Trump Booed at Al Smith Dinner (Video)

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 9:30 am

Donald Trump was booed at the Al Smith Dinner last night — a fundraiser for Catholic charities helping children. Politicians often attend these dinners and tell self-deprecating jokes and point fun at their opponents. But at a certain point, Trump just wasn’t funny — and it hurt to watch.

Here’s the video of Trump’s remarks. The bad times begin around 9:59:

Here’s a transcript of where Trump started to run into trouble:

Now, I’m told Hillary went to confession before tonight’s event, but the priest was having a hard time, when he asked about her sins, and she said she couldn’t remember 39 times.
(LAUGHTER)

Hillary is so corrupt, she got kicked off the Watergate Commission.

(BOOING)

How corrupt do you have to be to get kicked off the Watergate Commission? Pretty corrupt.

Hillary is, and has been, in politics since the 70s. What’s her pitch? The economy is busted? The government’s corrupt? Washington is failing? “Vote for me. I’ve been working on these problems for 30 years. I can fix it”, she says.

I wasn’t really sure if Hillary was going to be here tonight, because I guess you didn’t send her invitation by email. Or, maybe, you did and she just found out about it through the wonder of WikiLeaks.

(LAUGHTER)

We’ve learned so much from WikiLeaks. For example, Hillary believes that it’s vital to deceive the people by having one public policy —

(BOOING)

— and a totally different policy in private. That’s okay. I don’t know who they’re angry at Hillary, you or I. For example, here she is tonight, in public, pretending not to hate Catholics.

Now some of you haven’t noticed, Hillary isn’t laughing as much as the rest of us. [Editorial note: nobody was laughing at this point.] That’s because she knows the jokes. And all of the jokes were given to her in advance of the dinner by Donna Brazile. Which is – everyone knows, of course, Hillary’s belief that it takes a village, which only makes sense after all in places like Haiti, where she’s taken a number of them.

(BOOING)

The second he called her “corrupt,” this is the scene. Check the dude on the right side of the screen:

trump-booed-2

It was . . . awkward. I felt bad for Trump, the way you do when you watch any comic bomb. I didn’t think he was intending to be nasty, necessarily. The ethic at this thing is, you tell some jokes at your expense, and some at your opponent’s expense. Trump’s sin wasn’t so much that he was criticizing Hillary as that, at this particular moment, he wasn’t being funny. I wonder if maybe these were the jokes he had written for himself. I watched his entire performance — and hers too — and they both had some good lines written for them. Here are some of Trump’s that worked well:

And even tonight, with all of the heated back and forth, between my opponent and me at the debate last night, we have proven that we can actually be civil to each other. In fact, just before taking the dais, Hillary accidentally bumped into me and she very civilly said, “Pardon me.”

And I very politely replied, “Let me talk to you about that after I get into office.”

. . . .

You know, last night, I called Hillary a “nasty woman,” but this stuff is all relative. After listening to Hillary rattle on and on and on, I don’t think so badly of Rosie O’Donnell anymore.

These two were my favorites:

These events give not only the candidates a chance to be with each other in a very social setting; it also allows the candidates the opportunity to meet the other candidate’s team — good team.

I know Hillary met my campaign manager, and I got the chance to meet the people who are working so hard to get her elected. There they are — the heads of NBC, CNN, CBS, ABC — there’s the New York Times, right over there, and the Washington Post.

. . . .

Oh, this one’s going to get me in trouble.

Not with Hillary. You know, the president told me to stop whining, but I really have to say, the media is even more biased this year than ever before — ever. You want the proof? Michelle Obama gives a speech and everyone loves it — it’s fantastic. They think she’s absolutely great. My wife, Melania, gives the exact same speech

— and people get on her case!

Those were genuinely funny, and people laughed. Hillary had some good lines written for her too — and while she delivered them in that annoying Hillary way, I still laughed at a few things:

And, Donald, after listening to your speech, I will also enjoy listening to Mike Pence deny that you ever gave it.

. . . .

Now, you notice there is no teleprompter here tonight, which is probably smart, because maybe you saw Donald dismantle his prompter the other day. And I get that. They’re hard to keep up with, and I’m sure it’s even harder when you’re translating from the original Russian.

. . . .

And look at this dais — we’ve got Charlie Rose, and Maria Bartiromo, and Chris Matthews, and Gayle King, and Nora O’Donnell, and Katie Couric — this counts as a press conference, right?

. . . .

There is nothing like sharing a stage with Donald Trump. Donald wanted me drug tested before last night’s debate. And look, I’ve got to tell you, I am so flattered that Donald thought I used some sort of performance enhancer.

Now, actually, I did. It’s called preparation.

. . . .

Now, look, I have deep respect for people like Kellyanne Conway. She’s working day and night for Donald and because she’s a contractor, he’s probably not even going to pay her.

Not everyone was amused. She told this joke about Rudy Giuliani

Now, many don’t know this, but Rudy actually got his start as a prosecutor going after wealthy New Yorkers who avoided paying taxes. But, as the saying goes, “If you can’t beat them, go on Fox News and call them a genius.”

Here was his reaction:

rudy-not-amused

None of this is going to change anyone’s vote. Trump voters probably didn’t watch this — and if they hear that a bunch of elites in tuxes booed Trump, especially for criticizing Hillary, so much the better.

  4. I am sure ‘this counts as a press conference’ is much funnier me reading it than Hillary saying it in that terrible voice. Just having to listen to her drone for four years should be enough to make anyone vote against her. Except of course it isn’t.

  6. …but this stuff is all relative After listening to Hillary rattle on and on and on, I don’t think so badly of Rosie O’Donnell anymore.

The New York Post and National Review’s Morning Jolt has the word “relevant”, but in the video the wor is “relevant”

I maybe should have realized that it is easier to make errors in transcripts when you have words s that don’t quite make sense, Those errors are more common than you might think, or than I am at first thought.

But Donald trump did say “Watergate Commission” and I’m not sure if that error was deliberate and was intended to be a joke. She waa not kiicked off. She was not kept on, and put on the generall House Judiciary Committee staff by Jerome Zeifman after the House impeachment inquiry came to a rather sudden end in 1974.

  7. Patterico – An election question for you. I want to vote for someone, but I can’t figure out who. I’m a conservative and both HRC and DJT disgust me, albeit for different reasons. I’m in Pennsylvania and my vote may actually mean something, so third parties are out. How do I decide? As both VP candidates are better than the top of their ticket, I’m thinking the best way to decide which of two loathsome people to vote for is to pick the one who is most likely to be successfully impeached and ask myself if I would support his VP as president. That test knocks out Clinton & Kaine. Congress won’t impeach and remove the first female president. A President Kaine would be more honest than Clinton, but just as bad politically. I can see Trump getting impeached (with bipartisan support) and I could easily live with a President Pence. That’s how I can justify voting for Trump. Still wish Cruz was the nominee though.

    I meant:

Al Smith IV made two fat jokes about the Cardinal himself. And the Cardinal laughed. That is really rich and powerful.

  16. I want to know if the reference to the “Watergate Commission” was supposed to be a joke or a mistake, and if a joke, what was the idea of the joke?

There was once was a “Waterfront Commission.”

    Still is:

    http://www.waterfrontcommission.org/history.htm

And there was a Senate Committee that was informally called the Watergate Comittee, and held nationally televised hearings in 1993. (By the time the Whitewater and other hearings happepned in 1994 and 1995, they were o longer nationally televised.)

And Hillary Rodham, who was recommended by Bill Clintn wwhen he turned down the job, worked for the special impeachment inquiry (with a separate staff headed by John Doar, which reported only to the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. Jerome Zeifman, majority counsel of the committee thought she was unethical, in hiding committee documents from the 1970 Douglas impeachment inquiry from the minority counsel so she could write a legal argument saying taht President Nixon should not get the right to counsel without being inconveneinced by the precedent, but actually John Doar was, as Snopes makes clear if you read it right.)

Donald Trump did say “relative” and not “relevant” as some transcripts have him saying. I’d like to know who produced the good transcript and who the bad one.

You know, you Trump guys are particularly funny when you talk about Hillary conspiracy theories because Trump and Hillary are such good friends and Trump is throwing this election. just sayin’ If you’re willing to ask if Patterico coordinated with Al Franken I’m thinking perhaps you coordinated with Hillary’s campaign!

    Dustin (ba94b2)

  32. I thought Al Franken coordinated with Patterico. It’s a subtle difference, which explains why it would escape the grasp of a Clintonian.

My first thought was, “They’re trotting out AL Franken to tell us how voter fraud never happens in America?” but then he started in on Trump.
I watched quite some time to see if Franken would talk about elections being rigged.

Skirted the issue. Question never asked.

Papertiger really really wanted the GOP to nominate Hillary’s BFF for the primary. He promised Trump would cruise to a win even though we all told him that made no sense. Hillary’s BFF wants Hillary to win!

Hmm. Kinda sketchy, this papertiger guy!

    Dustin (ba94b2)

  40. Papertiger, did Trump want a free market solution to health care? I seem to recall he wanted more Obamacare. Are you trying to trick us again?

    Dustin (ba94b2)

  41. Dustin,

I would appreciate it if you would consider/discuss something, but I’m not asking you to tell me what you decide to do. Demosthenes once said he was going to vote in the way that best supported conservatism in his State. It occurs to me that since Trump is doing so poorly in Texas, then voting for Hillary in Texas is a way to turn Texas blue or at least competitive. I don’t think that is helpful to conservatism, since Texas is so important to the conservative movement. (BTW, I don’t think it means we have to vote for Trump, only that it may not be prudent to vote for Hillary.)

    What do you think?

.So was it illegal for Vince Foster to own a gun?

Well, no, but to take the gun into DC, which is where he was living.

And if he couldn’t own a gun wouldn’t that preclude suicide?

That is standard gun control talking point about how guns do not protect you. People are more likely to kill themselves with a gun than defend themselves.

And he did own a handgun. In fact, after his death, his wife took it out and gave it to investigators.

She “identified” or was persuaded to identify the gun that supposedly killed him . they showed her pixture and she agreed that gun might possibly have been owned by his grandfather.

But the point is Hillary doesn’t want to cite Vincent Foster’s death as an example of the need for gun control, or the harm of gun ownership. She doesn’t want anyone talking about the details.

    Sammy Finkelman (643dcd)

  43. Strange that Clinton wouldn’t want to reference personal experiences connected to the main argument for gun control.

How to explain the absence except culpability?

btw Sammy shows the difference between discussing issues with a Clintonian, and a normal person.

    Notice the lack of evasions.

    papertiger (021e95)

  44. DRJ,

McMullin is a certified candidate in Texas. A write in for him counts as a vote against Clinton wrt total vote. A vote for Clinton is somewhat more than a bridge too far for me.

    papertiger (021e95)

  47. DRJ, Texas is the proof conservatism works and sometimes it feels like a bulwark for the movement in a country that has shifted so far. I am glad (and not surprised) you discuss what is good for conservatism, the concept, rather than the GOP, as though the GOP = conservatism. I think the GOP in Texas can be pretty frustrating. But everything is relative, and I’ve explained my difficulty distinguishing the national GOP, the party of Murkowskis and Trumps, from a JV version of the democrat party.

My reason for voting against Trump is pretty simple: It’s fear. The internet has this rule against bringing up Hitler, but Trump represents the darkest of politicians. He means it when he praises cruelty and abuse. He is proud when his fans get violent. He is delighted by the things other politicians see as the grim cost of doing business. I see him using warfare, packing the court, seizing power, as far as he can, until he fails because he went too far. I don’t know what that failure would look like, but it would be terrible. I see Trump happily using racism the same way Bill Clinton bombed the Al Shifa Aspirin factory.

But you just raised the problem with my line of thought: what’s there to fear now? America is soundly rejecting Trump. The country rose to the occasion and saw through him. Granted, this is overgenerous. The media simply sprung a trap on the GOP and the masses followed pop culture as they always have (at least for my lifetime). But Trump’s not going to win. My tone is more humorous than frustrated these days because politics might be a sick joke, but it’s not going to be a big change. Even without the fear there’s a lot to be said for protesting Trump in the ballot box, but that doesn’t mean I have to vote for Hillary, who is awful and just happens to be less so than Trump to me.

Is Hillary coming in pretty close in Texas bad for the conservative movement? On the one hand, the worse Trump does, the better. For every voter Trump brings in, two leave (not a real stat). Our primary system is knackered and picks losers every time. Even Dubya lost the popular vote against Al Gore.

But a Texas democrat party getting a second wind from the 1980s doesn’t seem good either. Demographically speaking, it’s bound to happen, but I don’t want to help. This is unquestionably bad for the right unless the right somehow became an active part of the democrat party.

This election is very hard for the thoughtful. I’ve considered just leaving the presidential line blank. I’ll keep thinking about it. Happy to hear your insights.

    Dustin (ba94b2)

  48. I don’t care bout the GOP,
and it doesn’t matter if I care about conservatism if it is put under the thumb of a Clinton/post-Obama DOJ,
and conservative state laws are nullified by a liberal federal court.

A vote for Clinton is a vote against the rule of law and for despotism and one party rule,
    IMO.

One doesn’t need to be afraid of Clinton, one knows what she will do.

    MD in Philly (f9371b)

  49. but it’s not going to be a big change.

    Excuse me,
what country are you talking about if “not having a big change” is ok?

    LBascom (0e2db9)

  53. what country are you talking about if “not having a big change” is ok?

MD, we saw Obama weaponize the IRS, give Iran so much wealth and a path to nukes, yield to the bad guys all over the world, make healthcare more expensive, and run up the debt. Some of these mistakes are more appropriately blamed on the US Supreme Court and the GOP house of representatives, but I think on many issues blame can be shared.

Is this OK with me? Of course not. You know that. What is your suggestion to fix it? My hope was to nominate a great leader to the GOP presidential ticket who would do more than just be a better politician than Hillary, and would actually try to convince America that we need to limit the role of government, spend less, and be the good guys sometimes on the world stage (such an uncouth view these days). My hopes were actively thwarted by the GOP. By the elites and by the exact opposite of elites.

Now, I seek that change as soon as possible anyway. And I know the GOP will thwart it again.

None of that makes Hillary OK. But we’re going to have to live with it for four years, probably eight. Probably longer.

People have lived happy lives in political systems we would not find acceptable for most of human history. It’s doable.

  95. JFK about Nixon in the 1960 Al Smith Banquet (bracketed portions in original):

One of the inspiring notes that was struck in the last debate was struck by the Vice President in his very moving warning to the children of the Nation and the candidates against the use of profanity by Presidents and ex-Presidents when they are on the stump. And I know after 14 years in the Congress with the Vice President that he was very sincere in his views about the use of profanity. But I am told that a prominent Republican said to him yesterday in Jacksonville, Fla., “Mr. President, that was a damn fine speech.” [Laughter.] And the Vice President said, “I appreciate the compliment but not the language.” And the Republican went on, “Yes, sir, I liked it so much that I contributed a thousand dollars to your campaign.” And Mr. Nixon replied, “The hell you say.” [Laughter and applause.]

Nixon at the same dinner (added link mine):

I also, incidentally, have been thinking a great deal about what would be appropriate for me to say of a nonpolitical nature, what would be appropriate to say and still be true to my own conscience. Of course, I expect attacks in campaigns. One has been made upon me of which I have to take some recognition at this dinner. It was not made tonight, but made previously. I hesitate to do it. It is of such a serious nature, however, that I think before this particular audience what I consider to be one of the worst smears in American political history has got to be nailed.

I read it just a few days ago in the paper. I call it to your attention tonight. Dateline, Havana: Fidel Castro said: “The two men running for President of the United States are a couple of beardless youths.”

Now, I resent that. I resent it because, as Senator Kennedy well knows, after my first television debate, my makeup man said I had the worst beard since Sal Maglie.

BTW, that’s what I did last weekend — put aside politics to band together with 600+ old farts who all, at one time or another dating back to the 1950s, were members of the Longhorn Band at UT-Austin. Here’s the Longhorn Alumni Band halftime show, as learned in less than an hour that morning and performed that night before 96,851 fans. My starting position was one stride inside the east (visitors’) sideline on the north 30 yard-line of Darrell K. Royal/Texas Memorial Stadium, proceeding thence to the south goal line, where I executed a (very rare & difficult) four-step countermarch before proceeding back to the south 10 yard-line, from which I played the “Eyes of Texas” and then exited to the West playing “Texas Fight.” The Longhorn Alumni Band’s performance was clearly the decisive factor in inspiring the ‘Horns to a come-from-behind second-half blow-out against Iowa State.

Strange that Clinton wouldn’t want to reference personal experiences connected to the main argument for gun control.

Not only did she not do that – she didn’t talk about that asect of the DC gun control law (although there are other reasons for not mentioning that it prohibited, with very few exceptions, the registration of any new gun brought into DC after 1986, and even that only temporarily with the concurrence of the chief of police or something, because many people would think that went really too far. (if you know about taht part of the law, you know that Vincent Fostertaking a gun into DC in 1993, would have been illegal, because it could not have been registered, no matter who he was)

She talked only about the gun safety aspect of the law (that said that any gun kept at a person’s home, had either to have a trigger lock or be dissassembled.)

    http://thefederalist.com/2016/10/19/no-hillary-clinton-supreme-courts-heller-decision-wasnt-toddlers/

Here’s how the Supreme Court described the facts of the case:

District of Columbia law bans handgun possession by making it a crime to carry an unregistered firearm and prohibiting the registration of handguns; provides separately that no person may carry an unlicensed handgun, but authorizes the police chief to issue 1-year licenses; and requires residents to keep lawfully owned firearms unloaded and dissembled or bound by a trigger lock or similar device. …

The idea for the trigger lock is in part that chidren might find the gun and try it out, and stupidly kill someone, but even there, the target of the law would not really be toddlers, but 11-year old boys.

Heller, by thw way, totally begs the question of what kinds of arms must be legal, but I would think Congress could outlaw the manufactire of certain kinds of guns.
