Report: More Than Half of Nation’s Immigrants Receive Welfare
More than half of the nation’s immigrants receive some kind of government welfare, a figure that’s far higher than the native-born population’s, according to a report to be released Wednesday.
About 51% of immigrant-led households receive at least one kind of welfare benefit, including Medicaid, food stamps, school lunches and housing assistance, compared to 30% for native-led households, according to the report from the Center for Immigration Studies, a group that advocates for lower levels of immigration.

After all, to them it just doesn’t logicallly follow that low-skilled workers who congregate in large cities with high costs of living and who face education and language barriers wouldn’t thrive economically in that sort of environment.

They raise some salient points, though some of their arguments (e.g. the idea that if we count American-born children of immigrants in the study we should also count grandchildren, great-grandchildren, etc.) are too cute by half.
JVW (ba78f9) — 9/3/2015 @ 12:11 amIt is perhaps ironic that legal immigrants are more likely to need means-tested benefits than one might expect, but the current immigration laws favor welfare recipients.
Part of the reason for this is that the current law favors relatives of citizens and legal residents over those who have no domestic connection. Often these favored applicants are children, or elderly or otherwise unable to compete in the job market.
Meanwhile, young men and women of working age who want to come and make a life here are generally excluded if they come from a country whose quota is routinely consumed by the preferred dependent groups, such as Mexico. Some of these people enter illegally since the legal option is foreclosed. That’s not to excuse it, but that’s what happens.

From that perspective, the problem here could easily be corporate welfare where immigrants are more likely to work the poorly paying jobs that the government subsidizes by making the low wages livable.
