No Whites Need Apply

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 6:43 am

Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever, says school principal (not quite in those words):

A school principal said no white children were allowed at an after-school tutoring program, and now some parents call it discrimination.

The principal at Mission Viejo Elementary in Aurora sent a letter telling parents the program is only for students of color. Parents CBS4 talked with said they were shocked to see, in this day and age, what they consider to be segregation.

(I love how agnostic the article is on the question of whether this is discrimination or segregation. The parents say it is, the article tells us, but we won’t.)

The principal later left a voice mail for one of the white parents saying they might be able to squeeze in some help for her kid too. A quote from the voice mail:

It’s focused for and designed for children of color, but certainly, if we have space for other kids who have needs, we can definitely meet those needs.

First come the children of color — then your kid . . . you know, if there’s room.

IT IS BLATANT DISCRIMINATION!!! I weep for my daughter’s future.

  22. Is this a taxpayer funded school? If so get a lawsuit going against the school district for discrimination. There should be no special help based on race. Or the parents should sue the school and set up a program after school for whites only and see if the state comes after them. The liberals have been berating whites for years and I always feared for future generations of whites who will suffer because of liberal white hatred.

Editorials are opinion. that this is racial discrimination is not an opinion. It’s just a plain fact. That’s what should be reported. The worst kind of journalism bias is selecting facts to report and to ignore.

    Dustin (73fead)

  24. You left out a couple of relevant quotes

The new tutoring program was started by parents of minority students to help bridge the achievement gap.

The district is now clarifying that the program wasn’t meant to segregate anyone.

“But we have had lots of students sign up for the tutoring. Many of them are white and we will be accepting all of them,” Amole said.

    time123 (066362)

  25. The stair-step walkback is concerning. They meant it to be for black children only. After complaints, is “designed for children of color” but on a seats-left over basis maybe we can make room for you”, and only after the untenable position gaining publicity do they say it was all a mistake and all students get equal access and priority.

What I take from that is they were lying about a program set up for the exclusive benefit of “colored” races, though likely excluding any asian children as well.

They meant to segregate and don’t think there is much improvement if race-discrimination is the crime.

A principal who states the program isn’t really designed for them (by implication they shouldn’t want to attend) but they can make themselves unwelcome in any leftover spots if the point is pressed was clearly ready to make sure whites were not actively encouraged to make use of the program.

Disgraceful and shocking and I don’t trust them to make students of all races welcome and equal in the slots available, despite the walkback.

  27. this myth that white kids ain’t dumb needs to be nipped in the bud

Absolutely, and the first step is to read the collected works of Nancy Pelosi – she did not turn out well.

  28. “The district is now clarifying that the program wasn’t meant to segregate anyone.

“But we have had lots of students sign up for the tutoring. Many of them are white and we will be accepting all of them,” Amole said.”

time123 – So the Principal of the school sends out a letter to parents saying the program is only for children of color. Now the School District is clarifying that it is not.

The technical term for this is “damage control.”

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  29. relevant in that they reveal the program was designed in a discriminatory fashion, but since they got caught, they will now allow all students to access the program. of course, if the teachers were competent, this program wouldn’t be needed.

however the real discrimination question be gots to be axing is why the parents of the minority students are buying into the white cultural expectations of educational achievement? surely the school district diversity task force needs to address this cultural imperialism and protect the people of color from the WASP hegemony.

    redc1c4 (403dff)

  30. And the Congressional Black Caucus discriminated against Representative Steve Cohen, purely on racial grounds.

    Here’s more:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/14/us/14memphis.html?_r=0

Congressional race in Tennessee has become freighted with racial overtones almost a year before the election, with a prominent black politician saying the white incumbent cannot properly represent black voters…

….This seat was set aside for people who look like me,” said Mr. Herenton’s campaign manager, Sidney Chism, a black county commissioner…

The soft bigotry of low expectations.

As for the “race” or “ethnicity” that truly (truly!) counts to most race baiters — to all the race hustlers throughout America — it’s the “race” of leftism and protecting it in all its glorious forms.

    Mark (b40cf0)

  33. Ironically, if white administrators had created a “minority kids only” tutoring program, the Al Sharptons of the world would be asking, “Why did they set up this program ? Do they believe children of color inherently need tutoring that white kids don’t need ?! This is condescending ! This is racist !”

    Elephant Stone (eeb298)

  34. We measure white kids and black kids and then compare them racially. Is this practice racist?

The results have historically shown an achievement gap. Are not the steps we take to fix this racist?

Is busing racist? Is white flight racist?

I love how the righties in this site have become the PC police. The principal is an obvious bonehead, or didn’t think the comments would hit the wires. But the question is relativity. If the program was designed to make kids of color catch up to whites, it’s racist.

If the program is designed to help low performing kids catch up with high performing ones, it’s okay.

    Mahalia Cab (2543ef)

  35. Mahalia Cab,

Oh, please stop drinking the Angry Reverend Wright Kool-Aid.

Struggling WHITE kids were informed that they weren’t welcome because the program was initially conceived to assist children due to their skin color, rather than due to their need for help.

  36. Just as sprout will never ride the short bus, she will have a private tutor K-12.

Had her in daycare to attempt socialization with an extraordinary entrepeneurial startup in a 70’s era elementary school that was cut due to budget constraints.

Head Start bussed a group in for breakfast(sprout got hers at home). I know this is racist, but the Head Start kids had third or fourth-rate caretakers among them. Not bad people, the supervisor was probably Ok in a lesser capacity.

    Montessori it ain’t.

  37. ==Is busing racist? Is white flight racist?==

What are your thoughts on this Mahalia?

    elissa (cbd33a)

  38. In MN the Dhimmi legislature is currently considering whether to mandate local goverments accept Fed dollars and expand their meals for the disadvantaged program.

Seems the Federal handouts are insufficient and the poor kids are getting restive. On a recent snow delayed open, they demanded breakfast at 10 AM in addition to lunch, because mom didn’t make amends for the late start.

So you need to feed the poors kids, tutor them, pass them regardless of their grades, ..

We could go on but you get the picture.

    gary gulrud (dd7d4e)

  39. “We measure white kids and black kids and then compare them racially. Is this practice racist?”

Mahalia – Yes. Democrats are the party of identity politics and preserving racism and ethnic differences is one of the cornerstone policies of the party platform, as is projecting their own bigotry on others.

Isn’t a more appropriate statement “We measure the performance of kids and design programs to help children who are underperforming?” What difference does race or ethnicity make except to the race pimping grievance industry?

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  40. 34. “If the program is designed to help low performing kids catch up with high performing ones,”

I’m not trying to beat up on you, I’m just saying:

Regardless of the design, the result is a permanent underclass, helpless and useless. Can it be fixed?

There are not enough dollars in the galaxy.

    gary gulrud (dd7d4e)

  41. “Regardless of the design, the result is a permanent underclass, helpless and useless. Can it be fixed?”

gary – If Democrats and Progressives really gave a crap about educating kids in this country they would cut the stranglehold teachers unions have on the education system and support school choice.

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  42. why would they want to educate kids, only to have them grow up to be intelligent voters?

they’d never win another election if they did that…

    redc1c4 (403dff)

  43. They (“they” being the school officials and probably the news reporter too) don’t see this as discrimination, let alone racism. This doesn’t fall within their definition of those things. That’s the disconnect.

    G Joubert (71b4e4)

  44. “why would they want to educate kids, only to have them grow up to be intelligent voters?

they’d never win another election if they did that…”

    red – Very good point.

  45. Imagine a scenario under which a school district is 2/3 white but only about 1/3 of the high school varsity basketball team is white. Imagine then that a group of white parents on their own volition start an after-school basketball camp for white junior high students, to work with them on their game in the hopes of “catching them up” to their black classmates. Imagine too that they use school resources (the gym, sporting equipment) for this after-school camp.

Do you think that a white principal would be so stupid as to announce that the camp is for white students only, and then backtrack and say that black kids will be allowed in “provided there is room”?

Do you think that black parents would be fine and dandy with this set-up? Would black taxpayers in the community look upon it as a legitimate way to promote equality in school athletics?
