Trump Wins Debate

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:43 pm

Well, he did.

I have a longer point about the resemblance of this election to a Hollywood movie script. Because I’m lazy right now, I’ll just give you my tweet on the matter and let you fill in the rest for now.

  9. @8– Radditz was the most obvious on defense issue– that’s her news beat but as a moderator, she really shouldn’t have gone there. Cooper just pawed the shiny object, as you’d expect.

  10. simon jester, i think mr happyfeet is channeling his inner e.e. cummings.
anyhow, this is a blog, it’s not the oxford debating society.

And DCSCA’s movie quotes are often very apropos. He even quoted a lesser-known Bogart film the other day. Sisket & Ebert give him two thumbs up! So does Michael Medved! (LOL)

  15. It all depends on your point of view. Trump’s major setback was on Friday when the donations from alt.trailerpark eased off. Now he’ll start raking them in again and be able to pay for his airplane maintenance and collect the rent on his otherwise “white elephant” campaign headquarters. How it will climax is with his paid hangers-on checking their bank balances.

  16. hillary probably would be president by now if she would have divorced bill and stood by his rape victims.

    mg (31009b)

  17. Probably not, mg. No one will admit it at this point, but at least a substantial minority of HRC voters are engaging in Bubba nostalgia, and the ones who aren’t are probably firm in their conviction that Trump is worse than Bubba (and may take joy at the prospect of HRC ordering the SS to make sure that he’s never alone with a woman who isn’t related to him until HRC leaves the White House).

    M. Scott Eiland (046eb0)

  44. Scoring it like a 3-round boxing match, IMHO Clinton won the first round, roughly the first third of the debate, but Trump avoided being knocked out. He won the next two, and won overall on points. Tonight overall Hillary was her normal debating self, a B-minus, as compared to her performance in the first debate, when I thought she earned a solid A.

CNN exactly met expectations, which is to say, they were both biased and ham-handedly, obviously so. That was a spectacular gift to Trump, which Hillary then wrapped in an extra ribbon by so often and obviously droning on past her time limits (reemphasizing her boringness and the CNN moderators’ refusal to hold her to time limits). If Trump can avoid screwing this up — e.g., with a 3 a.m. Tweet about Martha Raddatz, whether justified or not — he can benefit from this a little. I’m betting he’ll screw it up, because he’s Trump and he can’t not.

However, he did genuinely surprise me one time, and I think it’s the single best thing I’ve ever seen him do at a debate, and certainly the best moment he’s had in either of the first two presidential debates: His final answer. There was the one bizarre parenthetical false step at the beginning of hiw answer — to the effect that he wasn’t sure whether Hillary’s compliment of his children and how that reflected well on him, was really a intended as a compliment. But he actually came up with a coherent, responsive, and — altogether astonishingly! — decent answer, both in the sense of it reflecting some rare measure of non-repulsive humanity on his part, and decent in the sense of being politically shrewd.

I am relieved by his performance tonight in one respect only: If he’d had another poor performance, we’d have another week of fruitless and stupid rumor-mongering about the RNC replacing him. Duh: Do you think it was a coincidence that tape didn’t come out until after people had already started voting? That was never going to happen, and now people will shut up about it. As much as I despise Trump and regret that he is the GOP nominee, a coup would have done the party — including the GOP’s chances of retaining majorities in both chambers of Congress — much more damage than either a straight-up win or a loss in November.

  46. Trump won the debate and easily. She got the public beating she and her husband have been asking for for over 25 years. She is unrelentingly awful across the board, even as a debater.

He still hasn’t earned my vote; I remain doutbful he ever will.

  47. This was another great line by Trump – I am disappointed in congress being unable to uphold some semblance of CONSTITUTIONAL OVERSIGHT against a weaponized executive branch. amen.

  51. I peeked in at Drudge. Trump lost according to his readership. Only 58.6% say he won versus 41.4% saying Hillary did. For a site that’s 100% alt.in-the-tank-for-trump, that’s a loss.

  52. Wikileaks sez Ted Cruz, Donald Trump, and Ben Carson were the candidates Hillary wanted most to run against; hoping that one of the three would be nominated, or if not, move the other R candidates so far right as to be unelectable in the general.

Probably no more than hf. The parodies are different, the intent the same. I know the level of avoidance due to boredom is the same for me.

  60. Trump’s favorite daughter, her husband, and their two children are Jewish. If anybody is going to be purged, the Denver Guys and the Dystopia Maxes will be included.

Small consolation, but it’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good. 😉

    nk (dbc370)

  61. what a load. In the same video after the locker room talk, Trump’s actions illustrate the man.
He pauses before exiting the bus to get a handle on the over stimulated Billy Bush. Took an extended pause feigning difficulty with the door in order to redirect Bush’s mindset to something approaching acceptable for mixed company before greeting Arianne Zucker with an almost apologetic deference, making sure to mention Melania by name, showing respect for his wife and marriage, as Billy forced an awkward hug upon them both. Was Billy Bush under the influence? I’ve seen drunks with more public composure. Someone needs to get a muzzle for that guy, and NBC is running out of Betas to host their news segment / toadie up to Clintons.

    papertiger (82d7e8)

  62. Trump may have turned a 10 point loss into a 5-6 point loss. One debate to go. I maintain he’ll outperform his polls by several percent, so if they show him trailing by 10 he’ll lose by half that. But if they show him behind by five, he’ll be in striking distance.

    Gerald A (a48c32)

  63. chin up Mr. A

he’s gonna be our number one!
