Happy Thanksgiving to Greg Packer

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 6:58 pm

And congratulations on punking CBS:

Greg Packer, meanwhile, got to see the Macy’s Day Parade and eat dinner at a Salvation Army. He said it was only natural to catch the next tradition.

“On the American shopping holiday, you pretty much try to find what you’re looking for and when you find what you’re looking for, you grab it while you can,” he said.

On this Thanksgiving, I give thanks for the existence of a man who must be quoted.

  1. I wish Greg Packer played for A&M. At least he always knows how to be in the right spot.

  4. I’m thankful that A&M is consistent. They always lose when the chips are down.

  5. I wonder whether Greg Packer actually exists or if he’s actually a tool taught to students in journalism classes. Something to use when spicing up or shaping a story.

  6. I heard this on the way home from work (get out at 2300 on the East Coast, would have been the midnight news segment) and considered posting it as an OT comment until I saw this thread.

If even about this guy (and have for years) how do the media people not catch on?

Or is it just a big inside joke now?

  7. Have Blue:

They don’t care because there is no reason to care. They control the news.

Any intelligent person with a passing interest of the internet knows about Greg Packer.

They don’t care about the intelligent because they stopped watching a long time ago.

Hence, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, CBS and CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post and USA Today, et al. They cater to the ignorant.

  8. You media people need to get yo head out of obamas ass.

  9. I thought I had read (here probably) that at least one news organization had told its people to not quote or interview him.

  10. If it matters, I think that was the AP.

Frankly, I don’t think they really care, they’ll just change the name to something like Craig Hacker.

  11. Thanks for the reminder — I was putting wire copy into our local Black Friday story. Don’t think Packer slipped in, but I’ll check to be sure.

  12. At this point, I doubt journalists want Greg Packer in their stories but (1) he shows up at a lot of interesting venues that the media covers; (2) he’s persistent; (3) his appearances typically occur on holidays when the media may have reduced staff; and (4) it’s easy to forget the Packer ban if a few months since Packer was last quoted or if the story is being covered by a younger, newer reporter. It’s much harder for him to get quoted these days but he always seems to find a way.

  13. From the wiki on Packer:

When Confessore realized it was the same “Greg Packer who has made virtually a career out of lurking where reporters are likely to show,” however, he quickly closed his notebook and began searching for a more authentic “man on the street.”

How can you find a “more authentic” man on the street than a guy who literally spends more time there than anyone else?

    LOLZ.

  14. Somebody needs to do a real interview with this guy to find out how and why he keeps doing this.

  15. Hmmm, about Greg Packer, I have a theory.

  16. At this point, I doubt journalists want Greg Packer in their stories but

After so many times, I get the feeling they think it’s funny and actually go seek him out.
