It’s Official — Andrew Sullivan is a Religious Bigot, and He Doesn’t Even Care To Hide It

In responding to blogger johnschwenkler for challenging him on quoting Gibson’s having taken Palin’s comments about “praying” out of context, Sullivan defends himself and Gibson thusly:

She is a long-time member of the Assemblies Of God. That’s all you need to know.

I thought we didn’t have religious tests for elected office in this country. I thought that was settled by JFK in 1960?

Lets revisit Randy Andy’s Views on whether Obama should have suffered from any over-splash from the bile one Rev. Jeremiah Wright after sitting in his pews for 20 years:

How about this:

God knows there is plenty in Wright’s theology I find repugnant — although my knowledge of the tradition from which he springs is limited. But the same could be said for the Southern Baptist Convention, for example, or the eccentric but obviously sincere former hippie, Arthur Blessit, who brought our current president to Christ. Or my own church, for that matter. What they have all said about gay people is horrifying to me, and I do not share all the political views of my spiritual leaders. The key – it seems to me – is the candidate’s public positions on these issues – not what his pastor has said and says in the pulpit. I remain in a church which describes gay people as “intrinsically disordered.” But my own record in the secular world is obviously radically different. Exactly the same standard should apply to Romney or Obama or McCain. No one should get a pass; but they also all deserve a chance to say what they think in the secular world on the relevant issues.

Everyone except those who once belonged to an Assembly of God church.

  1. Sullivan: I remain in a church which describes gay people as “intrinsically disordered.” But my own record in the secular world is obviously radically different.

    — Keep the records sealed!

This is the same type of hypocrisy as the sexism issue. She is on the “wrong” side of the political aisle, therefore the double-standard applies.

  2. “All you need to know about Andrew Sullivan is that he’a a militant homosexual.”

Somehow I don’t think Sullivan would view that statement as quite so acceptable.

  3. “All you need to know about Andrew Sullivan is that he’s a homosexual.”

I wonder if Sullivan would view that statement as an acceptable encapsulation of his political inclination.

  4. The guy is simply a mouth-breathing bigot. The comfort these vermin have in expressing hatred for believers is not news to me. Its always been there. Randy Andy is as much a Christian as he is a conservative. The guy is a walking farce.

  5. I just have this mental image of someone standing behind Milky Loads, dressed like one of the Village People, beating him with a whip, saying “keep writing, keep writing! No matter how FUBAR, write something.”

Mind you, it is not a pleasing mental image.

My favorite from Milky today is when he wrote that McCain’s candidacy is imploding. No projection as he watches what is happing to Barry, eh?

  7. intrinsically disordered

Why yes, Excitable Andy, you are.

  8. Teach — I love how he makes that claim on a day when the Rasmussen Daily tracking poll moves 3 points in McCain’s favor. In the notes they comment on the fact that its unusual for a 3 day rolling average to moved so much by 1/3 of its sample. They comment on the fact that the polling yesterday was particularly good for McCain, and combined with Monday dropping off — a day that had been particularly good for Obama — you see a huge shift from yesterday to today.

    Yep — McCain is imploding.

  9. Andrew Sullivan offers this breathless advice to Barack Obama on fighting back: “Yes, but always, always on the issues. No personal attacks. Leave those and the outright lies to the liar, McCain.”

You can’t make this stuff up about Sully any more. I know this much, we all need to work to make Sully one of Les Miserables on November 5. E.J. Dionne offers some advice:

  11. I know what you are saying, WLS. Plus, add the fact that McCain is now, according to State polls, leading in the electoral college. He is now smoking Barry in NC, leading in Florida, Ohio, and Virginia, plus, took over the lead in a few other states.

If Barry loses, who is bed bound longer: Andy or Michael Moore?

    William Teach (5d9f94)

  12. Teach, could they be bed-bound together???

  13. “intrinsically disordered.”

Why yes, Excitable Andy, you most certainly are.

  14. I have long looked for a scientific sounding name for a syndrome I see commonly: criticizing character flaws in others, and then developing those flaws yourself.

I now have a name for that personality disorder: Andrew Sullivan Syndrome.

    Eric Blair (2708f4)

  15. Ah, ref? That is a visual I really did not need! 🙂

Moore has been surprisingly quiet this cycle. I wonder why?

    William Teach (5d9f94)

  16. Eric – ASS is so appropriate, on so many levels 😉

    JD (5f0e11)

  17. Teach, is it possible that his method has failed??? Maybe the internet, and bloggers like our host, and yourself, have destroyed his success???

Maybe he is actually presumed dead, like maybe bin Laden, and we’re just unable to find the body??? (Although that body would take a LONG LONG time to disintergrate into the cave that it belongs in…..)

This sort of person is why McCain is going to win…

  19. I now have a name for that personality disorder: Andrew Sullivan Syndrome.

    Hmmm… ASS. I like, I like! 🙂

    qdpsteve (dc65ab)

  20. Hey, Q…better be careful:

    “…Hmmm… ASS. I like, I like!…”

Charlie Gibson would say that those were your exact words!

    Eric Blair (2708f4)

  21. I think this certainly points out the hypocricy of Sullivan on the issue, but I absolutely think, “All you need to know is that she’s a member of [Church X]” can be filled in such that it would be disqualifying.

If a person were a member of the Christian Identity movement, that would surely be disqualifying for most of us, no? And I confess that I’d not vote for a Scient*logist.

  22. SO long as these sorts of peole keep talking, Palin and McCain can litterally go on vacation. They need not do any actual work here.

“Never interupt your enemy while he is busy making a mistake.”

    Scott Jacobs (d3a6ec)

  23. Just to be clear: qdpsteve and Andrew Sullivan are very much like matter and antimatter. Coors beer and goose pate. They went to different high schools together.

    Eric Blair (2708f4)

  24. If that’s all we need to know, why didn’t the good journalist simply as what church she attended, instead of making stuff up?

Fish don’t know they’re wet, ASS victim Sully doesn’t know how screwed up he is.

    SarahW (a6e80b)

  25. Hmmm… ASS. I like, I like!

You do? Not that there’s anything wrong with that… 🙂

    Scott Jacobs (d3a6ec)

  26. Ask what church, rather

    SarahW (a6e80b)

  27. I hate to contradict St.Andrew of the Tased Rectum, but Palin switched from her AoG church to a non-denominational, plain vanilla Bible Church way back in 2002.

    Bob Owens (4ee6a7)

  28. Assembly of God is pretty freaky, but I do agree – what church she went to (and quit going to because it is freaky) is irrelevant.

  29. #14, Erik said, “..:criticizing character flaws in others, and then developing those flaws yourself.”

You may have the cart before the horse. The usual sequence involves developing flaws first, then strangely recognizing them in a great many others. This sort of projection and is rather common. But, you may be on to something I’m not aware of. Good job pointing it out.

    Ropelight (921f6e)

  30. Charlie Gibson would say that those were your exact words!

Eric, Charlie Gibson can blow me.

    qdpsteve (dc65ab)

  31. You do? Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

Scott, getcher head out of your… er… never mind. 😉

    qdpsteve (dc65ab)

  32. Just to be clear: qdpsteve and Andrew Sullivan are very much like matter and antimatter.

Yes, and Sulky’s opinion no longer matters to me.

    Coors beer and goose pate.

Or, qdp: chile salsa. AS: Ipecac syrup.

They went to different high schools together.

Yeah, I went to Lakewood HS and Andi went to the Springfield Heights Institute of Technology, where he learned to be a master debater and a cunning linquist.

    qdpsteve (dc65ab)

  33. Just BTW, excitable Andy can’t even stay honest long enough to get the teaching of his own church right.

The Catholic Church says that homosexual persons are loved as with any other person by God, and deserving of the same respect as any of God’s children, and also that homosexuality itself is an intrinsic disorder. The condition, not the person. But self-pitying “drama queens” (no, that was NOT a slur but a literal description of Mr. Sullivan’s personality) choose to interpret any statement on their condition as an attack on their persons.

    no one you know (1ebbb1)

  34. Ropelight may have the order correct. I guess just calling it hypocrisy is the best move.

But there is so much of it right now I get irritated. Gibson’s questions to Edwards versus Palin, for example.

    Eric Blair (36c1a9)

  35. Is Andrew Sullivan actually Betty Bowers? Hmmmm
