t such a bad thing. Now you want to say McCain spreads more wealth around than Obama. Aren’t you guys getting a little confused with this spinning? Just spare me the crap about other people’s “greed” or the inequality of the distribution of wealth. It ain’t too impressive coming from the likes of the ultra-rich messiah family, especially when they don’t seem to have much interest in helping out Obama’s poverty-stricken family members.

    frugal, tight-fisted person
The word you’re looking for is “penurious”.
    Obama is just cheap!

No, what we are arguing is what almost every study of the subject for the last twenty years has shown:
Those families that self-identify as “conservative” have a higher level of giving, as a percentage of AGI, than families that self-identify as “liberal”.
This works across all classifications of demographics, location, and income.

Plus, politicians know that their tax-returns are going to be exposed to the public, and sifted through with a fine-tooth comb, just for little things like this. For them to still not engage in charitable giving is an act of extreme hubris, telling the electorate to “get f…ed”!

No doubt there are hypocritical and greedy Republicans also, but think about the holier-than-thou lifestyles, self-righteous, self-aggrandizing attitudes of such a motley crew as the Breckgirl, Lurch sKerry, algore, airhead huffington, fatboy (and big nimby) teddy kennedy, lardass/scruffy Mikey Moore. I’m sure you have your own picks. Obama gives one speech via teleprompter at the demmy convention and it makes him abe lincoln, god and Martin Luther King, jr. all rolled into one?
As far as bobo’s pitiful squeaking, Obama doesn’t want his own money in the mix. Let those greedy capitalists pay out the dupa in taxes and also buy his literary masterpieces, eh? Let Obama provide lucrative earmarks for michelle’s “non-profit” hospital employer who then gives her a nice, fat $100+ K salary for sending indigent patients to competing hospitals to save her own ripoff hospital’s fat bottom line. What is it- something like a dozen vice presidents collecting over $300k each? No, an endorsement from Ken Duberstein, who was Reagan’s Chief of Staff for less than one year (1988-89), and only the last “lame duck” Chief of Staff after Reagan’s real Chiefs of Staff during his first seven years (Jim Baker, Donald Regan, and Howard Baker) is simply ancillary garbage. Duberstein’s wife is the producer of the Charlie Rose show! Do you think Kenny wants his wife to lose her job?

  64. You are the one trying to be deliberately obtuse by trying to make something out of nothing.
    – You’re right. It’s just a coincidence that McCain & Palin give more than Obama bin “charity begins at the Treasury” Biden.

You all know what Obama said and meant.
    – About what? “Spreading the wealth”? YES, we do know what he meant. It’s the same thing Karl ‘meant’.

You know he is not a socialist.
    – I KNOW that he is.

McCain has said so himself. So also Palin.
    – Not paying close attention, are we? Neither one of them said that.

All Obama is saying is that we should stop giving tax breaks to those who don’t need it so as to give a chance to people who need it.
    – 1) EVERYBODY needs a tax break. 2) We can afford to give EVERYBODY (everybody that ACTUALLY PAYS taxes, that is) a tax break by CUTTING spending at the same time; but, of course, cutting spending is a foreign concept to liberals.

Folks like freaking Joe the Plumber!
    – Joe’s question to Obama seems to have stumped you . . . as it did the candidate before you.

This is a position John McCain supported 8 years ago. That was before he became bed-fellow with George Bush.
    – 1) John McCain NEVER supported increasing anyone’s taxes. 2) John McCain NEVER supported giving tax rebates to people that had not paid any taxes in the first place. 3) “bedfellow” – I’m seriously beginning to think that an inability to form compound words is a sure sign of liberal tendencies.

  65. My wife and I made about $75,000 last year. We frequently take care of one of my nephews, because his parents are too crazy and irresponsible to properly raise the poor kid. When he stays at our house, we pay, not the government, and not the taxpayers, and that’s how it ought to be.

Compare and contrast with the scumbag Obama family, who earned $4.2 million last year, who leave their relatives living in poverty and let taxpayers like me (I paid about $7,500 just in federal income tax last year) pick up the tab for housing the messiah’s aunt. And, to add insult to injury she isn’t even an American, and apparently is an illegal alien to boot!

And, of course, this fabulous system was set up by liberal turds, just like the new messiah and his missus.

If anyone wonders why I hate Democrats with a passion…wonder no more.

Spread the wealth around, my ass.

Under federal election law, only U.S. citizens or green-card holders are legally permitted to give money to campaigns.”–Boston Herald

Ain’t that just too touching? The government takes my money (and your money too) at gunpoint, uses it to give a millionaire’s illegal alien aunt an apartment (because he won’t take care of his own), and then she somehow comes up with money to make apparently illegal donations to her millionaire nephew’s political campaign.

Get a clue, folks. She’s not donating her money, she’s donating YOUR money!

And, to top it off, the taxpayers also get to pay the government to deal with her asylum requests, and other matters pertaining to her being in the country illegaly.

    What a racket.

And, half the country actually believes the new messiah and takes his spread the wealth bullshit seriously?

Now, breath in and out…..(that’s it)…….Now say after me. “President Barack Obama.” “President Barack Obama..” “PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA!” “PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA!!”

  143. Truthandjustice : It is obivious that reading comprehension is not your forte.

There is no report by a legislative committee regarding “Troopergate.” The committee released an investigator’s report.

That report was not examined by the committee nor was there any attempt to verify either the facts claimed by the investigator to be true or the conclusions reached by the investigator.

The whole report boils down to no crime was committed and there is no real evidence of an ethics violation. The investigator merely “believes” that Sarah Palin might have felt undue satisfaction in the “firing.”

    Whether he’s president or not.

  148. Someone has just found and posted a copy of a very rare Weather Underground Newspaper called Osawatomie, which was published by the Ayers-Dohrn wing of the group.

Curiously, the newspaper reveals that the Weather Underground logo has remarkable similarities to the Obama logo. More important is the section entitled “Revolutionaries Must Be Organizers.”

  149. “What really is your point? How is this Aunt issue another reason to bash on Obama?”

Because he makes $4.2 million a year, and the rest of us have to pay to support his illegal alien aunt, while we make $75,000 a year (what I made last year) and also support our families on our own dime.

Because your new messiah is a fat hypocrite, and a parasite on society.

    How’s that for reasons?

    – Und you vill address him as Der Messiah! Und you vill salute him! Und you vill perform community service in exchange for your re-education education

  155. sniffy

is a 25 year old traffic ticket the same as a 3 year old felony?

The human condition is that we all sin, and sin is like a withdrawal on one’s moral bank account — assuming that one has opened one in the first place. You make amends, promise to do better, KEEP that promise and make deposits on the account.

The one thing that Jews and Christians have over amoral Leftists is they don’t believe humans are perfect nor perfectable. Religion is NOT there to wipe out human suffering but to help people cope with the suffering

Leftists never believe their own ideology is at fault for anything … they believe that humans are perfectable and society would be unicorns, kite flying and fluffy bunnies save for the nasty people who get in the way.

When religion has gone sour, it has produced great evil. There is nothing quite like religious evil (and the true meaning behind “thou shall not take the Lord’s name in vain) … it brings religion and God into disrepute.

But for sheer body count and rivers of blood, you can’t quite match the Left who has strived to replace God with The State.

Ethical monotheism with the tenet that all humans, imperfect as they are, are born equal in the sight of God, is the animus behind the American values that Obama and cult want to fundamentally change. They want equality of outcome ie egalitarianism. If someone suffers anywhere, even mere discomfort, it is always the fault of the non-leftist/non-egalitarian people. People who need to be silenced one way or another in a post-partisan Obama-unified, all belief in one ideology nation.

McCain’s sin against his wife is between him and her. He has more than made enough subsequent deposits in his moral bank account to put him in the black.

sniffy, like ephebohile Maher, refuses to even go into the bank. It makes their own sins easier for them to bear…just as Leftist mass murderers – Che, Stalin, Pol Pot, can wave away the blood.’

It isn’t like their victims are real authentic human beings.

Like dKos/Puffington/pandagon/firedoglake et al applaud and encourage the personal distruction of people who dare question The One.

  156. No, snuffy, not if I paid as high or a higher percentage of my income in taxes as Obama did….

If that’s true, and I’ll be it is, then he’s as much of a parasite as I am in your eyes….
