Fun Coda: Apparently the Cruzes Returned and Finished Their Meal

Or so we are told by the restaurant’s owners:

I hope this is correct; it does appear to be the restaurant’s actual Twitter account.

  1. I just love a happy ending.

  2. JVW,

In the comments to that tweet, a commenter claims she was there and said it all happened very quickly. She says that the staff called the police, and quickly escorted Ted Cruz and his wife away from the commotion. After protesters were gone, the couple came out and thanked the staff for their help and finished eating their dinner. What do you think? I feel like her comments are straining to give the restaurant credibility in how they handled the situation, although she has included Ted Cruz in the tweets hoping that he or his staff will respond and confirm that that is how it went down.

  3. I’m glad they called the cops. And the chef owner is the bravest man in DC! I’ll have dinner there next time I’m there.

    Patricia (3363ec)

  4. I’ll have to go there some day. Great attitude to have about politics.

    Dustin (ba94b2)

  5. For starters from the Fiola Raw Bar I would choose the Ancona selection. Says it serves 2-3. If you want any order your own. Then I’d go for the Tagliolini, and the Crushed Smoked Potatoes sound like a good side. Can’t decide on dessert. I can see why people eat at this place.

  6. What do you think?

It’s certainly different from the initial story that the restaurant staff sat passively by. I suppose some enterprising sort could contact the Washington DC Police to ask if they were called to the restaurant last night. I guess I’ll give Fiola the benefit of the doubt unless their story is disproven.

    JVW (42615e)

  7. Patterico’s post does begin with “Fake News CNN”.

    nk (dbc370)

  8. This place seems legit. Ask Ted.

    mg (9e54f8)

  9. Just desserts; fresh meals, reheated plates or doggie bags?

    The nation breathlessly awaits…

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  10. Smart move by the restaurant to have a contingency plan for screamers, including calling the cops right away.

    Paul Montagu (0e687b)

  11. A sign encouraging open carry would be far out.

  12. Smart move by the restaurant to have a contingency plan for screamers, including calling the cops right away.

Yes, trying to have your wait staff physically remove a rowdy mob of angry fanatics seems foolish.

Calling the police and waiting for them seems like the right call unless someone is on the receiving end of actual physical harm before the police get there.

This version of events also puts Ted’s unwillingness to stand up to the protestors in a much better light.

    Dave (445e97)

  13. Fiola tiramisu and a cup of coffee for the finish. Waitstaff would do well covering my back.

    mg (9e54f8)

  14. Umm, Dave. When you are in my restaurant, you are my guest. Nobody runs anyone out of my place.

    Steve57 (0b1dac)

  15. Also, while I have the highest respect for my wait staff I never ask them to do anything I’m not willing to do myself.

    Steve57 (0b1dac)

  16. Nobody runs anyone out of my place.

    Except me.

    Steve57 (0b1dac)

  17. so do they get separate tastings or does ted go vegan for the evening

i feel like you don’t always get value when you make a not-vegan place conform to these kinds of whimsies

i’ve almost never not overpaid for veggie sushi for example

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  18. here’s where you go for to get veggie sushi for a fair price they have 6 different kinds

it’s perfect for casual get-togethers where you need to accommodate people with diet things they’re doing

which is fine btw i go through phases where i’m eschewing one thing or another so it’s nice that people are trying harder to fold plant-based r plant-forward options into the mix

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  19. oops *or* plant-forward options i mean

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  20. So you’re saying that we shouldn’t make judgments before hearing all the facts? What’s the fun in that?

    Chuck Bartowski (211c17)

  21. the facts are this restaurant has made the calculation that it can’t afford to lose its conservative clientele so it has to lick-lick

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  22. The broader point was who was behind this protest, a wannabe peoples will representative.

    Narciso (8fdf0e)

  23. So you’re saying that we shouldn’t make judgments before hearing all the facts? What’s the fun in that?

I’m inclined to agree yet to be fair, how is one to know at what point they have all of the relevant facts? How/when do we know that this version of what went down is the real one? To my knowledge (again, not having all of the facts) Ted has not responded to any of this and as someone up post states, no one seems to have verified the story of the cops being called with the actual cops.

I’m pleased to see that this restaurant had plans in place. But there was a quote from the co-owner that implied that the staff did nothing….

The restaurant staff stared from the perimeter of the crowd, unwilling and perhaps unable to interfere with the escalating spectacle. “We’re not trained to deal with this,” Fiola’s co-owner, Maria Trabocchi, later told The Post. “How do you deal with things like this? It’s crazy times.”

Trabocchi had nevertheless hoped that her restaurant was exempt. Politicians from both parties come into Fiola all the time, Trabocchi said. “Everyone except Donald Trump. We’re very bipartisan by nature.”

So do we now have all of the facts? Should we refrain from judgement indefinitely?

    Skorcher (5b282a)

  24. The Fake News CNN story that was based on a couple of YouTube videos taken by the agitators illustrates an attempted Alinsky Rule Number 1: “Power is not only what you have but what the enemy thinks you have.” By any measure, the dipsticks failed but they painted it as a success.

It also illustrates Trump’s dictum that the media is the real enemy of the American people. Not to mention Mark Twain’s. But Trump comes closer than Twain, I think.

  25. Just don’t say that they’re the Cub Scouts of Antifa…that kind of scoffing downgrade of an affiliate bit the previous admin in the ass.

    urbanleftbehind (c8c554)

  26. Oh, well, at least the Fake News CNN headline wasn’t “Heidi Cruz Does Not Know How To Cook”.

    nk (dbc370)

  27. The Catholics get the ‘Court, the Mormons get the Senate Judiciary Committee. Matriarcy in action, nk?

    urbanleftbehind (c8c554)

  28. Steve57,

This seems like a hard situation. How would you handle it in your restaurant? It seems like you agree that for everyone’s safety, calling the police is the way to go.

    DRJ (15874d)

  29. The activists want everyone to pick sides but that may backfire in America. The GOP won the last time there was a binary choice. It won’t work in DC either, since it has an anti-discrimination law.

    DRJ (15874d)

  30. The Mormon Women for Ethical Government, which identified itself as a nonpartisan group comprising about 6,000 members,

These ladies do not represent The Mormon Matriarchy, urbanleftbehind. They are not even a splinter group. They are the outsiders. The real Matriarchy gives its men their marching orders at home.

  31. Still wondering why these nitwits weren’t arrested or at least cited.

  32. Jeffy Flake’s a creepy low-class dude what raised a mean lil racist and a dog killer

  34. Still wondering why these nitwits weren’t arrested or at least cited.

They may have left before the police arrived. If so, that is evidence that they have two functioning brain cells, not just one.

    Chuck Bartowski (bc1c71)

  35. If this is the restaurant’s statement (and it appears it is), then it’s good that the restaurant had a policy for incidents like this: “Per our policy for events of this nature …” That is a good idea after the Red Hen incident in Virginia, not only because DC is the center of American politics but also because DC prohibits political discrimination.

Since the restaurant had a policy and management acted quickly by removing the Cruzes, that may also have led to the incident being diffused before the police arrived. Ultimately some DC restaurants may decide to hire security if these incidents escalate or get more violent, just as some churches have hired security after several church shootings.

    DRJ (46c88f)

  36. Also, if management asked the Cruzes to leave temporarily, Ted Cruz did not have a choice between leaving and staying to debate/deal with the protesters.

    DRJ (46c88f)

  37. “These ladies do not represent The Mormon Matriarchy, urbanleftbehind. They are not even a splinter group. They are the outsiders. The real Matriarchy gives its men their marching orders at home.”

LOL… no different than any other happily married men.

  38. So a little Mormon boy comes home and he tells his mother that he is going to be in the school play. She says, “That’s wondeful, dear. Whom will you be playing?” He says, “The Mormon husband”. She says, “No, that won’t do. Tomorrow, when you go to school, you tell your teacher to give you a speaking part.”

    nk (dbc370)

  39. That group is highly suspect… . “A perusal of MWEG’s website at this snapshot in time (early April 2017) shows that its current focus is on opposing the recently proposed strictures on immigration, as well as promoting laws that would require presidential candidates to release their tax returns. It also appears to oppose revision of the Affordable Care Act, has called for the resignation of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General, and desires further investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election. On their FAQs page, with regard to whether they consider themselves an anti-Trump group, MWEG answers, “Well, you’ll never hear us say that outright, but it would be disingenuous of us to pretend that we are not part of the resistance. Like millions of Americans, we are aghast at the current state of affairs in our great nation. We refuse to normalize or accept behavior, rhetoric, or legislation that disregards the rule of law, the core principles of decency and honor, and basic human rights.”

    Non-partisan, my backside…

  40. The first thing I wondered when I saw urbanleftbehind’s link was if they were the ones who put up a tranny to run against Mike Lee.

  41. Also seem to be pro-open borders, won’t take a position on abortion and no mention of morals or morality in their charter.

    Colonel Haiku (501bf0)

  42. It’s all “is it legal?” and “is it ethical?”, claim to follow teachings of that church – a church that leaves no doubt where it stands on morality or any moral issue – most definitely not affiliated with it.

    Colonel Haiku (501bf0)

  43. I dont think this is true and I felt the vote should have been last week, for the record…but if this is true, my faith in BK’s tastes will be restored and I will give the same props that Charles Barkley gave Glen Rice

  44. you know that was Barbara Streisand, the allegation came from a rank degenerate,

    narciso (d1f714)

  45. I, nk, being first duly sworn, on oath state and depose, under penalties for perjury, that if Julie Swetnick’s fantasy passed even casual muster, hers would have been what the Democrat Smear Machine and its flunkies The Washington Post and The New Yorker would have gone with first or second and she would not have have had to resort to a creepy pron pimp like Avenatti to peddle it.
