Trump Did Not Know About Gang of Eight Bill When He Announced His Candidacy

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 3:12 pm

Reassuring!:

He explained the genesis of his heterodox views. “I’m not sure I got there through deep analysis,” he said. “My views are what everybody else’s views are. When I give speeches, sometimes I’ll sign autographs and I’ll get to talk to people and learn a lot about the party.” He says he learned that voters were disgusted with Republican leaders and channeled their outrage. I asked, given how immigration drove his initial surge of popularity, whether he, like Sessions, had considered the RNC’s call for immigration reform to be a kick in the teeth. To my surprise, he candidly admitted that he hadn’t known about it or even followed the issue until recently. “When I made my [announcement] speech at Trump Tower, the June 16 speech,” he said, “I didn’t know about the Gang of Eight. … I just knew instinctively that our borders are a mess.”

We are going to be in the very best of hands.

P.S. Marco Rubio is drooling to give a speech at the convention in favor of Trump, a guy he called a con artist to whom we could not entrust the nuclear codes. I love politicians!

  1. In other Trump news, he says you can’t be great without being wealthy. Seizing on that is BS because he was talking about the country. And there’s plenty of valid things to criticize him for, as the above post shows.

The BIG news of the day is Hillary Clinton LYING to everyone and violating Federal law.

She has lied and will continue to lie.

  5. “Getting back to the Milo event, I keep wondering what would happen if someone popped one of these BLM cunts in the mouth.
If Milo had knocked her cold, I’m thinking that would be the last of these confrontations. The risk assessment by these people would change overnight. Taking on the honky would suddenly come with real danger. Whatever benefits there are, assuming there are any, of refusing to fight, there’s no doubt it encourages troublemakers like that woman to get increasingly aggressive.
Watching the reaction from his fans on-line, I feel like I’m from another planet. Frankly, I cringed watching that video. Yet, the reaction on twitter suggests most people think he was the winner in that exchange. If that’s “winning” then I don’t want to see losing. To my old eyes, that looked like a white guy being dominated by a scrawny black bitch and then slinking away. I get that he is a gay guy and maybe the rules are different, but still, it was hard to watch, much less cheer.”

  6. Maybe that’s something Priebus should have done. Talked to voters. People who care enough to go and listen to speeches. Not to the Bush family. And then told Boehner, McConnell and Ryan what they needed to do.

  13. If Hillary is to win, she’ll need a big effort by the Left. Because if they stay home in November, she loses.
So she will have an enormous debt owed the Left beginning on January 20—God unwilling. (LOL)
But if she wins, repaying the debt to the Left means Elizabeth Warren on the Supreme Court or George Soros as Treasury Secretary. And Barack’s face added to Mt Rushmore.

Sorry everyone, but this a #NeverHillary election.

I have this dream, where Bill Gates is so tired of Trump that he buys up every debt that Donald owes and enforces them to the letter, forcing the Donald into personal BK. Then gives him a job in the mailroom.

  24. “she’ll need a big effort by the Left. Because if they stay home in November, she loses.”

There’s a concentration/dispersion flaw in that supposition. The Left is concentrated reasonably near to the vote for a living parasites in the Blue Hells. Both groups would have to turn slacker before a Blue Hell would shift. Charlie Cook (leans D) has a very reasonable analysis of the demographic hill Trump must overcome with strong yokel turnout in order to defeat Clinton. The votes he needs are widely dispersed and not particularly susceptible to GOTV whipping.

I follow Election Projection for current polling status of the individual states. Clinton has a very comfortable cushion at the moment.

  25. Rick, what you wrote, right there is spot on.

I will never ever forgive the goofballs who were all snooty or critical about Cruz or Rubio or (fill in the blank) and are now unquestioningly in the Trump Tank. What freaking hypocrites!

    Simon Jester (4f347d)

  30. Narciso,

Take a shot at naming the states Trump will flip to take the win. Election Projection (which leans harder R than Cook leans D) provides a nice map plus pages with latest polling available for each state as an aid. I think Trump has a shot at flipping Florida, Arizona, Ohio and North Carolina from the current map but he still comes up short.

Well, I’m assuming you don’t want Sir Hillary for Preezy. I know I don’t, I’m guessing Patterico, Papertiger, NK, The Colonel, Rev Hoagie, Dana and various assorted others here don’t, either. I mean yah, I could be wrong. Regardless of the words we’ve had though, I’m thinking that you lean a lot further right than left.

    Kevin M (25bbee)

  40. It seems that you true conservatives really do want Hillary! to win, just to punish the citizens for disagreeing with you. Of course you’d never admit such a thing, but when you have a binary choice and campaign furiously against one of those choices, you’re not really hiding your true intent.

    Mr Black (7c41e5)

  41. For the record I do not want Hillary to be president and believe she is corrupt and ridiculous.

I also think Trump could get people I care about killed and destroy any opposition to progressive government power.

Give me an option that doesn’t suck.

    Dustin (d4bf15)

  42. And we warned y’all that Trump won’t win. It’s not our fault we were correct. He says he doesn’t want our support. You guys should take a little responsibility. Trump fans are the reason Hillary smiles and cackles.

    Dustin (d4bf15)

  43. Hillary is mildly eccentric, but there have been any number of eccentric Presidents. You only need to casually peruse history to see that there’s a lot of goofiness going on in high places. And waht is it with horses? Caligula and his horse; Richard III and his horse; and let’s not even talk about Catherine the Great and her horse.

    nk (dbc370)

  44. And we warned y’all that Trump won’t win.

Ship sailed. Past tense. Trump won yesterday. There will be no contested convention. Your final wet dream has dried up. That’s right, Dusty–You lost. And let me tell you what you didn’t win:
a twenty volume set of the Encyclopedia International,
    a case of Turtle Wax,
and a year’s supply of Rice-A-Roni, the San Francisco Treat.
    But that’s not all.
You also made yourself look like a jerk in front of millions of people.
You brought shame and disgrace to your family name for generations to come.
You don’t get to come back tomorrow.
You don’t even get a lousy copy of our home game.

There is only one path of redemption left to separate yourself from being a complete and total loser.
    Don’t blow it.

  45. I see some Indian reporter, Nicole Robertson (doesn’t sound Cherokee to me) took offense at trump calling Elizabeth Warren “Pocahontas”. She claimed it was offensive. What is actually offensive is a reporter arguing with a candidate rather than reporting what he said. Notwithstanding, the lying commie’s nick name is Fauxahontas for lying about her heritage to steal a job from an actual Indian. Trump can’t even get that right.

Every time Trump says a word a leftist has a poop. It’s gonna be a fun election cycle with Trump’s mouth and all the not-so-impartial reporters falling all over themselves showing their non-impartiality.

When the GOP capitulates to Trump, as the Trumptards demand, that means there is no longer a party in opposition to big government and Constitution-shredding.
