Charles C. Johnson Justifies Himself In Revealing “Jackie”

Filed under: General — Dana @ 6:56 am

[guest post by Dana]

The Washington Post has an interesting interview with Charles C. Johnson, the blogger who outed alleged UVA rape victim “Jackie”. Reactions to the release of her real name and personal information have run the gamut at Patterico’s. And not surprisingly, Johnson himself now feels targeted as he has been vilified on the internet, received death threats and has already been hacked.

However, in spite of having his own real-life location revealed and serious concerns for his family’s safety, Johnson expresses no regret for his decision to reveal Jackie’s identity:

He wants revenge for what he perceives to be a rupture in the public trust, inflicted by writer Sabrina Rubin Erdely’s article. “I want [Rolling Stone Managing Editor] Will Dana to resign. I want the people who control Rolling Stone to go over all of Sabrina’s stories. And I want Jackie to get psychological help. I want all the fraternities, suspended under these dubious stories, to be reinstated.” Then, because why not: “I want the [University of Virginia] president to resign. I would like some truth.”

Read the whole thing.

  3. Yet, somehow, no one seems upset at attempts to identify “Drew,” whom Jackie claimed was the gang-rape ringleader.

    The other Dana (f6a568)

  4. Let me get this straight. It’s okay for Jackie to name the frat at which the alleged assault took place; list the occupation of one alleged assailant and the class schedule of another; and it’s okay for her to do this despite the fact that there’s evidence that this is a big pack of lies.

It’s okay for Lena Dunham to name her alleged assailant (who has apparently never met her). It’s okay for NY Times reporters to publish Darrell Wilson’s life and endanger him after he was exonerated. It’s okay for some scumbag reporter to camp out next to Sarah Palin’s house in the hopes of getting dirt on her and her teenage children.

Goose, gander, sauce. If there were a straight-faced argument that Jackie isn’t a liar (or at least did not wildly exaggerate the events of the night), it would be morally bankrupt to reveal her name. But in this situation, and the rules by which the Left plays? Go, Charles, go.

  6. Names are one thing. That was never going to stay secret – too many people know it and knew it before the story came out in the magazine. Gratuitously doxing her, and whole family, which makes no sense, is another thing again.

  8. Goose, gander, sauce. Ok, then.

Charles C. Johnson walks into Barnes & Noble and tells the lady at customer service, “I’m looking for that new self-help book for men with small penises”. The lady types into her computer, clicks a few times, scrolls a few more, and finally says, “I can’t tell if it’s in”. And Johnson says, “Yes, that’s the one”.

  10. He also managed to back up his forewarned “reveal” of her of previously fabricating rape accusations, with a widely distributed photo from 2011 of a young woman holding a sign at the “DC Slutwalk” – a young women who resembled her in some respects but is not her. That photo had, over a period of years, been from one end of the internet to the other, the photographer still has it up on her flickr account, it’s appeared everywhere from 4chan to tumbler to facebook to every rad fem pinboard in the universe. Jackie had pinned it to her own in 2013, two years after it was taken.

I don’t know where he picked it up but he missed the comment by the *actual person* in the photo so proud to see her image appear and be noticed.

He’s just so full of himself and full of wrong and libel.

That’s not to say that Jackie isn’t a confabulator, because she’s obviously been elaborating her tale over time, at minimum. That doesn’t mean the story couldn’t have been partly or mostly true when it was first told – BUT

Personally I suspect she is a borderline and a cutter – I won’t bore you with what made the penny drop on that point.

I do think she developed some drinking problems and hid them. Cutters are good at hiding.
There’s her statements and the statements of others to suggest she was unhappy at getting stuck in prepland UVA when she had been accepted to Brown, and it’s always possible she held some anger about that and was half trying to cook up some reason to leave. She did use the elaborated rape story as her explanation for why, when called in by admin to explain, she was failing all her classes.

    SarahW (267b14)

  11. There are not a lot of heroes in this story:

    – Sabrina Rubin Erdely – Fabulist.
    – Charles C Johnson – All-around douchebag and “award-winning journalist
    – “Jackie” – attention whore / confused young person
    – UVA administration – reactionary leftist idiots

And I think to myself … what a wonderful world.

  17. Charles C Johnson writes more fiction:

I apologize. I consulted with two photographic experts and I made a judgment call based on the evidence above. In the rush to publish, I screwed up and ask your forgiveness. This is a start up and while I’ve broken many stories before everyone else, I’m still human and make mistakes.

My team of researchers and I went over every photo we could of the 2011 DC Slut Walk and this is my conclusion.

I apologize for getting it wrong here. I’ll try to be more careful. I’d like to thank Steve Sailer in particular for correcting me.

The libel isn’t the participation in the DC slutwalk. It was his claimed rollout of something else – that she had fabricated or trumped up false allegations of rape before events in described in the rolling stone.

The woman he presented as her, was holding a card with a “rape story”. He considered both the existence of the previous claim (attributed to her) itself and his notion of the claim being dodgy (drunk girl gets jiggy or is jigged upon, left in a stairwell, scorned by her boyfriend and galpals.)

I know perfectly well who Steve Sailer is (whom you mischaracterize, but never mind). 35. Carlitos,

The “Jackie”/UVA story is all about guilt by association. I don’t really know who Sailer is, though I’ve come across his name before. Could you provide an example of anything Sailer has written that is demonstrably racist so we can make up our own minds?

Not so many years ago – back when I was a Democrat – Robert Byrd was a prominent Senate Democrat and a former recruiter for the Klan. This didn’t seem to be much of a problem for his Democratic constituents, many of whom were Black. Having an article published on a racist website, if that article is not itself racist, seems like a comparatively small infraction – especially in a world where explicit racism seems rampant. As a wise Latino, this is something you should understand.

Black population in W. Va. is small (3.6%). Byrd had a long history of hostility to civil rights laws. I do not think that was replicated by any other member of the W.Va. congressional delegation during those years.

Steven Sailer is a lapsed McKinsey & Company consultant whose shtick is that social sciences are reducible to anthropology and psychology, which are in turn reducible to biology. It’s now a big part of the stock-in-trade of the alt-right. Sailer himself has his fixations (e.g. blacks and Jews), but he’s also an amiable and tolerant fellow. His comment boards are filled with the most poisonous characters, however. You can find him at the Unz Review, which collects many current and former contributors to The American Conservative.

President Clinton’s mentor, Democratic Senator Fulbright, had his problems with the Civil Rights Act, though Clinton wasn’t tarnished by his association with Fulbright.

I do think this aside about Sailer speaks volumes about our willingness to make sweeping judgments about individuals based on our own narrow, tribal views.

    ThOR (130453)

It was reckless and defamatory, for the reason I explained. And it was a reckless error and a malicious charge and motive attached. It’s perfectly false that this was her crying rape in the past.

He’s already outlined his exposure motives as “revenge”. That’s his word.
His correction might save him some legal trouble – might – but it doesn’t do much for his reporting cred. Certainly not his drumbeat of the last few days that she is a serial cry-rape offender, that he’s got the goods.

Your emotion and emphasis are misplaced.

There is a reasonable argument at this time that this woman has engaged in serial fabulism since 2012. If that is true, that she had not as of 2011 is an ancillary point. He admitted his error and corrected that. A truly consequential error at this time would be mistaken identity re the Rolling Stone article. If that shoe does not drop, Miss Coakley and Mrs. Ederly will have some ‘splainin’ to do, as the article in question does have elements of literary fabrication in it.

  49. Byrd was by no means the only former Klansman/Democrat in Congress during the post Civil Rights Movement period, many of whom served with distinction.

I understand that. My reference was to the West Virginia delegation. I believe Byrd was singular there. He did not do it for his political career as some of his eulogists alleged. Organizing klaverns in a Mountain White state like West Virginia was a very strange thing to be doing in 1942.

I think you could find members of Congress who were active in community life ca. 1922 who had had Klan memberships, Hugo Black and Eugene Talmadge to name two. The 2d incarnation of the Klan was fad organization that went from nowhere in 1915 to a seven digit membership a half-dozen years later to a five digit membership a decade after that. Think of the trajectory of the Students for a Democratic Society over the period running from 1962 to 1969 or of Promise Keepers after 1997. You get past a certain set of cohorts, and you do not find many quondam Klansmen. AFAIK, James Eastland and Strom Thurmond had no Klan history.

  51. Deco, you don’t have to give up understanding that the girl has changed her story over time, and probably parts of it are fictional and parts of it confabulation.

But that was an egregious error, to say the pic was evidence she was a serial false accuser (of rape.) That wasn’t her picture and any suggestion it was she was utterly baseless, and any conclusion based on that picture which she link her pinterest board that went past “she is interested in rape activism” was baseless. What I said was that the most favorable interpretation is that he was sandbagged – by the “team of researchers” and “two photographic experts” (and that he is not very good)

You know we have software that matches up photographs nowadays.

That’s how the origin of the “Nikki Reid” photograph was found.

Saying you relied on “two photographic experts” should already be an indication something is wrong here.

But CC Johnson could just be behind the times, and gullible.

  58. Deco, if the obvious story changes make it plain the girl isn’t telling the truth, or isn’t credible about what happened to her on the night she called her pals to pick her up, and she was, at least with small twists of the arm, willing to implicate innocent people or puff up lesser bad conduct into a nighmare gang rape, for self-serving reasons, then that’s enough.

No need to lard that scenario with fat reckless careless errors and wrong facts and baseless conclusions.

The matter is under consideration as we speak. My statement concerned in what SarahW invests her high dudgeon.

When the dust settles, we may have an explanation. As of now, notable details of the story which pan out would be that Jackie exists and the Phi Kappa Psi house exists and that friends of Jackie are claiming something happened to her on some evening. Again, multi-perpetrator sexual assaults are not common (you’d expect perhaps a half-dozen or so a year in a city the size of Charlottesville), multi-perpetrator rapes less common still, multi-perpetrator rapes by bourgeois youths less common still, and multiperpetrator rapes with six assailants less common still. Either Jackie was the victim of a once-in-a-generation crime (which she did not bother to report to police) or she’s confabulating big time. It does not seem so to Sabrina Ederly and her editors because their understanding of the social profile of violent criminals is apparently derived from episodes of Law & Order, studded as it is with murderous New York patricians.

    Art Deco (ee8de5)

  62. 60. How so? There are requirements for the trot of libel now in the United States, but that doesn’t mean it’s not wrong – and also does he know what he’s talking about?

  66. He has bad motives; but he put it out there that this girl was a serial rape accuser.
He did it based on? So far, something not only wrong but recklessly wrong and easily avoided wrong. He was arrogant about his promised proof – and couldn’t let it go. Into the wee hours of last night, refused to retract when he was corrected.

  69. You know what’s not not common (sic)? Failure to report. So, as others have asked you repeatedly, what is the source of this information that you are bandying about, and what makes you think it is reliable?

For anyone else, even someone trying to make a point — and I think there’s a point to be made — that phrasing is inappropriate, indicative of spite rather than reason. I would have said, Dana, in the headline to this post, “Charles C. 80. @ Beldar,

I would have said, Dana, in the headline to this post, “Charles C. Johnson attempts to justify himself in revealing Jackie.” And in my judgment, he failed miserably in his justification, and the doxing itself is something I could never respect.

It’s funny you say this, Beldar, because after I posted this and long after I was at my office, I kept going back and forth about it (as I did when writing it) because I was unsettled about it. But after a while, I just had to acknowledge, it is what it is. Because I don’t agree with releasing home addresses etc (either in this or in the NYT reporter/Darren Wilson situation), I don’t believe Johnson really justified himself to anyone, but himself. However, some commenters here, starting at #4, clearly think otherwise and are fine with his actions.

  81. i can’t muster an opinion on Mr. Johnson

it’s the holidays and i hope he’s enjoying the season and that he gets to celebrate a little bit with loved ones and i hope he takes some time to reflect on christmas

“jackie” on the other hand, she’s way ahead of the game just not getting raped on broken glass, but i hope she too takes the time to enjoy the seasonal flavors and fragrances

For the same reason that, in amid-20th centiry cartoon, a creature walks off a cliff, but doesn’t fall down until they look down and see they are suspended in the air.

It takes time to realize that the closure has nothing to stand on. Also, it is due soon to expire.

    SarahW (267b14) — 12/9/2014 @ 10:55 am

No it isn’t. If it were, it would be in quotation marks. That’s Terrence McCoy’s word; he’s the WaPo hack who wrote the article. That’s how McCoy characterizes Johnson’s stated objectives.

Why does everyone buy into the narrative?

Leftists are caring people who have noble motives like “justice.” Conservatives are mean, greedy, bitter clingers who want “revenge.”

    Steve57 (1985cb)

  107. Johnson’s stated goals:

“I want [Rolling Stone Managing Editor] Will Dana to resign. I want the people who control Rolling Stone to go over all of Sabrina’s stories. And I want Jackie to get psychological help. I want all the fraternities, suspended under these dubious stories, to be reinstated.” Then, because why not: “I want the [University of Virginia] president to resign. I would like some truth.

Not once in the interview does Johnson say he wants revenge. Although to leftists who brag that the truth doesn’t matter when it comes to claiming Brown/Garner were killed by racism or that it doesn’t matter when slandering fraternities because…rape culture that’s what they hear when someone says they want the truth.

But why does everyone else fall for it?

    Steve57 (1985cb)

  108. Why does everyone buy into the narrative?

Suggest that one of your interlocutors fancies that the secretive character of people in his trade is normal and the other sees one sort of person as accountable and another sort of person as never accountable. The narrative-meisters are pushing against some doors ajar.

    Art Deco (ee8de5)

  109. And for his next trick, Charles “the middle initial C is for Cockless” Johnson will kick the crutches out from under a cripple. That’s the problem. Johnson found as vulnerable a victim as he could find to pick on. And all you guys are joining in on the side of the punk. Why? Because somebody else on the left did it to somebody else on the right? Because we have to teach women not to make false rape claims, so we’ll lynch this one?

Let’s take Johnsonless out of the equation. Would you guys feel good about yourselves if you were, yourselves, doing what he is doing to this girl?

    nk (dbc370)

  110. Johnson found as vulnerable a victim as he could find to pick on.

That’s your imagination working. The rest of us know nothing other than she’s young, has a certain configuration of views, is given to attention seeking now and then, and was a source for Erdely (apparently, as they have not denied it). If she’s been misrepresented by Erdely, she can take the opportunity to say so; however, the main offender is Erdely, not CC Johnson. If not, she’s been knocking about on the UVa campus spreading falsehoods. I imagine it hurts to be exposed as a serial fabricator, but unless she’s some sort of schizoaffective case, the poignancy of that is qualified.

  112. The CBS Evening News reported some new develment tonight.

They inetrviewed, and showed on camera “Andy” whose real name is “Alex”

Alex said he realized he was in the Rolling Stone story, but it didn’t happen the way she said it did. There were no wounds that he remembers, and he and the others did not go around and tell her not to report it because it would hurt their social standing. This was not just about a rape, in the Rolling Stone version, nobody , not even her friends, wanted to help her.

They also talked to the other boy, who supports the version Andy/Alex tells.

CBS was not so good about the CIA report (somebody they neglected to inform people that this stopped more than 6 years ago – the CIA has held no prisoners since 2008)

Nor was it good about the “racial divide” They compared a poll from 2009 to now. All this is actually relaly though, since 2012. And black opinion is based on what they are reading.

One interetsing finding – 51% of whites think the grand jury did the right thing in the Ferguson case (if I understand the poll correctly – the rest being did not or don’t know) but only 27% in the Staten Island case.

That’s probably because all they have heard about it is that somebody was choked to death or they haven’t heard much.

    Sammy Finkelman (03c82c)

  113. 109. It’s terrible. It looks to me, offhand, without having studied this carefully, that CC Hohnson is looking for anything bad to repeat about her, whether it is relevant or not, and not taking much care to make sure it is true, either.

    nk (dbc370) — 12/10/2014 @ 3:26 pm

When something touches on your mania, nk, you just go completely off your rocker. Yes, we have to teach women not to lie about rape.

    http://tdn.com/news/local/local-girl-lied-about-rape-father-set-free/article_bf9cac36-7c7a-11e1-a9e4-001a4bcf887a.html

In early 2001, an 11-year-old Kalama girl named Cassandra Ann Kennedy told police her dad raped her on at least three occasions. Her father, Thomas Edward Kennedy, denied the allegation, but he was convicted by a jury and sentenced to more than 15 years in prison.

In January, Cassandra Kennedy, now 23, told Longview police she made it all up. So after serving more than nine years in prison, her father was released last week and the charges against him were dismissed.

…Baur said Cassandra Kennedy will not be prosecuted for her apparent lies about her father, partly because prosecutors do not want to discourage people in similar circumstances from coming forward.

    And what were those circumstances?

…Cassandra said she got the idea of setting up her father from a friend whose stepfather was sent to prison for a child sex crime. “I thought that is what I would do to make my dad go away,” she told police in January.

Yes, we wouldn’t want 11 year old girls who get mad at their dads to be discouraged from lying to authorities about rapes that never happened.

    http://winteryknight.wordpress.com/2010/02/26/woman-recants-false-rape-charge-freeing-man-after-3-years-in-prison/

A construction worker imprisoned for nearly three years was cleared by an apologetic judge on Thursday after his accuser admitted she lied about being gang raped to make her friends feel sorry for her.

…Biurny Peguero, then 22, originally said three men, led by McCaffrey, raped her at knifepoint after tricking her into getting into their car after a night out in 2005.

She testified at his trial and said at his 2006 sentencing that the “tragedy changed my life forever.” He got a 20-year prison term.

…Peguero confessed her lie to a priest and then to authorities this year. She claimed she was raped because she wanted her friends “to feel badly” for her, and then was afraid to back down from her story as the case continued, prosecutors said in court filings this fall.

Rape is a serious crime. Which is why lying about rape is a serious crime. Prosecutors who don’t throw the book at women who lie about rape should be fired.

So what’s your deal, nk? Why do you want to make the world safe for women who lie and make up serious crimes that put innocent men behind bars for years?

    Steve57 (1985cb)

  117. 113. 109. It’s terrible. It looks to me, offhand, without having studied this carefully, that CC Hohnson is looking for anything bad to repeat about her, whether it is relevant or not, and not taking much care to make sure it is true, either.

    Sammy Finkelman (03c82c) — 12/10/2014 @ 5:17 pm

Then he, Will Dana, Sabrina Erderly, and “Jackie” all deserve each other. Because publicizing anything they hear about people, whether it’s relevant or not, whether it’s true or not, and not caring one way or the other, is how they all operate.
