Hey, Nancy Pelosi! Infantilizing A Congresswoman Is No Way To Honor Any Woman On International Women’s Day!

Filed under: General — Dana @ 12:50 pm

[guest post by Dana]

It’s a bit jarring to see House Speaker Nancy Pelosi continue to be disrespectful to a sitting female member of Congress, as she once again denied Rep. Ilhan Omar full agency as an adult woman, and as an adult woman in full command of her thoughts, words, and deeds.

Instead, Pelosi continues to treat Omar as little more than a small child who is incapable of understanding what she is saying. If Omar is really that limited in understanding that words have meaning, should she really be a sitting representative in the U.S. Congress? Especially given the basic requirements of her job and sworn oath to support the U.S. Constitution, in all of its sheer depth and breadth? That’s an awful lot for any elected official to grapple with, let alone one who apparently doesn’t know what she is saying and what her words mean – even after having been informed on several occasions.

  1. Hello.

  2. “I don’t think our colleague is anti-Semitic. I think she has a different experience in the use of words, doesn’t understand that some of them are fraught with meaning, that she didn’t realize.”

What else can Nancy Pelosi say without either condoning what Ilahn Omar said, or condemning it?

No, I think the reason is, as I said in another thread, that they can only condemn hatred and prejudice where it doesn’t have a constituency.

House resolution 183 singled out things that did not have a constituency endorsing them.

To put it in somewhat stark language, it is easy to condemn Hitler, now that Hitler, and his movement, is dead. Many people weren’t so ready to condemn Naziism in 1939, and in the 1930’s, the stronger it got, the less they were. Lots of people were, but still not the same.

Where Jew haters are active, and can push back, things are not the same.

This is not just left wing bigotry and hatred. It applies even to things that Donald Trump says. Donald Trump, their chief political enemey, whom they are all campaigning against.

What things? When he speaks against illegal immigrants.

He’s going around saying outrageous lies about illegal immigrants. If they criticize something, they try to turn it into racism. (and usually don’t point out the alleged racist statements, because they’re not, or point out things other than what’s really the problem))

    What do I mean?

Look at this: Trump at CPAC:

And all the nonsense you hear about “the people that come in illegally are far better than the people we have” — it’s not true, folks. Okay? It’s false. It’s false propaganda. Right? One recent study from FAIR — F-A-I-R — found that illegal aliens are incarcerated at three times the rate of legal residents. Just ask the Angel Moms how good are there. Those great Angel Moms who were treated so badly — so badly. Incredible people. But the simple reality is that every crime committed by an illegal immigrant is a crime that should never have happened in the first place. The border crisis is also a heartbreaking humanitarian tragedy…

Now the fact of the matter is they are far better than the people they displace. Donald Trump, being formerly active in the New York State real estate market, knows that. And that last bit about humanitarian criss is really sneaky. He’s trying to imply it’s illegal immigrants killing American citizens, although he goes on in a different direction.

And then he’s got also this Angel Mom business, which if he targeted any other group of people other than illegal immigrants, it would be recognized as the worst form of bigotry. Not even true.

That is the moral equivalent of racism.

Not racism – but the moral equivalent. This distinction is important.

(Now I think he may be trying to make making a distinction between people who cross the border illegally and all other people from that country, but this is without any basis in fact.)

The Democrats won’t even take that on.

Anything along those lines must be called racism, if it is called anything, even though it’s not.

With Steve King, remember, they had to find a racist statement. All the things he said against the human category of illegal immigrants, they ignored. (Well there it was Republicans who acted, but only after Democrats criticized him. )

They can only condemn hatred where it does not have a constituency.

  6. I, like Nancy Pelosi, don’t think Omar is anti-Semitic. I mean, a Muslim hating Jews? Whoever heard of such a thing? That would be like a dog hating cats or a cat hating mice or a Red Sox fan hating Yankees. Highly improbable.

  8. That’s a very insightful argument, Sammy, but I think you are giving Pelosi & Company credit for being strategic thinkers when really this is mostly about a bunch of elderly white fuddy-duddies being absolutely cowed by the young minority members of their caucus. I think you are also somewhat overestimating Trump’s ability to play multi-dimensional chess with his immigration rhetoric; he says what he believes and his beliefs seem to reflect whomever has most recently had his ear on any given issue. But, as I said, your analysis is very insightful.

  13. She’s dialing it up to 11.

Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar ripped former President Barack Obama in an interview published Friday, belittling his “pretty face” and saying his agenda of hope and change was an illusion.

She cited the “caging of kids” at the Mexican border and the “droning of countries around the world” on Obama’s watch — and argued that he wasn’t much different from President Trump

“We can’t be only upset with Trump,” the freshman firebrand told Politico Magazine.

“His policies are bad, but many of the people who came before him also had really bad policies. They just were more polished than he was,” Omar said.

“And that’s not what we should be looking for anymore. We don’t want anybody to get away with murder because they are polished. We want to recognize the actual policies that are behind the pretty face and the smile.”

that he wasn’t much different from President Trump.

“We can’t be only upset with Trump. His policies are bad, but many of the people who came before him also had really bad policies,” the freshman firebrand told the outlet in a clear knock at the first African-American president. “{They just were more polished than he was.

  23. Thinking it over, I agree that Omar is not intentionally antiSemitic. She is a child of the Left….
The Left complains that DC is owned by the corporate interests. They include mainstream Democrats in that, including Hillary and Obama. Omar’s original comments about Obama are par for the course among Leftists.
To the Leftists, the “Israel lobby” is an instance of this, Omar was criticizing the mainstream of politics, not Jews, when she made her remarks. Of course, such a reading is true only if you ignore the genocidal program of Hamas, Palestinian insistence on violence, and all the other things which make support for Israel the moral thing to do…

That’s the problem with Pelosi’s treatment of Omar: By default, Pelosi has to pick her poison if she is going to continue to shield Omar from accusations of anti-Semitism: either she’s an imbecilic child who doesn’t understand what words mean, or she’s just an ignorant immigrant, or a WOC. This is how the left corners themselves.

  33. That is not Illinois law. The prosecutor is grandstanding. Illinois is a concurrent sentencing, one act-one crime state. There was one false reporting of one crime, battery. Maybe you can stretch it to two crimes because there were two assailants. That’s it. Even if the judge lets all counts go to the jury (doubtful), and even if the jury brings back sixteen guilty verdicts (doubtful), Smollett’s maximum custodial sentence (doubtful) will still be three years with day to day “good time” plus whatever the current “administrative good time” is, for an effective total of fifteen or sixteen months.

    nk (dbc370)

  34. For those who didn’t see Omar’s comments re Obama, here they are (from an interview with Politico):

As she saw it, the party ostensibly committed to progressive values had become complicit in perpetuating the status quo. Omar says the “hope and change” offered by Barack Obama was a mirage. Recalling the “caging of kids” at the U.S.-Mexico border and the “droning of countries around the world” on Obama’s watch, she argues that the Democratic president operated within the same fundamentally broken framework as his Republican successor.

“We can’t be only upset with Trump. … His policies are bad, but many of the people who came before him also had really bad policies. They just were more polished than he was,” Omar says. “And that’s not what we should be looking for anymore. We don’t want anybody to get away with murder because they are polished. We want to recognize the actual policies that are behind the pretty face and the smile.”

However, she is now claiming her words were distorted and mischaracterized. .

Exhibit A of how reporters distort words.

I’m an Obama fan! I was saying how Trump is different from Obama, and why we should focus on policy not politics.

This is why I always tape my interviews.

She included the audio of the interview with her explanation tweet. To my ear it backs up the written quote provided by Politico. What do you think?

  39. To my ear it backs up the written quote provided by Politico. What do you think?

The original quote says what Leftists have long said about Obama.
Her backtracking suggests that she has belatedly realized that what African-Americans think about a man they consider one of their own, and what Americans who are actually from Africa like herself, are two different things. And that while mainstream Democrats will merely nod and smile when you criticize Israel, they don’t like people who actually criticize Obama and/or the Clintons.

Tell me if I’m wrong, but the plain interpretation of your statement is that illegal immigrants are better than the people who belong here, who are a continuation of the American story their ancestors invested in, and who are, in fact, being negatively impacted by illegal immigration — in your own word, displaced.

My lovely wife has been drawing SS since she turned 62. When I was applying for my SS (and Mcare pt B) benefits the young man I was dealing with tells me “oh, since you were full retirement age when you turned 66 last September, your wife gets a retroactive amount… do you want that?” I said, “so it doesn’t affect anything on what we’ll be getting on a monthly basis (thinking what’s the angle here?)” He says no, it won’t. I say “well, I guess I’d be a fool not to want it”. So, I wake up this morning, check the bank balance as I normally do each Saturday, and there’s been a $5100 SS deposit, which would be for my wife, as mine won’t begin until late May. I think to myself, “gee… retired for not even 24 hours and I already love being a Democrat!”

  81. “Since she entered Congress earlier this year, freshman Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar has consistently made news with her anti-Semitism, which may yet force the Democratic Party into a corner. Less noticed—and apparently even less troubling to her party—is the hostility Omar shows in public statements about her adopted country. Omar was born in Somalia, which she fled with her family at age nine, during the country’s civil war. She spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya until the United States rescued her and her family in 1995. It’s not surprising that she has made her remarkable experience a centerpiece of her political campaigns and public life.

What is surprising is the extent to which her narrative consists of complaints about the intolerance, racism, inequity, and filth that she found when she came to the United States, and since. Gratitude, for the country and the people who saved and welcomed her family, is largely absent from her telling. Interviewed on the popular Pod Save America podcast, Omar explained that when her family was preparing for resettlement in America, they watched orientation videos “about the life that they are to expect once they arrive here . . . happy families, and dinner tables where there is an abundance of food, images of happy young children running off to their school buses . . . images of a country where people are happy and leading a life that is prosperous. You are really looking forward to life as you see it on that screen.”

Life in American was not like the images she saw in the welcome video, Omar insists. “When we landed,” she recalls, “I saw panhandlers on the side of the streets, there being trash everywhere, and graffiti on the side of the walls.” Omar asked her father why America fell so short of what she had been promised, and he told her to “hold on, we will get to our America.” Omar has still not arrived in the America she was promised, though she has now been elected to Congress. We continue to disappoint her. “The current reality that people live in . . . an America where you can’t access the justice system equally because you are born with a different race, or a different gender, or are born into a different class, that isn’t the America that I heard about, that isn’t the America that I watched.”

Omar told a similar story to CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, saying that she noticed “a disconnect between the ideals of America and the actual reality.” This is a constant theme. She did not expect, she has said, to “go to school with kids who were worried about food as much as I was worried about it in a refugee camp.”
America is not only as deprived as an East African refugee camp, the country is also filled with people who don’t recognize how lucky they are to admit people like Ilhan Omar. Unlike our violent and unpredictable natives, including the notorious “ISIS bride,” whom Omar makes a point of noting is “not an immigrant, but an American born to a family of diplomats,” immigrants like her “went through years of vetting and went through the process of becoming citizens. I mean we have been fingerprinted, tested, more than any American has ever been who’s born in this country.” Like many on the left, Omar believes that America’s purpose is to admit immigrants and make them feel welcome. To the extent that Americans “make room” for the next wave of immigrants, they fulfill the American dream; to the extent that they fail to be welcoming, they betray it.”

Very clearly, because we can all still listen to the audio here.

I can’t really – the audio is too low. Is there a way to make it louder.

She probably deleted her tweet because it was critical of Obama. Didn’t she say, echoing Republicans, that Obama did the same thing as Trump – he also put children in cages – he was only more polished than Trump.

Because they believe they have the right to be selective in the laws they follow. It’s arrogant and it’s sad.

eryy large portions of the population are like that. They buy marijuana. They hire household workers without paying taxes. They register their cars in other states to save on auto insurance. They register their children as living in different addresses, so as to get into better, or more convenient, schools. They import prescription medicines from Canada or Mexico.

  85. A lot of that sort of life choice Mr. F, happens in states that are victims of the SALT deduction removal and standard i/o deduction swap. I wonder how much additional money was wrested into federal coffers from the same taxpayers in 2018 vs. 2017.if the total was north of 1 B, I would have pled for that and fty 2019 to be for the wall fund.
Then beyond 2019 tax year get the border adjustment and remittance tax going and return to the status quo ante on federal personnel income taxes.
