Demonstrating His Own Special Brand Of “New York Values,” Candidate Uses 9/11 To Score Political Points

Clearly, Donald Trump has had no qualms about exploiting 9/11 for political gain. This was reinforced when the New York billionaire repeatedly invoked the tragedy during the GOP debates. As such, it’s not surprising that the iconic New Yorker, who claims that he “lost hundreds of friends” on that fateful day, made his first visit to the 9/11 Museum a mere 10 days before the New York GOP primary. Not only was it his first visit to the site, but his $100,000 donation marked his first donation to the organization. According to this report, after making the donation, Trump took aim at Ted Cruz, “This is what ‘New York values’ are really about”.

It’s unclear why it took so long for the native New Yorker to make the visit given that the memorial opened in 2011 and the museum in 2014. Perhaps that 4 miles from Trump Tower to the memorial site was too much to navigate. If so, maybe he should have considered taking the subway. I hear that’s becoming all the rage these days with the rich and famous one-percenters hoping to become the next president.

Lord help us if it comes down to a choice of crooks. I’ll have to have a couple of shots of Old Overcoat, but I’d have to vote for the asshole, because the alternative going to be a selfish, vindictive power-mad bitch. He’s just (!) a narcissistic little prick under whom the Ship of State will wander to and fro, as opposed to being driven on the rocks of tyranny full speed by Cankles- for our own good.

  9. Not surprising, from happyfeet’s link:

In the ninth episode of the fourth season of The Apprentice, Trump claimed he only paid $1 million for the building, but that it was actually worth $400 million. This episode aired November 17, 2005. On CNBC’s The Billionaire Inside, Trump again claimed he paid $1 million for the building, but stated the value as $600 million, a $200 million increase from two years earlier. The episode aired October 17, 2007 on CNBC.

It is also stated that the building was bought for $1 million, in the 2005 book Trump Strategies for Real Estate: Billionaire Lessons for the Small Investor written by George H. Ross (his legal advisor). However, it has also been reported that Trump paid $10 million for the building.[15] According to 2015 Federal Election Commission filings, Trump has an outstanding mortgage on the property in excess of $50 million.[16]

  10. The only people this 9/11 stuff fools are the people who desperately want to be fooled.

Cruz said nothing about 9/11, a national tragedy which was by no means limited to New York State or New York City. The 9/11 tragedy wasn’t remotely part of the context of Cruz’ remarks. It’s something entirely extraneous, seized upon with spectacularly con-man dishonesty by con-man Trump to distract attention and change the subject from his Trump’s own shoddy New York values, which he shares with every Democrat in New York from Bill & Hillary Clinton on down.

But there are hoards of angry people desperate to be fooled, and Trump’s giving them what they want — Drama! Entertainment!

You can’t shame the shameless, and that includes the Trumpkins who’ve wrapped themselves in this nonsense.

    Beldar (fa637a)

  11. This was reinforced when the New York billionaire repeatedly invoked the tragedy during the GOP debates.

You wouldn’t guess from the way he talked about it, or let other people think, but he was actually in Chicago that day.

From page 443, of the TIME 2006 Almanac:

On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, Adrian D. Smith, a well-known architect in the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, was in a meeting with Donald Trump. The hyperbolic new York City developer was in Chicago to go over the design of a proposed Trump residential tower in that city that he decided should be — what else! — the tallest building in the world, around 2,000 ft. In the midst of their meeting, the two men got word of the first plane that hit the World Trade Center. “When the second plane hit, we all rushed to the television to see what was happening,” says Smith. “That was the end of the meeting.” And also the end of the 2,000 ft tower. A few weeks later, Trump’s people came back with a revised proposal — at 900 ft. or so.

The terrorists won, and Donald Trump lost.

Of course, insurance and accounting factors were involved.

The tallest buildings in the world are now in the Far East, or in the Arab world. The World trade Center towers were not the tallest buildings in the world in 2001. That was the Sears tower (now the Willis tower) which is now ranked number 12 * behind also the new 1 World Trade Center. The Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago, completed in 2009 at 1,389 feet, is now number 16.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_in_the_United_States

    * The list here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_in_the_world puts the Sears/Willis tower at number 15.

Only the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, at 2,717 ft., completed in 2010, and the Shanghai Tower in
Shanghai, at 2,073 ft., completed in 2015, are taller than what Trump’s original intention was.

    Skimming the surface
    Gliding where turf is smooth
    Life’s more painless
    For the brainless
    Why think too hard
    When it’s so soothing?
    Dancing through life
    No need to tough it
When you can slough it off as I do
    Nothing matters
    But knowing nothing matters
    It’s just life
    So keep dancing through…
    Dancing through life
    Swaying and sweeping
    And always keeping cool
    Life is fraught less
    When you’re thoughtless
    Those who don’t try
    Never look foolish
    Dancing through life
    Mindless and careless
    Make sure you’re where less
    Trouble in life
    Woes are fleeting
    Blows are glancing
    When you’re dancing
    Through life…

  39. @ Bill H (#36): Trump has a long history with the phony melodrama of professional wrestling, and it’s actually very revealing personal history, I think: 6 ways Donald Trump’s wrestling career previewed his campaign.

See also this (which includes Ventura interviewing Trump) and this (warning: far-left source; I do not vouch for its credibility at all, but offer it only for purposes of demonstrating how the left would run against Trump in the general and its embedded video clips). There’s a long history of stunts and scams, hyperbole, Potemkin financing — the works.

  40. Always struck me as a swarmy campaign tactic for the situational ethisist when John Kerry supporters first started with the 9/11 pearl clutch.

How dare GWB use the Trade Center as a backdrop for the GOP convention!1!1!!

    Huh?

I still don’t get it. Someone explain.

Then after you explain it to me go over and explain it to the Uniformed Firefighters Association of Greater New York Local 94 I.A.F.F. AFL-CIO, who have been using 9/11 to bilk political concessions and freebies out of the public for fifteen years and counting.

Just Trump and you, nothing to do
What is he gonna do with you
    Now’s the chance
You and he gonna make romance
‘Cause that’s the kind of rockin’ he needs
Takes a pinch and a bite and squeeze
And they’re down on their knees
Well come on boys take a chance with him
A good ol’ romance dance with him, yeah!

Well Trump loved his way through the ranks one day
Blowin’ smoke all along the way
    Pandering, looking for fans
Decided to head for the ropetiger mans
He had nothing going for him but his smirk
When he ran into a man from SacTown
Didn’t care who or from where he came
Don’t matter where in the world yer votin’
Comes to votin’ it’s all the same
    All the same
    And he’s so insane
    But he can’t complain
What he needs to be happy
To be teh Boss with the Special Sauce
What he got to do to them
To get them to give their votes to him?
Cuz that’s the kind of votin’ he needs
Takes a rube and a squeeze ’til he bleeds
Gets ’em down on their knees.

I get you, Beldar. None of that is a surprise or an unknown to me. My simple thing was just that I never in my tiny mind ever actually equated Trump with Ventura. Equal portions of disgust and bemusement.

Not long ago I was at Breitbart (All Trump!! All the time!!!) and commented on a Trump thread that watching Trump on the stump is like watching the Hansen Brothers play hockey. A few people got the reference. Most didn’t, and not because they hadn’t seen the movie “Slap Shot”. One commenter did however ask if I was referring to the boy band Hanson.

  57. Simply Cruz voted against funding health care for 9/11 first responders. He would be best to concede NY and campaign elsewhere. There are a legion of retired cops and firefighters dying across the NY area from 9/11 related cancers; Cruz turned his back on them. Cruz can say what ever he wants, his actions speak louder. NY is going to be a Trump blowout. Though very possible the GOPe can continue to steal this race.

It’s not necessarily a lack of intelligence per se that caused 2008 or 2012, or that is a major threat to this nation and its upcoming election. Pure stupidity (ie, truly mediocre IQ) of too much of the electorate would actually be less of a threat in November than the real problem: Willful ignorance and willful naivete—ie, left-leaning biases, left-leaning emotions.

It’s the latter that makes the winner in November less likely to be Ted Cruz instead of some charlatan or RINO-fied Republican or, more likely, a crooked liberal straight out of the Argentina-type playbook.

The level of anger from one side towards the other is so great now (although I hope that fury disrupts the Democrat Party more than the Republican), I don’t see the outcome being much better than a debacle.

The argument could be made that X percent of the electorate in 2008 was truly ignorant (and not willfully so) about the current occupant of the White House and, in turn, voted for him. But that theory crashes and burns by November 2012, when ignorance about him had to be willful among those who weren’t liberal, who knew his full bio, and yet who voted the exact same way.

Four years later, the Paul-Ryan- or Kasich-type of Republicans out there (and quite a few of them do exist) who, disgustingly enough, have a soft spot in their heart for crud like Hillary, and would feel no differently regardless of the existence of Trump or Cruz, deserve to be scrutinized. 90. So stay awake sleepwalkers slick talkers
This time a native New Yorker’s
Riding a crescendo wave to save the mental
State of the fan so he can understand my pencil
Rhymes in its highest form I’m a drop it on ya like a bomb
When it explodes I’ll blow up a few casualties but so what
If you’re slow you blow you know you go I flow
I throw all pro I go to work I go to work To say rap is not work

Is ludicrous whoever said it must be new to this
When you hear me you’ll compare me to a prophet for profit not merely
Putting words together for recreation each rhyme’s a dissertation
You wanna know my occupation, I get paid to rock the nation
I go to work, I go to work, I go to work

For this pompous twat to ascribe the heroism of the few to the many is such a disgusting parody of reality it just goes to point out his shallowness. Cruz was right. Ny values are gimme money sucka.
