Another Major Holder Scandal — Just in Time for His Appearance Tomorrow!

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 11:10 pm

Just when you thought Eric Holder was really in trouble over Fast and Furious, you learn that he’s potentially in trouble over something else:

A U.S. Justice Department source has told The Daily Caller that at least two DOJ prosecutors accepted cash bribes from allegedly corrupt finance executives who were indicted under court seal within the past 13 months, but never arrested or prosecuted.

The sitting governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands, his attorney general and an unspecified number of Virgin Islands legislators also accepted bribes, the source said, adding that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is aware prosecutors and elected officials were bribed and otherwise compromised, but has not held anyone accountable.

The bribed officials, an attorney with knowledge of the investigation told TheDC, remain on the taxpayers’ payroll at the Justice Department without any accountability. The DOJ source said Holder does not want to admit public officials accepted bribes while under his leadership.

Remember that Holder is sitting on the hot seat tomorrow morning answering questions about U.S. gunrunning to Mexico. I don’t know whether he will have to answer questions about this newly emerging scandal tomorrow . . . but he will have to sometime.

If he doesn’t resign first.

  3. This is dynamite if accurate. Does anyone know anything about whether the Daily Caller fact-checked this, or about the author? His on-site bio reads:

Matthew Boyle is a reporter at The Daily Caller. He studied journalism at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida, where he worked as an editor at the school’s newspaper, The Gargoyle.

These aren’t exactly overwhelming credentials, but I’m not familiar with Mr. Boyle’s reputation or past work.

  4. “These aren’t exactly overwhelming credentials”

It’s a lot more impressive than guys who have spent decades working for propaganda outlets, like the NYT, the WaPo, CBS, MSNBC, etc., etc.

    At least, IMO.

  5. Yeah, I was going to mention this to you if you hadn’t seen it, which I was sure you had. I knew you’d bite on it.

I’m not a legal history buff, but worst attorney-general ever?

  6. “If he doesn’t resign first.”

I don’t know. I can see him staying the < 1 year Obama has in office. It's an expanding disgrace, but I won't put it past him nor Obama.

  7. This is on of the biggest scandals in U.S. history, up there with Executive Order 9066, the Tuskegee Syphillis “Experiment”, the Smith Act prosecutions, My Lai and various other atrocities carried out by (or taking place under the rule of, in the case of My Lai) the “liberal” Democrats.

Just by itself it should be enough to cause the impeachment and removal from office of Barack Obama (and all his henchmen).

Let’s be blunt: Our government got caught red-handed effectively supplying murderous drug cartels with thousands of weapons, hoping that the resulting carnage would give the federal government justification to strip Americans of their Constitutionally guaranteed right to keep and bear arms via various onerous gun control laws. I know that’s what this is all about. You know that’s what this is all about, and they damned well know that’s what this is all about.

“In April 2009 Barack Obama traveled to Mexico and blamed US gun sellers for “This war being waged with guns purchased not here but in the United States.” Just to be sure, a few months later the Obama Administration started running their own guns to Mexico, at least 2,000.”–Gateway Pundit

    Quite a coincidence, ain’t it? Only it ain’t a coincidence. And, like I said…everyone knows it ain’t.

But, of course all the lefty media and academic types will largely ignore Fast and Furious (because it’s the work of the liberal Democrats, and it didn’t take place under a Republican administration) and they’ll talk non-stop about non-important issues like Watergate, Teapot Dome, or the Whiskey Ring, while sneering at Republican corruption…just like they’ve been doing for generations.

  8. “Just by itself it should be enough to cause the impeachment and removal from office of Barack Obama (and all his henchmen).”

Well, I thought killing 100s of Mexicans with guns left to cross the border to Mexico against the objection of gun dealers and agents themselves should meet the standard for resignation, plus lying in congress about when the AJ knew about it. And not prosecuting the Black Panthers’ videotaped voter intimidation was corrupt.

    But what do I know?

Apparently the U.S. is officially a banana Republican, but produces oranges.

  10. Mr. Surls (#4 — 2/1/2012 @ 11:46 pm), the fact that “the NYT, the WaPo, CBS, MSNBC, etc.,” are propaganda outlets doesn’t mean that Mr. Boyle knows his trade. Yes, the mainstream media sucks. Logically, however, that doesn’t prove that everyone outside the mainstream media doesn’t suck. I don’t know if Mr. Boyle sucks — that’s why I asked; it was not a rhetorical question — but his listed credentials, objectively, are very thin. They would be thin whether his employer skews left, right, or eclectic, and whether it engages in propaganda or maintains the highest traditional standards of journalistic ethics.

In print, and to some extent historically in practice, there are very important ethical guidelines that professional journalists are supposed to follow when their reporting relies on confidential sources. Unless the confidential source on whom Mr. Boyle’s reporting is based is himself honest and knowledgeable, this story is two or three orders of magnitude less important and probably not worth our attention. So, with due respect, I think Mr. Boyle’s credentials are relevant, and with due respect, I didn’t find your opinion to be very enlightening on this occasion.

    Beldar (22c1e5)

  11. Beldar, in fairness, Mr. Boyle was very open about about admitting unverified info, that it was from a particular anonymous source, and etc. I didn’t feel I was being fed a snow job when reading it. Possibly the source is running one, but I didn’t get that impression of Boyle. I got the feeling he knows this is big and is being very careful, probably to protect his new reputation and be fair to readers.

  12. Lookee lookee, “Bribery!” that’s more important than some guns crossing the boarder. Throw enough crap in the air and nothing seems important.

    Gbear (ceec6d)

  13. In March 2003, a committee of the House of Commons summoned the executive in charge of Rupert Murdoch’s British newspapers to a hearing and put him on the spot about aggressive tabloid reporting tactics.

‘Is it time to clean up your act?’ demanded one member of Parliament. Les Hinton, the executive chairman of News International at the time, was indignant in his reply. ‘Clean up our act? Are you saying we’re dirty?’

With revelations that some within News International’s ranks were not only dirty but criminal, Mr. Hinton is coming under scrutiny for what he did and did not know when he ran the company from 1995 until 2007, the period when the most egregious known examples of voice mail hacking by News International employees took place …

  14. Read all 8 pages of Boyle’s account. He makes his points well within the conventional standards of objective journalism and his article deserves to evaluated exclusively on what he wrote.

If it’s all true and accurately reported nothing else matters, not his age, his educational background, his political affiliations, or his mother’s maiden name.

  15. Former CIA head Gen. Hayden on CNN:

“But any personal instinct toward some common “executive branch” empathy for Holder is muted not only by the dubious character of Fast and Furious, but by some of the attorney general’s other actions, as well. While out of office, for example, he famously called for a ‘reckoning’ for CIA officers and other officials who authorized and conducted operations that were edgy and risky and intended to deal with difficult circumstances.”

  16. but has not held anyone accountable

And how is this different from any other Dem… at least unless the “anyone” is a Republican, in which case they’re behind Gavrilo Princip.

It’s an expanding disgrace, but I won’t put it past him nor Obama.

This is The Great Big 0 we are talking about. Holder will be dragging him down into November. If I were Holder I’d be exceptionally cautious about being anywhere near mass transit systems.

  17. They would be thin whether his employer skews left, right, or eclectic, and whether it engages in propaganda or maintains the highest traditional standards of journalistic ethics.

That last part, no, because then the organization would be staking a measure of its reputation on his published reporting in their name. THEY then have a vested interest in making sure he does his job right, and also in selecting him over other possible writers for qualities they’ve observed as a proxy for us.

But your initial point does stand, no question.

Smock Puppet, 10 Dan Snark Master (8e2a3d)

  18. This is on of the biggest scandals in U.S. history,

Oh, come now. Yes, if borne out this is indeed a scandal, and grounds for impeachment, but it’s not even close to the biggest scandals in our history. Not only have we had much bigger scandals over the past 220 years, we’ve had bigger scandals in this administration! Even within this story, I’d say a pair of prosecutors taking bribes isn’t nearly as big a story as a governor and legislators taking bribes, and that happens with some regularity. So let’s keep a sense of perspective. This is a scandal, but Gun Walker is much worse.

    Milhouse (d7842d)

  19. Oh, you are talking about Gun Walker, not about the new scandal. Never mind, then. You’re right that if what we suspect is proven this is huge.

    Milhouse (d7842d)

  20. Bear in mind though that what we suspect has not yet been proven. It remains possible that there is a relatively innocent explanation for everything, and Holder and Obama are blameless. I don’t believe that any more than you do; but my beliefs don’t matter, only reality does, and reality has a way of coming up with the strangest coincidences. Juicier-looking scandals have turned out to be nothing before now.

    Milhouse (d7842d)

  21. “…but his listed credentials, objectively, are very thin.”

Journalistic credentials are worse than useless…IMO, of course.

    Yup…and that’s why credentials mean zippo…to me.
