Detroit Mosque (Would-Be) Bomber: Another “Right-Winger” . . . Who Was Jailed for Threatening Bush

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 5:55 am

So here is a guy who parked outside a Dearborn, Michigan mosque with a truck full of explosives, described as “high-end fireworks.” Who is he?

TPMMuckraker tells us he’s mentally ill and may have praised Tim McVeigh. (I’ll buy the former but question the unconfirmed status of the latter.)

A lefty at Kos assures us he was “another crazed right wing terrorist intent on attacking one of the many ‘enemies of America’ that hate radio and conservative television hosts rail about on a daily basis.”

Just one thing: he’s a convert to Islam who was jailed for threatening President Bush.

This is the part the left doesn’t want to talk about.

Via Instapundit, Nice Deb has much more.

  1. Also jailed for threatening to blow up a Veterans Center…

Maybe I missed that day of Rush’s show, but I don’t recall those two targets being named…

  2. The only good thing to come out of this constant smearing is that by the time one nutjob finally is connected to the Tea Party, it won’t matter one iota, notwithstanding the MFM’s screeches to the contrary. Boy who cried wolf and all that.

  3. I blame Sarah Palin. And William Yelverton.

  4. Oh, is it established that he was planning to blow up the mosque? I had assumed that he was arrested there because it was his base, or because he’d stopped off to pray there.

Maybe he wanted to blow them up because they weren’t radical enough. Just as perhaps Loughner was upset that Giffords was too moderate and had voted against Pelosi.

But I’m most struck by the fact that on his previous arrest he had claimed his truck was full of explosives, when it wasn’t. This time he provided himself with “high-end fireworks”, which I take to mean very low-end explosives, i.e. not much of a threat except in his deranged mind.

  5. Sometimes, reading a post by Milhouse is like listening to our Secretary of State describe our feelings toward Mubarek.

  6. Yet another violent reichwingnut teabagger.

  7. You can tell he wasn’t a right-winger. A real right wing terrorist, Timothy McVeigh, killed 168 people, injured hundreds more, and destroyed an entire federal office building. This knucklehead was caught with some M-80 firecrackers. It’s only left wingers and Islamist sympathizers who are that ineffective.

  8. I don’t know why everyone’s upset over this – after all, there are much more important issues facing Dearborn these days. For example, making sure to intimidate and jail anyone attempting to film a bunch of Muslim Imans handing out flyers to passersby in order to enlist them in their righteous cause of dancing in the streets when thousands of US citizens are summarily murdered in one day.

  9. Andrew Sullivan (I just note this to show how far he’s fallen) linked to this story yesterday to argue – or to try and argue – that this person should be denied habeas rights and sent to Guantanamo.

Because if he was Muslim that’s what the right would advocate. Right? You Christianists?

No, it doesn’t make a lick of sense (this is an American citizen and not an alien and he’s not connected with any foreign group) but he rarely does.

You just have to shake your head at the logic behind his writings.

  10. Sadly, Dana, while there was an “own goal” in the Moscow attacks last week, nonetheless they managed to kill quite a few.

  12. He clearly wanted to destroy the mosque because it was popular with the “wrong” kinds of Muslims.

It’s only left wingers and Islamist sympathizers who are that ineffective.

A couple of Islamist sympathizers knocked down two 110-story buildings.

No, it doesn’t make a lick of sense (this is an American citizen and not an alien and he’s not connected with any foreign group) but he rarely does.

Some people do not get that our Constitution does not protect everyone in the Universe.

The First Amendment sure did not protect Ernst Zundel.

  13. A convert for the sake of the 72 virgins? Did the recruiter lead him to believe they would arrive B4 he blew himself up to kill the infidels?

I can see how that would piss a guy off.

  14. “a large but undisclosed class-C fireworks including M-80s”
    “a car full of explosives”
“he was wearing a black ski mask and had spray paint and more than two dozen high-end fireworks on him, including M-80s.”

Quote from the news stories. Isn’t it amazing that “more than 2 dozen (24)” fireworks can be translated into “a large cache” or “a car full”?

And apparently, they were not all M-80s which must have been the strongest explosive or they would have been trumpeting whatever was the largest.

To do serious structural damage with 24 m-80s, he would have needed to place them very strategically and also used a dampner medium to direct the blast into the week points. Just bundling 24 of these together and tossing them on the floor would make a lot of noise but very little damage.

Using 24 of them inside a cardboard tube that was surrounded by nails or some such would make a very effective anti-personnel device, but there was no mention of anything that was seized that indicates this was the plan.

My take on it from the news articles is that the man is deranged and thought he had enough explosives to do harm. But it does not sound like he actually had a workable plan to destroy the mosque or to harm people.

  15. It matters not. Dkos already has this one pegged as another Palinite gunnin’ for our Muslim brothas and sistuhs. Don’t look for them to change that narrative anytime soon.

  19. From an updated story on Mr. Stockham’s troubled history:

According to the Reno Gazette Journal, in 1985, Stockham was arrested after he threw a pipebomb in a trash can at Reno’s Cannon International Airport.

During the federal court trial, Stockham said he regularly communicates with extraterrestrials, and psychiatrists testified that he believed he was Christ.

In 1981, he escaped from a mental hospital, and turned himself in four months later.
In 1983, he was released from a state mental hospital after a prosecutor said he hadn’t done anything “crazy” in awhile, the paper’s archives show.

A few years before that, he kidnapped his son from a foster home in Santa Barbara, flew a plane towards LAX with a gun and bombs and demanded he be supplied with a plane to fly to Iran.

In 1977, he took his psychiatrist hostage in Century City, CA, again with bombs and guns, but surrendered after a standoff with police.

Believe it or not, there’s even more at the link.

    DRJ (fdd243)

  20. DRJ – how in the world was that guy still allowed in society?

    JD (d4bbf1)

  21. DRJ

Taking someone hostange with bombs and guns, and they are still free to do more mayhem since “1977”? then in 1981, and 1983? (oh 1985 too)

Wonder – how many times do you have to be convicted until they just keep you?

    EricPWJohnson (72c8f0)

  22. EricPWJohnson

Apparently more often than this guy. All you have to do is watch the news for the guy with many violent convictions, deportations and such who was contacted by police and let go just before he rapes or kills some innocent. It is an all too common theme in the past several years.

    Jay H Curtis (8f6541)

  23. Oh my…..has the Johnson made any statements regarding this that he’s had to retract?
