Philly Inquirer Columnist: Let’s Skip July Fourth and Contemplate What a Deeply Evil Country We’ve Become

Filed under: Morons — Patterico @ 6:15 pm

Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Chris Satullo says we don’t deserve to celebrate the Fourth of July this year:

Put the fireworks in storage.

Cancel the parade.

Tuck the soaring speeches in a drawer for another time.

This year, America doesn’t deserve to celebrate its birthday.

What follows is some self-flagellating pap about how we’ve taken away everyone’s civil liberties.

Tell ya what, Chris Satullo. You sit at home and contemplate your navel this July 4th. Feel free to scourge yourself if you like. I have a spare cat o’ nine tails in the shed; make sure and clean off the blood before you return it.

Even better, keep it. You’ll need it again, I’m sure.

As for the rest of you, I’ll see you on the beach.

  1. Vacuous stupidity that illustrates the author’s complete ignorance. Ignorance of history like this ought to be the subject of public ridicule. Instead, he’ll be lauded for it.

We have more civil liberties today than at any other time by any rational measure. I’ve certainly gotten tired of the silliness about Guantanamo Bay where the US has run the most humane prisoner of war camp in the history of the world and all we’ve seen is this incoherent sputtering.

  2. Never worry about this type person, they are already dead inside.

  3. I have a spare cat o’ nine tails in the shed

Hey now… We don’t need to know why you have a spare cat o’ nine tails…

What you and your wife do in the privacy of your own home is between you two… 🙂

    Scott Jacobs (d3a6ec)

  4. the US has run the most humane prisoner of war camp

Camps. Our WWII camps for Germans was freakishly kind to them. They even got semi-private housing, and ate better than a lot of citizens.

    they even got beer rations.

Though considering it was US beer, maybe that WAS a subtle form of torture…

    Scott Jacobs (d3a6ec)

  5. This sort of extremism is what happens when opinions are divorced from responsibility and posing is all that remains.

It signals that no one trusts the speaker with any serious power and that’s what he truly resents.

  6. Weren’t you just discussing the layoffs at the LAT? I’ve got one person in mind when the time comes for the Enquirer.

    Dmac (ea35f7)

  7. If he thinks this is such a bad place to live I suggest he emigrate to a place where he feels more comfortable. In the meantime, if you need help paying for overnight delivery of that cat o’ nine tails let me know. I’ll be glad to chip in a few bucks to help.

    Fritz (44e0f9)

  8. p.s. to my comment #5,

The cure is federalism, lots of it, letting the posers play in their own sandboxes, trying out their own theories on themselves instead of on others.

It’s a lot like raising teenagers, actually. You gotta spoon-feed ’em responsibility till they take to it. Not too much at once, tho; they’ll overload.

    ras (fc54bb)

  9. The local rags Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel and Palm Beach Post post innumerable letters to the editor from moonbats with a constant litany of complaints about how Republics have arrogantly usurped the constitution and how dems should get behind the yeoman efforts of Wexler and Kucinich and impeach Bush and Cheney already. The editorial boards are actually less radical left than the populace seems to be.
And of course this blog has those who claim Bush uses the constitution as toilet paper. What I never see are lucid examples of just HOW our rights are being trampled. Oh yeah, Bush lied, people died, Halliburton, greedy oil cronies, no wmds..same old BS.
Not to be pedantic, but isn’t it the Philly Inquirer and not Enquirer or maybe that’s some free rag? I recall a Philly Tribune and Philly Daily News- more sports oriented and tabloid-like.
If this nation sucks big time, why do so many desire to move here? Even far left moonbats from Europe love to come, make money and bitch about how much better Ireland or Sweden are, as examples. Ditto for people I know from Colombia and Venezuela. And let’s not forget those people who love the QUALITY medical care that’s available here without the long waits in England, Ireland or Canada.
Used to enjoy Philly Inquirer’s Pete Dexter’s takes on life, even though I suppose he’s rather liberal. I know he went to Sacramento Bee for a time and also wrote some entertaining novels, but I lost sight of him of in recent years.

  10. This poor man has had a pair of pink female panties pulled down over his forehead and he’s become unhinged. He may be a refugee from the sports pages where last night’s 3 run loss by the home baseball team is customarily reported as being as big a disaster as the sinking of the Titanic.

But mainly he’s more of a pathetic petulant poseur. He’s got the “not in my name” shtick down pat. As for me, a couple of grilled brats and a Budweiser or two by the backyard pool on the 4th of July and I’m good to go–sorry about the poor little jerk in Philly.

    Mike Myers (31af82)

  11. Maybe he’s just peeved Philly law prohibits him from shooting off fireworks…but obviously not his big mouth.

Yet isn’t is Really Something that you are able to so freely express your disgust, frustration and disappointment in our country, administration and fellow citizns, without fear of reprisal or getting arrested in the middle of the night and never being heard from again? And, even leave this country whenever you choose?

  25. I spent many hours on a spread sheet once, comparing and contrasting all of the countries in the world (about a dozen new nations ago), based on many different factors – population density, technological level, availability of health care, GDP per capita, annual weather patterns, political freedoms, etc.

Oddly enough, the United States only placed second. In first place was Australia. Which makes sense since Australia is like America’s kid brother.

  28. Carewful with that “handicap” talk. You’ll have the ADA trolls in here. On horseback, no less..

    Drumwaster (5ccf59)

  29. Yes, this nation really sucks big time. That’s why we have millions of illegals clamoring to get in.

How come the Hollyweird “stars” never actually make much effort to leave? They kiss up to the likes of Chavez, Castro and Imadamnutjob, but don’t mind rolling in all those capitalist millions. Even dickwads like Chrissie Matthews and Olberdouchebag bitch about evil GOP while collecting millions. And don’t you love how the left wants the “Fairness” doctrine reinstituted to screw talk radio on the right. Are there any leftists on radio who actually make the big bucks? Rush just signed for $400 million for another eight years. The left can’t even avoid bankruptcy as in AirAmerica.
And let’s not forget our friends Harpy and Levi who seem to denigrate the country at every opportunity. What’s preventing them from moving to Zimbabwe, Darfur or various other 3rd world hellholes whose leadership they seem to admire as superior to USA. I note that the same buffoons who hate all America stands for really seem to fear saying anything negative about the Religion of Peace, the UN or the sophisticated Eurowads.

Anyways, go light off some fireworks and stuff! Any country’s National Day should be celebrated, so long as it’s good stuff you’re celebrating. I’d imagine not too many Cubans want to celebrate Castro Day or whatever the hell they call it over there.

PS ex american woman, can I have your citizenship before you leave? Thx.

    Gregory (f7735e)

  34. And why does the Dinosaur, Drive-By, Mainstream Media not understand that regular people do NOT want to read their pap?! The Left Angeles Times is bleeding and they are not even putting a band-aid to stop said bleeding. They are putting a wet paper towel on the bleeding! Just wait when the first major American city does NOT have a newspaper. Sad, so sad.

    Mark J. Goluskin (d671ab)

  35. I’m sure the “Ex-American” person was a troll. It wasn’t sufficiently incoherent to be genuine.

More seriously, the real problem is that we do not teach anything like history. Thus, most people who have grown up recently don’t have any context for ANY of the problems that we are currently experiencing.

On the other hand, this isn’t new. Look at the Copperheads during the Civil War. And I believe that some newspapers at the time called Lincoln “an ape.” Makes you think about the folks who call GW Bush a “chimp.”

    Eric Blair (d7a9a9)

  36. The future is clear and will come. Hating and denouncing it, while leaving it parents in office will have no effect. Around the world the elite, threatened by the exultation of the common people in America, speak with a single voice: America is the polluter; America is Capitalist (and therefore Evil); America is secretly run Jews er, Neocons (and we al know how the world feels about them)

Even Christians despise and hate America (Obama’s kind of Christian, the elite who control Christian institutions, and have had this control for decades).

If you are young enough, America will not survive your lifetime as nation or as a people. Already its Constitution has been repudiated in the 20th century by both its political parties. Who know defends the founding fathers and teaches their wisdom?

Have the young admired the slavers and racists (Washington, Jefferson, Hamilton) or have they admired Lenin, Mao, Castro, Che, Chavez…?

  38. X-American Woman, and those who think like her, May I suggest you relocate to Zimbabwe? Robert Mugabe has implemented the Democrat platform and philosophy. No one is allowed to own land that isn’t loyal to Mugabe, and the opposition is jailed, beaten, and raped. Inflation is a million %. You all can be millionaires and live like Kennedys overnight.

    Good riddance to bad rubbish.

  39. The Philly Inquirer is the far-left, Times wannabe paper in this town. Even though Philly is a solid left-liberal town, the Inquirer can’t give its papers away. It is hemorraging readership. Recently sold, its new owners are having trouble making their debt payments, and rumors are rampant that the paper is about to go under. And wouldn’t that be a shame! Verdict: too lame and leftist even for Philadelphia.

The whiny, ungrateful, unAmerican Mr. Satulo will be unemployed soon enough.

    Have a great 4th everybody!

    Peg C. (b50956)

  43. Levi, you can lead the way to Zimbabwe. People like you don’t understand how good it is in the US. We have people illegally trying to get in. We don’t have a problem with stopping people from leaving. Unlike the Hotel California, you can leave anytime you like.

Levi, you are an insult to America, as well as Mr. Satullo. Both of you should try Zimbabwe. Try insulting Mugabe as you do Bush. I want to know if either of you would live to regret your total stupidity.

  47. Does anyone recall when Philly was a three newspaper town? I think the Evening Bulletin folded ages ago, but can’t recall why.

I recall Las Vegas had the Review-Journal and the Sun but no idea if they too were far left jackasses.

Trouble with those pissed off Hollywood has-beens and never weres is that they don’t leave. I guess johnny depp did move to France, but the snakes who don’t threaten leaving do manage to go abroad and kiss despotic asses. Think Kevin Spacey, Sean Penn, Naomi Campbell, Oliver Stone, and other unpatriotic shitheads.

Perhaps one problem that both Levi and Jharp have is where they live in flyover country amongst regular people who are not moonbats. Big Sky country and Indiana might well be happy if those two dudes moved to Berkeley, Madison, Manhattan, or my own highly howling, politically dysfunctional Palm Beach county. I can picture levi and harp protesting in mode of the weird peeps seen at zombietime dot com. Hey, maybe they’d fall in love with the naked old creep with peace signs painted on his body and the saline-injected bloated testicles?

Well, Levi surely won’t opt for Zimbabwe, North Korea or ven Libya…maybe New Jersey, Bridgeport Ct or Miami’s Liberty City?
Why is it that some really quite lovely cities are infested with strange ideas, like giving sanctuary to illegal criminals? S.F> actually sends gangbangers back to Honduras to avoid arrest and deportation, but gives them a return ticket??What’s with that? And Gavin Newsome says its not under his mayoral power to stop it or interefere and yet he can marry gays? Even with the dipwads, I’d like to live in SF myself, but way too expensive. How do people that of the elte class actually survive? Roommates? Ditto for NYC.
Anyway I don’t think legal scholar Ann Althouse has referred to those student murders in her Madison, but she does take some nice pics.

  54. 51, madmax, Bridgeport is a very corrupt Democrat city. In fact, it is almost Zimbabwe. Glad I don’t have to drive through there anymore.

Crazy woman that almost killed me, my then wife, and our eldest daughter was from Bridgeport. She thought nothing of driving the wrong way on CT 25 and down an exit ramp from the Merrit Parkway to straddle the east bound lane because the cement divider prevented her from going west on the Merrit.

Actually, madmaxx, the Bulletin rose up from the ashes a year or two ago and has reestablished itself as the right of center alternative to the leftist Inquirer. Its circulation #s are not to the Inquirer level yet, but it is on an upward trajectory, while the the Inquirer is in full nosedive.

for a breath of fresh air, and a little insight into how it is kicking the Inquirer’s butt, see today’s front page, here

  56. #50 Levi- I am so sorry. It seems I forget that places like Montana, Idaho and New Hampshire are being overrun by leftists looking for lower taxes and property costs. They soon screw up paradise. I think out west it is referred to as “Californication” because of white flight from Ca. Not aware whether or not you are a native Montanan or jharp was born in Indiana.

#54 PCD- You bring back memories from the 60s. I knew Bridgeport sucked big time then. I think Puerto Ricans took the rap for much of that. I was working evening at Skorsky in Stratford and would race across that bridge spanning the river every night hitting maximum speed in an old Jag roadster. Plus at 18 I was one of those maniac punks who got drunk in White Plains and sped back on the Ct. Turnpike. Thankfully I never hurt anyone. Back then drinking age was 21 in Ct. Signs read he who drinks and drives gets trooper as chaser and a recent governor of the time was strict because his kid was killed?

#55 Thanks for the update James23. I did like Bulletin when it was the evening competition. One wonders why liberals cannot or won’t support their own radical ideas within liberal papers and radio stations. Of course it helps that taxpayers of all stripes support PBS and NPR with tax dollars.

    madmax333 (96d122)

  57. The lefties keep making statements like #12 and #41 and then wonder why people don’t think them patriotic. That woman in Denver, who sang “The black national anthem” instead of the real one, may have done it for publicity, in which case it was a big success, or simply out of spite but that is another example. When I was a kid (Admittedly a long time ago), I read a story called “The Man Without a Country.” No one would understand it now.

  60. Chris Satullo used to be the editorial page editor of The Philadelphia Inquirer, and, as such, he took exception with my criticisms of the Inquirer’s huge coverage of Barbaro — the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner who broke down in the Preakness — while giving short shrift to the murder of 406 living human beings in the City of Brotherly Love.

The Inquirer is actually a pretty decent paper — though I don’t go through it with a fine toothed comb, as our esteemed host does with The Los Angeles Times — but their editorial priorities are often thoroughly fouled up. And Mr Satullo is far from the worst columnist that they have!

Looks like this is another GroupThink Blog. Yep, I knew there’d be a link to LGF.
    — Meaning that it’s partisan . . . like every other political-discussion blog in existence.

I won’t be celebrating the Fourth.
    — More hot dogs for the rest of us.

I’m disgusted with this country, this administration, and with its citizens.
    — It isn’t just bad, it’s all bad, every bit of it. Liberal absolutism.

And yes, I can’t wait to leave.
    — And we all can’t wait for you to leave. There’s your “GroupThink”.

This is a sick, sick country with too many problems to list. Enjoy your delusional patriotic utopia.
    — What is delusional is to believe that there are any countries that are problem-free; you would know those as your Socialist, John Lennon’s “Imagine”, can’t-we-all-just-get-along, do-not-now-and-never-will-exist-in-real-life utopias.

Will the Illegal Immigrants be celebrating the Fourth with you?
    — Ironically, yes. No country is perfect, including wherever you or your ancestors came from and wherever you are going now.

The Constitution is in tatters and your leaders are Globalists.
    — The Constitution is strong, and what our leaders are is ‘not isolationists’.

How can you proclaim your National Allegiance when your leaders do not?
    — We aren’t automatons; and our leaders do proclaim their allegiance.

Their words do not match their actions.
    — Politicians are subject to human frailties just like any other person; Transparency International consistently ranks the US as one of the 20 least corrupt countries in the world (there are a total of 193 countries).

Whatever. Can’t wait to let the “door hit my ass” when I leave.
    — Door? How ’bout I take you to the Arizona-Mexico border and kick your ass through a hole in the fence?

Looking forward to your endless (Jew) wars throughout my lifetime.
There it is. How patient and disciplined of you to hold your anti-Semitic card until the last play.

  65. At least the Boston Globe is exposing Urkel’s thin resume as community organizer and state senator. All that money for public housing development pushed by Obama in Chicago and you see developers made out and yet the people are living in slums. Littlegreenfootballs has the story and pictures. The big shot and his baitch wife live in a mansion and are above the little people that kiss their asps.
Why wasn’t this loved-by-Levi/Harp buffoon ever properly vetted? But of course his admiring masses don’t mind being brownnosers and probably think it is merely fudge on their noses.

  66. Madmax,

My tenure in CT was the 80s working for Pitney Bowes and for Sperry.

Was Tiny Markle broadcasting on WICC back then? He was the only Liberal in talk radio worth listening to.

As to Levi, Satullo, and harpo, I’ve often wondered why they don’t leave if America is so bad for them? I mean, if they love to silence the opposition, then Zimbabwe is the place for them. Again, if they like confiscation of wealth, Zimbabwe is their nirvana. Also, if they love corrupt ballotbox stuffers, Robert Mugabe is their man. Why are they still here?

    PCD (d3e2f8)

  67. #66 PCD-
No clue about talk radio way back then. I didn’t listen to it at all.
Indeed, I imagine that Robert Mugabe should be a hero on the left in Hollywood. Would they even deign to make a movie showcasing his “benign” rule. I wonder what Jimmuh Carter’s stance is on Zimbabwe, but I suppose it lacks the zionist overtones he favors decrying.
Had an ex who met Idi Amin while in Peace Corps. Mugabe and Amin are not so different. Here’s a fantasy- those maroons you mention do go to Zimbabwe to work for Mugabe and end up in same desperate straights as the doc in The Last King of Scotland. Levi/Harp hanging by hooks through their breasts? Ouch.
What does it say about the patriotism on the left when they continue to adulate scum like Castro, Chavez, Imadamnutjob and even Che Guevera, whose visages O!bamaniacs have hanging about campaign offices?
