Polanski May Be Locked Up for Months
Polanski may be looking at months in prison in Switzerland if he is not released on bail — slightly more than the 48 extra days that crazy judge threatened him with back in the day. But his lawyer has another idea:
The director does own a residence in the Swiss resort town of Gstaad, and his attorney in France, Herve Temime, raised the possibility that Polanski could be confined there instead of in prison.
“He has a chalet in Switzerland. He would naturally accept to be placed under house arrest,” Temime told reporters in Paris.
That’s mighty decent of him. From the L.A. Times web site, here is the prison he would be rotting in were he given house arrest:
Above: Roman Polanski “would naturally accept” imprisonment at this detention facility.
But does it have a jacuzzi? How can he have sex with underage girls without first taking them to the jacuzzi?*
It’s all so unfair.
*Oh, wait, I’m sorry. The rape he did here in L.A. was obviously the last time he ever victimized a young girl. It stands to reason, doesn’t it?
The problem with house arrest is that he is provably a flight risk.

I’m betting that Dana will appreciate the article, since it addresses some of the concerns that she (and I) have raised.
As for “house arrest” for Polanski, I was so hoping that there is some outhouse in Switzerland that could be used.
Eric Blair (184ac1) — 9/29/2009 @ 10:12 pmHoly crap that’s a nice house…
If I drug and butt-rape a 13 year old to completion, can *I* get house arrest there too???
Scott Jacobs (d027b8) — 9/29/2009 @ 10:16 pmWhen I hear “chalet” I think cottage, and my definition of cottage would be Patrick Swayze’s residence whilst teaching “Baby” to dance. I’m obviously way off-base. “Chalet” means mansion, or rustic mansion.

Think back to the end of the “Gilded Age” and the “cottages” that NYC society maintained on the shores of Newport RI.

HeavenSent (01a566) — 9/30/2009 @ 5:21 amI wonder what would happen if some Swiss national opened up on Polanski with his automatic weapon to protect his teenage daughter from him?
PCD (1d8b6d) — 9/30/2009 @ 5:56 amI think the Calif. penal system has hit the jackpot on this. Calif. gets Polanski and Polanski’s “cottage” serves as the home of 10 other Calif. prisoners on house arrest.
MD in Philly (d4f9fa) — 9/30/2009 @ 6:40 amPolanski is a definite flight risk. If released, he need only drive to France to be outside the reach of authorities. The border is open, not that French authorities wouldn’t let a citizen inside anyway.
I see no reason why any fugitive should ever be offered bail. Perhaps if the fugitive turns himself or herself in voluntarily for say, a misdemeanor or minor felony, then I can understand bail.
For child rape? No way.
Nathan (136b95) — 9/30/2009 @ 8:03 amIn case there is some reader who doesn’t recognize sarcasm, Nastassja Kinski was 15 when Roman Polanski began having sex with her in 1979.
In addition, during libel suit in the UK, “Polanski had admitted having sex with a woman four weeks after Tate’s murder and seeking solace in sex with teenaged girls from a finishing school in Gstaad, Switzerland later .” But the girls from the finishing school might have been legal, so it’s okay.
The libel suit, by the way, was against Vanity Fair, which published that he tried to pick up a Swedish woman on the way to his murdered wife’s funeral. He won and was awarded 50,000 pounds in damages.
