When Those Two Progressive White Guys Got Heckled By ‘Black Lives Matter’ Activists

Filed under: General — Dana @ 4:36 pm

[guest post by Dana]

So today, Martin O’Malley, former governor of Maryland, and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) were both interrupted and heckled by protesters during their back-to-back appearances at the progressive Netroots Nation conference.

According to Dave Weigel of the Washington Post:

Demonstrators began chanting, “What side are you on?” during a Q&A session with O’Malley. O’Malley allowed the protesters to finish, but drew boos when he said that “black lives matter, all lives matter, white lives matter”. O’Malley later admitted that he made a mistake in his choice of words, and said he did not mean any disrespect.

O’Malley was eventually forced off stage.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders also faced protesters:

The protesters remained as Sanders appeared on stage, and he took a less patient approach.

“Whoa, whoa, let me talk about what I came to talk about for a minute,” the senator said, before launching into a riff on income inequality and steps to address it.

The Vermont senator faced chants and heckling as well, but Sanders continued talking. Asked what he had done in the Senate to benefit black Americans, he started to talk about the 2010 Affordable Care Act.

“We can’t afford that!” heckled Elle Hearns, a 28-year-old Ohio coordinator for the LGBT rights group GetEqual.

And again, O’Malley tried to regain footing:

“I think that all of us as Americans have a responsibility to recognize the pain and grief throughout our country from all of the lives that have been lost to violence, whether that’s violence at the hands of police, whether that’s violence at the hands of civilians,” he said.

“Stop trying to generalize this s—!” yelled Ashley Yates, a 30-year-old activist from Oakland, Calif.

Statements followed:

Anna Galland, executive director of MoveOn, issued a statement which said: “The presidential candidates’ responses today to the powerful protest led by black activists at Netroots Nation … make clear that all Democratic candidates have work to do in understanding and addressing the movement for black lives.Hillary Clinton did not make an appearance at the conference.

A joint statement from Democracy for America and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee said: “Black lives matter and we stand in solidarity with every single organizer and activist who stood up and demanded that presidential candidates challenge power and respond to the crushing consequences of structural racism.”

Hillary Clinton did not address racial inequality at the conference as she chose to skip the event.

Well, maybe not. If all they want is face-time on the news this is fine, but if they really want to save black lives they have to take it to the street….

    Exactly!

You and O’Malley, and Sanders, etc, only shout “black lives matter!” or care about black lives if they involve people who are as idiotically liberal as you are. By contrast, if you envisioned black people that were along the lines of, say, Thomas Sowell, you’d look up, look down, look all away around, then would go to some other topic that will ping your two-faced liberalism, your two-bit, hollow compassion.

    Jim (a9b7c7)

  32. It would help to read Fred Siegel’s The Revolt Against the Masses and learn how the 60s radicals were particularly about black anger. The Symbionese Liberation Front was white women and black convicts. The women had been volunteering in prison. Much of the domestic terrorism of the 60s was black directed. The book is a history of “Progressivism” in this country since 1900.

I expect to see a lot of black militant terrorism the next decade. They are angry that “Civil Rights” hasn’t resulted in equal outcomes. Between them and the Muslims, I expect an exciting decade.

    Mike K (90dfdc)

  33. where “all lives matter” is racist.

I want to snicker and say the lunacy of political correctness is mainly roiling a leftwing setting like the Netroots Nations conference, but to me the ultimate canary in the coal mine is the reported amount of such nonsense in today’s US military, spanning issues from GLBT to Nidal-Hassan Islamism.

When you come right down to it, the figure of Uncle Sam no longer applies to a poster symbolizing the US in 2015. An image of Bruce “Caitlyn” Jenner would.

armytimes.com, April 2015: Two sexual-assault awareness events involving Army ROTC cadets on campuses thousands of miles apart combined to enrage some social-media commenters, trigger an Army Cadet Command review — and probably cause a few sore ankles.

On April 1, about 15 cadets from Temple University participated in a school-sponsored Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event, during which men stumble through a pre-set route while sporting high heels as a way to raise awareness for sexual assault victims. Several cadets walked while wearing Army Combat Uniforms, as did the school’s professor of military science, Lt. Col. Greg Nardi, who runs Temple’s Red Diamond Brigade.

Military blogs like This Ain’t Hell reported on the cadets weeks later. Around that time, another high-heel walk, this one sponsored by the ROTC brigade at Arizona State University, drew attention when a screen shot of a message allegedly from an ASU cadet complaining about his school’s event landed on Reddit’s Army channel, the Facebook page of U.S Army W.T.F! Moments, and other sites.

Army Cadet Command refused to answer questions regarding the ASU event or the alleged complaints posted online, nor would officials make the school’s professor of military science, Maj. Michelle Bravo, available for an interview.

Another Army spokesman confirmed what many commenters pointed out: Regardless of intent, wearing civilian shoes with the ACU is a violation of Army Regulation 670-1, which states, in part, that “[w]earing a combination of civilian and military clothing is prohibited, unless prescribed in this regulation or directed by the Secretary of the Army.” Similar language is included in Cadet Command Regulation 670-1, which offers ROTC-specific uniform guidelines.

Despite this, Temple cadets are far from the first ACU-wearers to participate in Walk a Mile events, including some sanctioned by military bases or Army support groups:

Photos of soldiers in ACUs and heels accompany an April 2013 news release from Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, detailing a walk co-sponsored by the installation.

Soldiers in heels marched in 2011 as part of a walk organized by Army Garrison Grafenwoehr Army Community Service’s Family Advocacy Program.

The Defense Department in 2011 posted video on its official blog of soldiers in heels walking in an unidentified event.

Come to think of it, the Islamcists actually may have a valid point about the nature of the Western World, certainly in the 21st century.

Boy, you sure nailed that one happyfeet. I was just talking with a buddy about that very subject this past week. There has been a ramping up of hate, intolerance and hostility on the left and it’s been accelerating over the past few years. Even liberal people I’ve known for years have become impossible to have a conversation with because they break out into a personal hate-filled diatribe after two sentences. I actually taped lefty going crazy at my watering hole with my phone and when I replayed it for him he looked me in the eye and told me it wasn’t him and I was lying! This in front of 4 other people who were watching the spectacle. It’s scary. They’re getting crazier and crazier and they don’t even recognize it when it’s on tape.

Hillary Clinton Black lives matter. Everyone in this country should stand firmly behind that. We need to acknowledge some hard truths about race and justice in this country, and one of those hard truths is that that racial inequality is not merely a symptom of economic inequality. Black people across America still experience racism every day. Since this campaign started, I’ve been talking about the work we must do to address the systemic inequities that persist in education, in economic opportunity, in our justice system. But we have to do more than talk – we have to take action. For example – we should make sure every police department in the US has body cameras. We should provide alternatives to incarceration for low-level offenders. We should invest in early childhood education for every child. We should fight for voting rights and universal voter registration. You will continue to hear me talking about these issues throughout this campaign and pushing for real solutions. -H
