Video: David Bowie Experiencing His 2004 Heart Attack on Stage?

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 10:06 pm

David Bowie is tremendously respected by a solid number of accomplished rock musicians. I was reading about his career today and learned he had not performed live since 2004, when he experienced a heart attack on stage. The Telegraph says:

In 2004, Bowie underwent emergency heart surgery to treat a blocked artery, after having a heart attack on stage while performing in Germany.

The BBC added:

The spokesman said Bowie sought treatment for what was thought to a be a pinched nerve in his shoulder after performing at a festival in the north-western German town of Scheessel.

YouTube is an amazing thing. There are clips online from the front row of the concert, and I found one that appears to show Bowie holding his arm and grimacing in pain:

I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that he was experiencing the heart attack right then.

The clip has 748 views.

Bowie also seems to lose his balance a bit in this clip:

Here are a couple of old Bowie videos of great live performances of classic songs.

  1. I’ve played his new album (well, new as in released in this calendar year) once all the way through. It received pretty favorable reviews — from National Review no less — so I will be playing it a few more times to see if some of it stays with me.

  2. Are youtube embeds allowed in the comments? It shows in the preview… My favorite Bowie video:

  3. I don’t get it. If a site decides to block certain tags in the comments, why not block them in the preview as well? Make the preview be a real preview of what will post…

  4. I love Bowie, but I ain’t watchin’. It’s not quite as indecent as NY Post pics with the caption “This is what the victim looked like JUST before he got killed!” – but close.

(BTW, on The Next Day, listen to the song You Feel So Lonely You Could Die. Bowie’s still got it, IMHO.)

  5. Bowie is a true show biz professional…the show must go on, even when the star is having a heart attack.

  6. Is this Jim Bowie person possibly a descendant of the Jim Bowie who was at the Alamo with David Crockett ?

  7. David Bowie is “afraid of Americans”…

  8. Colonel, that’s right, he did put that song out several years ago.
Oh well, I’m afraid of Spiders from Mars, people dressed in make-up who call themselves ‘Ziggy,’ and Thin White Dukes.

  9. Thin White Dukes show at teh Fabulous Forum in ’76 was rip-off. Great music, but only 1 hour in length.

  10. The show with the Spiders in 72 at the Santa Monica Civic was great.

BTW – just heard that Trevor Bolder died last month. He was a great bassist for a great band. RIP.
