The Onion Channels Hillary

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 6:23 am

In the wake of the New York Post reporting 12 dead in the Boston Marathon bombings, the Onion had an entertaining piece. An excerpt:

This Is A Tragedy—Does It Really Matter Exactly How Many People Died Or What Any Of The Details Are?

By Col Allen, “New York Post” editor

Yesterday’s violent attack at the Boston Marathon has left all of us struggling to come to terms with such a senseless display of carnage. In the wake of this devastating tragedy, we at the New York Post join the nation in mourning those who were lost in this horrible event so that we may console one another and ultimately emerge from this catastrophe stronger and with a greater compassion for one another.

And so, as we attempt to begin the healing process, let us not bicker over such trivial matters as the actual death toll and what exactly happened at yesterday’s bombing. After all, is it really important, in the aftermath of an event so disastrous and sad, to pick apart the so-called information surrounding this horrific situation and find out what actually happened?

To think, these poor victims have not even been buried yet, and some people out there are already quibbling over little details like how many people have died or what the basic facts of this tragedy even are. Can’t they see it’s not the time for that discussion?

It goes on in that vein. The amusement factor of the piece doubled after the Post published a picture of two innocent people on its front page and described them as the people sought by the FBI.

And yet . . . it occurred to a sharp-eyed reader of mine that the position absurdly attributed by the Onion to the editor of the New York Post was actually espoused by one Hillary Clinton with respect to Benghazi:

When we’re mocking the media, it’s hilarious. When a liberal Secretary of State is saying it for reals, she is Putting Republicans in Their Place.

  1. What difference, at this point, does it make that Hillary will be our next President.

    Thanks for nothing.

  2. Last week the rush to be first led to more “Dewey Defeats Truman” moments than any other time in recent memory. NPR’s “On The Media” program fairly well excoriated the MSM, including CNN’s John “It’s not my fault that my reliable source turned out to be unreliable” King.

You know it’s a bad week when Geraldo Rivera gets more things right than most ‘legitimate’ news outlets.

  4. Also, all of this Boston bombing misinformation spew has detracted from some pretty important stories . . . like Reese Witherspoon’s arrest, for instance.

  5. The New York Post not only had the wrong picture of the bombers on its front page Wednesday, as I figured out, and explained, it also had the wrong picture of the bomb!!

That bag with the brown thing in it (the brown thing was later identified as a handbag belonging to a woman standing by the barricade earlier) standing next to one of those mailboxes for mailmen delivering mail, was NOT the bomb that blew up.

The second picture, after the explosion, was deliberately blurred, and that helped make me think – I wasn’t thinking so well – that that was the bomb exploding, and that that’s why it was blurred. Not thinking. This was already after the blast.

  6. The actual bomb was a few paces to the left and hadn’t been left at the time the picture was taken.

That’s why the wounded were a little bit to the left, as the New York Times noted, speculating in Wednesday’s paper that they had moved by the time most pictures were taken.

Another proof is that the mailbox isn’t damaged, but the barricade is.

I think the FBI or somebody in the FBI or other law enforcement was deliberately misleading the New York Post and others, maybe to guard against false confessions. Someone confessing faklsely or claiming some knowledge of who placed the bomb and exactly how, would place the bomb in the wrong location.

I don’t think people even now realize that bag near the mailbox is not the bomb, and neither is the handbag the woman dropped inside it.

The New York Post story, if you ignore the headline is, strictly speaking, true, as far as we know.

The picture of these two men (one later identified himself to reporters) had as far we know, indeed been cicrculated within law enforcement with a request to find these two men for an interview – but it was never released.

Of course this leaves a mystery – why is there another bag standing there alone very close to where the bomb exploded?

Were there a lot of bags left on the street (possibly for runners wto pick up, or drink some water inside)

By the way I am still wondering at the cause of some stories placing the lord of Taylor betwene the two blast sites instead of across the street from the second one.

Don’t tell me none of this matters.

  7. * Lord and Taylor. That camera’s been there since the 1980s I read and recorded continuous video.

I still am not 100% sure where the Lord & Taylor is, but I think it very probably is across the street from where the second bomb exploded, and somebody misled a good section of the press, or the press got misled itself from some other wrong datum, into thinking it had not photographed the bomb being placed down. But it had.

  8. The picture of the wrong bag was on the front page of the New York Post of Wednesday, April 17, 2013; the picture of the wrong two men was on the front page of the Thursday, April 18, 2013 New York Post.

  12. Sammy, at this point, what difference does it make ?

  13. Sammy: We really don’t know who those people are in the photos NJ posted here. It’s a fair bet these 2 did not act alone. We know as per the Blaze the innocent Saudi is to be expelled on national security grounds. Further his visa is to go to school in Ohio. What was he doing in Boston last Monday afternoon right at the time and place of the bombing? We are to believe this is some coincidence? Not likely. “They” in the photos may not be the wrong men at all. Though clearly based on Bruno Napolitano’s statements The One’s administration hopes so. Also, last Thursday afternoon we are to beleive that the FBI agents who interviewed the older brother didn’t immediately recognize him, and no one looked at the FBI database until these 2 shot poor PO COllier.

We are almost certainly being lied to by The One.

  14. For some reason, this reminds me of the exploding free phone program — probably because it’s hard to read these stories and not feel like it’s too late to stop this madness.
