L.A. Times Flat-Out Lies, Claims Biden and Ryan “Exchanged” Contemptuous Looks and Gestures

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 8:04 pm

Who are you going to believe? The editors of the Los Angeles Times, or your lying eyes?

Vice President Joe Biden and Rep. Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin tangled over the Middle East, the economy and Medicare in a scrappy back-and-forth at their debate on Thursday night.

It was a remarkably lively exchange of scoffing, eye-rolling, smirking and mocking laughter as the vice presidential rivals argued at a table in the 90-minute face-off at Centre College in Danville, Ky.

You can read the whole article and you would never know that ALL of the “scoffing, eye-rolling, smirking and mocking laughter” came from Joe Biden.

Incredible.

  1. Unbelievable.

  2. Already, eh?

I think one could call some of Ryan’s expressions “a smirk” on occasion, but by all means any suggestion of equivalence is what the LA Times is known for.

If those Koch brothers were really that rich and nasty, they would buy the LA Times and turn it into a newspaper.

  3. I never thought he smirked, myself.

    Patterico (8b3905)

  4. But any way you slice it, you’re right: suggesting an equivalence is deeply dishonest.

  5. I can see how some would say Ryan never smirked, and I actually agree more with that. His little grins while at times listening to Biden were not “real smirky”, but I can see how someone could have called them that.

  6. There’s a way of a sincere smile with your eyes only.

I will let you call it a smirk, if you wish.

I would call Biden’s grin “trollish”. The kind of troll which hides under a bridge.

  7. Patterico, what do you expect the sycophants to say, honestly?

The first decision a potential POTUS makes is the choice of his or her running mate. The choice speaks volumes about the candidate.

    And Obama chose Joe Biden.

    Here’s a nice reminder:

So really, the Knee Pad Patrol has to make Biden look as good as they possibly can.

  8. The only rough patches for Ryan was abortion and the Afghan war. He could’ve explained the federalist case for allowing the states to decide for themselves and cutting federal payments instead of allowing that silly talking point about banning abortion. And simply NOBODY wants these wars to continue. But even here Biden was too much of an overbearing jerk to make any headway.

Sadly I think that the MFM will try like hell to make it seem like Romney?Ryan are hellbent to criminalize abortion. It’s not true, but wish Ryan was a little less Catholic and a lithe more Ayn Rand in that answer.

  9. All the assistant plagiarist-in-chief had to do was not hit his head on the table. What did you expect?

I think I said this before. The media is so far in the tank that they need a pressurized suit to find the bottom of the Marianas trench.

  10. Ryan: “2 + 2 = 4.”
    Biden: “Hahahaha!”
Ryan: “The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor.”
    Biden: (head-bobbing double-take)
Ryan: “The sun rises in the east…”
    Biden: “Obamacare will cure cancer!”
Ryan: “…and set in the west.”
    Biden:
    Ryan: “The world is round.”
    Biden: “Impossible!”

  11. The only rough patches for Ryan was abortion and the Afghan war […] wish Ryan was a little less Catholic and a lithe more Ayn Rand in that answer.

Ryan was operating under the handicap of being constrained to tell the truth, while Biden felt free to say whatever he thought would sound good.

  13. I kept switching away when Biden was bloviating because he came across as a lying, condescending buffoon. Some of the Fox undecideds looked in the tank for Obama to me. Biden has vast experience and knows foreign affairs?? What a crock.
LGFer Chas. Johnson says Biden won and wingnuts are whining. Didn’t go beyond the headline or see what his loyal sycophants said.
Here in Florida the ballot has a long list of Presidential candidates and 12 constitutional amendment questions on the absentee ballot of three large pages printed on both sides in English and Spanish. Too lazy to check what party Roseanne Barr?Cindy Shehag are running on. Green party has a lady doctor from Connecticut whom Camile Paglia is voting for because she can’t cast a vote for Romney since the GOP gave Gingrich and Santorum so much attention. Does think Romney is affable and country needs him for the economics. Surprised she gave up on Choom, what with his support for gay marriage.

  14. The Lost Angeles Times knows that Biden’s laughing, smirking, eye-rolls, and interruptions are indefensible and quite reminiscent of Al Gore in 2000 in his debate with W, so their strategy is to claim that Paul Ryan is guilty of it, too.

If the LA Times could say that Biden “won” on substance, they’d work that angle. However, even they know that Ryan won on substance, so they’re going to avoid discussing substance, and instead focus on the Orwellian “equivalency” angle regarding laughter, smirking, etc.

It’s the same equivalency angle they apply to most other paradigms.

Biden looked down quite a bit, just as Obama did with Romney. That’s a sign of a couple of guys who know they can’t defend their record of the past 4 years.

  15. Incredible? “So implausible as to elicit disbelief”

No. It’s entirely credible that the LA Times would lie by omission, distort by semantics and obfuscate the terrible performance of the “Obama’s Insurance Policy” other wise known as Joseph Biden.

To think this ignorant fool was in the Senate for years ladling out this buffoonery.

  16. ______________________________________________

they would buy the LA Times and turn it into a newspaper.

There was a time when I thought that any city should relish having a high-quality urban newspaper in its midst. But the one-sided, dyed-in-the-wool liberalism of the LA Times in particular, the NY Times and Washington Post in general, have so worn out my patience, that I now realize they’re not worth a damn.

Maybe it’s just as well, because the changing nature of the economy — and technology — makes any paper, regardless of its political slant, an increasingly declining, losing proposition.

When I pick up a hard copy of the LA Times in today’s era and see wafer-thin sections with a paltry number of advertisements, and some of those ads not even paid-for but internally generated, I don’t exactly shed a tear.

  17. Green party has a lady doctor from Connecticut whom Camile Paglia is voting for because she can’t cast a vote for Romney since the GOP gave Gingrich and Santorum so much attention.

Um, no. She said that had the Rs nominated Gingrich or Santorum she’d have held her nose and voted for 0bama, but she’s OK with Romney being president. She won’t actually vote for him of course, because she’s a D and would never vote for any R. And she wouldn’t vote Green if they’d nominated a looney like Roseanne, but they actually got a non-looney candidate this year (she says) so she’ll vote that way knowing that it helps Romney.

  18. Biden seemed deranged. Then he claimed he voted against a war resolutions and appropriation resolutions in Iraq and Afghanistan when not only did he vote in favor, he gave speeches in favor.

  19. Most hilariously stupid MSM comment: David Shuster tweets “Biden Schooled Ryan; Helped Obama in a Big Way, and Captured 2016 Dem Nomination.”

That’s weapons grade stupidity on display.

    SPQR (768505)

  20. I would seriously take the car keys away from Shuster after reading that tweet.

    JVW (f5695c)

  21. Thanks for the laugh, SPQR.

Biden captured the strange contempt the hard left tends to have towards a sober discussion from a conservative, but most people don’t like that.

Interestingly, those lefties who act this way don’t seem to realize it’s ugly.

    Dustin (73fead)

  22. Ridiculous. Believe me, the Dems are desperate to turn this into a win for them. It was not… Ryan was the adult, and this helps firm up the vote for Romney/Ryan from the center.

    Joseph D (beda48)

  23. No one noticed Biden’s antics in the Senate because he was just one of many buffons! It seems that buffonery is an inherent legislative trait in all parties. Not only here but worldwide and it is anot a recent thing – check out some of the antics of the Revolutionary War legislatures for example – including the Continental Congress.

    Michael M. Keohane (cca8f0)

  24. Here’s the rule for MSM reporting on any exchange between a Dem and a Pub, as best I can determine. When the Dem obviously errs, the report must read that the Dem errs, but so did the Pub.
