Open Thread: NCAA Basketball

Pertinent questions:

Can Notre Dame beat Kentucky (can anyone)?
Is Tom Izzo the best tournament coach of his time?
Will Gonzaga’s size give Duke fits?
What are the chances that Rick Pitino wears his white first communion suit tomorrow?
Isn’t Wisconsin a fun team to root for?

Discuss.

  1. Can Notre Dame beat Kentucky? Don’t know, but I’ll make a call before half-time.

  2. Might as well make an outlandish statement: If Notre Dame is within four points of Kentucky at the half they will win the game.

  4. Karnowski is fun to watch, too.

    DRJ (e80d46)

  5. Yep. I think Karnowski is my favorite player of this tournament.

  6. yes-yes-yes-who cares-yes
I bet the badgers to win it all

  7. Karnowski looks huge compared to the other players. Wiki says he is 7’1″ and 289 pounds. It says Shaq was 7’1″ and 325 pounds.

  8. That is one big Polish sausage.

  9. Notre Dame and Kentucky are tied at 31 at the half. The pace of the game is to Notre Dame’s liking. My bold prediction made above is now in play.

  10. Kentucky to win going away – by at least 6 points.

  11. I think Kentucky will persevere. They seem good at that. Florida at home was ahead of Kentucky by 9 at the half, and lost by 7.

  12. The Middle East vs the NCAA tournament: I question the timing.

  13. How much of Ashely Judd’s fan antics stem from a legitimate love of her alma mater versus a desire to get increased camera time on the broadcast? I’ll be generous and say it’s 50-50.

But I would hate to be the person sitting behind her.

  14. Ashley is the main reason I hope Kentucky loses. Then we won’t have to see her or think about her until next March.

  16. I think it was in the early ’90s that the Kentucky basketball program was sanctioned by the NCAA, and I recall seeing a basketball fan — a gray-headed, older woman dressed in Kentucky blue who was clearly a lifelong fan — indignantly complaining that if the team, the coaches, the players, or the boosters wanted to cheat to win, then that should be their prerogative. What was striking was not only her age, because she wasn’t a kid, but also that she clearly felt the rules didn’t and shouldn’t apply to Kentucky basketball.

  17. This was on TV, not in person. It was and is common for fans to talk big in person, but back then it was rare for someone to say something like that on TV.

  18. Bet she’s a Patriots fan, too.

  20. Scratch that; f__ the NCAA refs. What a disgrace .

    Bugg (bd9445)

  21. Well, DRJ, who knows how many they had to interview to pick that person.

  22. The Grant kid from Notre Dame is a good player, but he hogged the ball on ND’s last three possessions. He needed to penetrate and then find an open shooter, not take the shots himself.

    JVW (a1146f)

  23. Bugg, what did you think was a bad call?

I thought it was a great game, could have gone either way.

Kind of like those Chicago Little League World Series parents who can’t understand why it should be such a big deal that their team cheated and used players from outside their boundaries. They were claiming that because it is such a great story that the rules shouldn’t be enforced. It was very similar to the way the team from the Bronx acted years ago when they were caught using a 15-year-old pitcher. That weird mindset never ceases to amaze me.

  26. A pro from Kentucky told me Kentucky Bourbon is better than Kentucky basketball.

    mg (31009b)

  27. JVW- That’s what the color guy on the radio suggested. Penetrate and pass.

    mg (31009b)

  28. JV-

Fair point. Seemed like he got the ball and had no intention of even pretending to look to pass.

That was not a blocking foul. At all.

They could’ve called a pitty pat foul on Ky. coming up the floor, but grant you that would’ve been cheap. The travesty was the blocking foul. He was set and had position.

    Maybe true.
Last year Jackson for Wisconsin took the last shot instead of passing it to an open guy under the basket and they lost to UK by a point, I believe.

  30. I don’t think he had position on the replay.

But even if you think so, I think a previous play where one Harrison was called for going out of bounds under the basket could have been the 5th foul on the ND player for sticking his knee into him.

  31. I don’t think he had position on the replay.

I agree. It looked like he was continuing to lean to his right in order to ensure contact with the driving player. I thought it was an understandable call on replay, though my initial reaction was the same as Bugg’s.

True. Many fans love their teams but I don’t think her cheat-to-win attitude was common, which is why it was so surprising. But I could see Ashley Judd ending up that way.

By the way, where are you?

  35. Next week, if Kentucky plays the way it did tonight and Wisconsin plays the way it did tonight then Wisconsin is moving on.

    NJRob (d36337)

  36. Yes indeed, NJRob
Often it really comes down to who has a hot hand. When Duke beat Wisconsin in Madison early in the season they shot like 65% from the floor, a record for any team on that court. Last night Decker had a hot hand when they needed it.

I’m in NW Ohio, DRJ. trying to help my parents get to a new equilibrium after my dad’s last stroke in November. We brought him home from rehab/nursing home about 3 weeks ago. He is not as independent as he was before.

  40. I was dying throughout the second half; when Notre Dame went up 59-53, right after UK had cut it to one (54-53), I thought for sure UK would lose. But UK hit it’s last nine shots, and held ND scoreless for the final 2:35; that’s not lucking into the win, but taking it away from Notre Dame.

The Irish pretty much controlled the whole game, and still lost. Their advantage was that while UK has the best athletes, Notre Dame had better basketball players, and that’s an advantage Wisconsin might have as well.

My hope is for UK to defeat Louisville in the championship game!

  41. And how ’bout Willie Cauley-Stein’s fingertip block on Jerian Grant’s step-back three point attempt? There might not have been anyone else in the country who could have made that play.

  46. I know the Big 10 has had at least 2 of the final four a number of times, but I don’t remember them ever getting 2 to the finals, they have played each others in the semi’s as I remember.
