Gov. Newsom Vacationing In Montana – A State He No Long Permits State Funded Travel To Because Of The Politics There

It seems like it was unnecessarily hard trying to pin down his whereabouts:

Gov. Gavin Newsom is on vacation in Montana visiting family, I was the first to report Tuesday evening.

It was information that the governor’s office appeared loath to disclose. Although the office said Friday the governor had left California to spend time with family, it did not until Tuesday answer questions about where he was or when specifically he would return, a noticeable difference from communication surrounding other recent out-of-state trips. (A spokesperson said Tuesday Newsom hasn’t yet booked his return trip, but that he will return to California over the weekend and be back in the office on Monday.)

The governor’s office didn’t respond to a question about why that information wasn’t initially shared.

Ah:

…one possible reason could be that Montana is among the 22 states to which California has banned state-funded and state-sponsored travel, citing policies it deems discriminatory to LGBTQ+ people.

Montana is also one of the states Newsom’s office has called out for restricting abortion access. His office said in a June 24 press release that Montana will likely ban the procedure following the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, though local outlets say abortion is likely to remain legal there for the foreseeable future.

While Newsom’s office said that the vacation was not being paid for by the state, they refused to say whether his security detail is being paid for by the state. I feel safe in assuming that it is.

I don’t really care where Newsom goes on vacation if it’s on his dime. But if his security detail is being paid by the state, then that’s problematic. And hypocritical. And either way, the optics aren’t great given that he is choosing to spend money in a state that he has otherwise condemned and banned state-funded travel to because of what he identifies as discrimination and limited access to abortion. That his office was reluctant to say where he was vacationing is a tip-off that Newsom knew this would be a bit of a problem for him. Especially as he may or may not be toying with a run in 2024… Optics always matter in politics. One only has to recall that during peak Covid-19 surge, Newsom tried very hard to convince Californians to stay home during the holidays and avoid multi-family gatherings, yet it was just a few days later that photos surfaced revealing the governor and his wife at a dinner party, dining with friends and colleagues at the French Laundry.

  1. Geesh, these unforced errors just keep piling up. You’d think someone who may or may not be interested in running in 2024 would do better. That he doesn’t, demonstrates to me that either he doesn’t see what the problem is, or he sees what the problem is but considers himself above the criticism.

  2. I wonder if he could have ballot-access problems in those 22 states.

  3. i’ll bet california would’ve let his security detail go with him to russia, or china, or north korea

    but montana?? no siree!

Vice President Kamala Harris and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, #2 and #3 respectively, in line for ‘running the world’ -are women, Daughter Darth. Optics… might wanna get new script for those specs of yours, Liz. 😉

  8. The state funds thing was a dumb culture war symbol on his part. I’m glad it’s blowing up in his face. Hopefully this prevents him from running for President since I don’t want him to be president.

  9. Not to worry, it’s probably in one of the commie containment zones like Missoula or Bozeman.

And Governor Newsom is all about optics, if nothing else.

Optics… a little ‘grease on the lens’ is an old photographer’s trick to soften the image.

    Such a pretty man, ain’t he. 😉

  14. Governor Newsome says that his order never applied to something like this
s privately paid travel. (although he probably does take state employees with him)

This is just a meaningless gotcha.

Another one was about a defund the police New York State Assemblywoman who is now running for that newly drawn 10h Congressional District who moved some years ago from Harlem to the Lower East side or financial district to escape crime.

The New York Post made a lot out of that.

    But….

    1) She moved n 2016, before she became a supporter of defund the police.

    2) It wasn’t really her decision. Her boyfriend (at the time) told her to do it. And she moved in with him. He didn’t consider it safe for her. (she has since separated and now apparently has his apartment)

3)We knew that because she said it herself – tried to take credit for experiencing and knowing about crime. That was when she was first running for the New York State Assembly.

    https://nypost.com/2022/06/21/yuh-line-niou-house-wannabe-who-preaches-cop-defund-fled-from-harlem

Assemblywoman Yuh-Line Niou (D-Lower Manhattan) told a local publication in 2016 — when she was campaigning to initially get elected to her current seat — that she headed to the wealthier Manhattan neighborhood because she witnessed a pair of disturbing crimes and fell victim to one.

“I actually was robbed when I was living in Harlem. My boyfriend at the time, my fiancé, didn’t think I was safe up there, so he told me to move in, and so that’s how I moved to the Financial District with him,” she explained in an interview with the Lo-Down NY. “He was already living there.”

  15. I have no doubt Newsom will run in 2024. He’s always been full of himself.

A very effective pitch for his campaign would be, “Let’s make the rest of the U.S. like California!”

Effective, but not in the way he wants.

(Lest anyone not know, I moved out of California 13 years ago, but kept my username for consistency.)

  16. This is just a meaningless gotcha.

You live by the meaningless gotcha, you can’t complain when they throw them back at you. The whole idea of states sanctioning other states should be actionable, if not criminal. It flies in the face of the Union itself and is part of the problem, not part of the solution.

    Kevin M (eeb9e9)

  17. Groups of states sanctioning other states is seditious conspiracy.

    Kevin M (eeb9e9)

  18. Governor Newsome says that his order never applied to something like this
s privately paid travel. (although he probably does take state employees with him)

This is just a meaningless gotcha.

Sammy Finkleman, let me very clear here by repeating what I said in my post, which it seems like you missed:

I don’t really care where Newsom goes on vacation if it’s on his dime. But if his security detail is being paid by the state, then that’s problematic. And hypocritical.

  20. @13

It wasn’t really her decision. Her boyfriend (at the time) told her to do it.

That woman card is awesome. She should be catching flak for that on top of the double standard on crime.

  21. So, Sammy, what happened to Niuo’s boyfriend?

    Jim Miller (406a93)

  22. There are 18 states California won’t let employees go to at state expense. That should be an add campaign in those states.
