From the linked AP article:
AP cites an unnamed source saying the gunman was Major Malik Nadal Hasan, though authorities have not publicly identified him.
ropelight (cb104b) — 11/5/2009 @ 3:11 pmThis is terrorism. Plain and simple. This is not simple murder.
The targets included those who were facing imminent deployment to contain Islamic fanatacism.
This was terrorism.
Ed from SFV (4b493e) — 11/5/2009 @ 3:22 pmIt’s now been confirmed that the gunman had recently converted to?…you’ll never guess…and no one’s going to hear about it either, at least not if much of the MSM has it’s way. Contemptible.

Before pitchforks come out on shooter’s religion, remember story of Kareem Khan & Colin Powell: http://ow.ly/zGkq #fthood
The link describes how those horrible Republicans like John McCain were “polarizing the nation.”
Nice to know that as dean at Columbia, Sreenivasan is busy
Brother Bradley J. Fikes, C.O.R. (56177a) — 11/5/2009 @ 3:36 pmindoctrinatingproviding an exemplary education to future journalists.Attacking a military target is not terrorism. It is a legitimate act of war.

nk (df76d4) — 11/5/2009 @ 3:40 pmThis can be a very good test case for abandoning Doofus 43’s and AG AG’s Guantanamo nonsense and trying these f****rs by a military tribunal in the U.S under In re Haupt.
nk (df76d4) — 11/5/2009 @ 3:42 pmI started a post, but what I would say tonight would get me banned and, probably, arrested.

Gee Bradley, don’t you think it dovetails so nicely with their student’s moronic, Stepford – Wives live performance mocking Fox News, does it not?

Matador (e01f85) — 11/5/2009 @ 4:23 pmMalik’s hatred was cultivated and nurtured under the tyranny of George the Oppresser and the hate-filled rhetoric from the unhinged wingNazis like Rush, Beck, and Palin directly contributed to this, if not being directly responsible.

Brother Bradley J. Fikes, C.O.R. (56177a) — 11/5/2009 @ 4:29 pmegosintellects? The high suicide rate in the military meme is what I keep hearing on the news. The AP keeps repeating it, and anchors are trotting out psychologists and military analysts who are stressing how repeated deployments are leading to previously unseen numbers of suicides in all branches of the military.
The shooter was of Jordanian descent, and a U.S. citizen.
Dana (e9ba20) — 11/5/2009 @ 4:45 pmIt was reported he was a psychologist or psychiatrist. I don’t know where I was going with that, but there it is. It’s just so sad.

EW1(SG) (edc268) — 11/5/2009 @ 5:26 pmisn’twasn’t Hasan’s problem.No, apparently Dr. Hasan had “other issues”.
Techie (482700) — 11/5/2009 @ 5:28 pmFox just had an interview with Col. Terry Lee, who was a collegaue of Hasan’s. It’s a disturbing interview as Hasan apparently told him that ‘maybe the Muslims should get together and fight against the aggressor.’ and became increasingly agitated.

Dana (e9ba20) — 11/5/2009 @ 5:35 pmThe Army must adopt a gun control statute — maybe a ban on semi-automatic assault rifles, or high capactiy magazines.
Shipwreckedcrew (7f73f0) — 11/5/2009 @ 5:53 pmShipwrecked
You do know that two handguns were used right?
G (58c282) — 11/5/2009 @ 6:06 pmThis story is still developing. Many early “facts” now seem wrong:
1) M16s? No, handguns.
2) Muslim convert? No, always a Muslim, according to his cousin.
3) Multiple shooters? Looking less likely as time goes by.
So I warn against impulsive conclusions at this time.
gp (213d8e) — 11/5/2009 @ 6:11 pmG, I think shipwrecked is joking.
This is such a freaking tragedy. NK is right… this is a simple act of war. Islamofacists hitting a legit military target.
We must recognize that we’re in a long, long war. How sad for those middle eastern troops who love their country and want to stop Islamofascism… it’s a tremendous breach of trust for a field grade officer (this guy was a Major, right?) to kill innocent Americans.
The Army is a very PC place when it comes to this topic, and that makes it difficult to have the open discussion about how Islamofascism is the enemy.
Dustin (bb61e3) — 11/5/2009 @ 6:14 pmI believe shipwreckedcrew was mocking …

General Cone just announced the shooter is not dead but is wounded and in stable condition.
Have Blue (854a6e) — 11/5/2009 @ 6:17 pmAccording to a source quoted by ABC News, “it is rare for firearms to be on the base because they are locked up.” And according to a source of my own, who was once stationed on this base, concealed carry is prohibited.
Chad D.Baus, Firearms Association Vice Chairman
Another report stated that only Military Police carry firearms on the base. Anything used for exercises/training, are locked up immediately afterward.
Dana (e9ba20) — 11/5/2009 @ 6:18 pmNow Fox is reporting the shooter is alive. Story changing very fast.
gp (213d8e) — 11/5/2009 @ 6:20 pmSo, the plot thickens.
Techie (482700) — 11/5/2009 @ 6:23 pmThe SOB isn’t dead, according to the General speaking right now.
Matador (e01f85) — 11/5/2009 @ 6:25 pmYep, Dana, the military actually keep fairly strict control of firearms on base, including personal firearms.
SPQR (26be8b) — 11/5/2009 @ 6:41 pmThis is anecdotal information from personal experience:
Personal firearms are usually allowed to be kept in quarters on post, this includes rifles, handguns, and shotguns. They are required to be registered with the Provost Marshal. Also, many posts have shooting ranges where you can bring your personal firearms to practice. Entering post with a firearm is typically permitted, subject to storage regulations. The last post I was at required that the firearm be in a locked container and unloaded. Ammunition was also required to be in a locked container, separate from the firearm. Entering post with a firearm had to be declared. Vehicles are subject to search and violations of the regulations have harsh penalties. There are variations to these regulations from post to post, but these were fairly typical.
Stashiu3 (44da70) — 11/5/2009 @ 6:41 pmPeaceful religion.
HeavenSent (01a566) — 11/5/2009 @ 7:12 pmThis is a minor point compared to everything else that is happening in this case, but the Fort Hood commanding general has asked the Texas Rangers to help investigate.
DRJ (dff2ca) — 11/5/2009 @ 8:45 pmGen Cone also mentioned that of the two handguns, one was a semi-automatic pistol,
and that neither were Army issue.
A pistol and a revolver?
Personal weapons?
DRJ: There will be so many different investigating agencies they’ll be tripping over themselves and each other.
AD - RtR/OS! (0a796c) — 11/5/2009 @ 9:30 pmNo offense to the Rangers, who kick major ass, but this move is the beginning of doing everything possible to brand this a “law enforcement” matter and not a military/war on terror matter.
Watch the words they use closely. It will seem as nothing more than a gang shooting.
Ed from SFV (1333b1) — 11/5/2009 @ 10:27 pmWell, it surprised me because I assumed this would be investigated by federal authorities like the Army CID and the FBI. I’m not even sure Texas law enforcement could assert jurisdiction since I think the Army base is considered federal land, and it’s even more surprising that the Army would request the Rangers get involved.
DRJ (dff2ca) — 11/5/2009 @ 10:33 pmDid the guy live off-base?
Icy Texan (a040d4) — 11/5/2009 @ 10:36 pmI understand the Texas Rangers have a very fine forensics team (including a forensic psychologist). They would be invaluable in collecting, preserving and evaluating evidence, and interviewing witnesses, as soon as possible after the crime.
