Did AOC’s Chief of Staff Use a PAC to Funnel Illegal Contributions to Her?
Not sure if y’all followed the kerfuffle when conservative Luke Thompson questioned AOC about her boyfriend having a House email address. AOC herself snapped that it was a way for the boyfriend to monitor her calendar; all the spouses do it (though he’s not a spouse); and Thompson was briefly suspended from Twitter for “doxxing” AOC’s boyfriend with, um, publicly available information.
Anyway, that was a stupid controversy but it led to Thompson firing back with this Medium piece, which is worth your time.
The piece is complicated but (if I understand it correctly) the upshot is that AOC’s wealthy Chief of Staff Saikat Chakrabarti co-founded a PAC that provides campaign services to newbie politicians. The PAC also serves to fuzz up the source of campaign contributions. AOC used the services of the PAC, which subsequently hired AOC’s boyfriend as a “marketing consultant” despite his apparent relative lack of marketing experience, and paid him thousands. Thompson wonders if this was a way for Chakrabarti (using the PAC) to funnel money directly to AOC in excess of campaign finance contribution limits — especially given that she hired the PAC’s co-founder as her chief of staff once the campaign was over.
Swampy!
Might be worth further investigation. Of course, campaign finance laws don’t matter when Donald Trump violates them, but I bet we can care about them if AOC broke them!
AOC: Making America Care About Character Again!
[Cross-posted at The Jury Talks Back.]
First response (to snark): Trump’s “breaking” of campaign finance laws depends on some very conflicted issues, such as “is everything part of the campaign?” versus “is every dollar spent on behalf of a candidate a campaign donation?”.
Campaign funds spent on candidate’s wife’s clothes? Criminal! Not campaign related!
Outside funds spent on blackmail payoff? Criminal! Campaign related!
It’s really hard to know. I think the term of art is “unconstitutionally vague.”

I do agree with the notion that campaign violations are campaign violations, no matter how small the sum, and it’s especially bad when it appears to be an orchestrated attempt to launder funds, not to mention the real head-scratcher of where supposedly broke AOC was getting the money to operate her campaign if she wasn’t using credit cards. She originally got PR because of her surprise victory in the low turnout early primary (June – for federal races and Sept for all others, a new law will now combine them) over Congressman Joe Crowley (who has just now resigned as Queens Democratic leader in order to have things be more compatible with being a lobbyist. It was thought before that he might make atry for some New York State office.)
Joe Crowley was the fourth or so ranking Democrat in the House and widely thought to be possible replacement for Nancy Pelosi, given he was about 54.
Now maybe all the interest in her wasn’t entrely spontaneous and somebody promoted this in some way (as being more significant than it was)
Joe Crowley only got worried right at the end of the campaign, and maybe what he did then didn’t help.
He had had no real challenges for maybe a dozen years, and his district was both more Hispanic and more sympathetic to a Socialist than before (there were many well off Millenials who had voted for Bernie Sanders in the 2016 presiential primary who had moved into it.)
Alexandria Ocasio Cortez knocked on enough doors and had volunteers form the Democratic Socialists of America.

Depends on how long the Millennials think taxes are good for them.
SS is not in much trouble — the Gen X gap has been filled with legal immigrants, mostly, and assuming the Millennials ever get jobs, it will work itself out with a few nips and tucks.
Medicare, OTOH, is a problem. If they work within the system, some things are going to be disallowed (hip replacements), deductibles will go up and the supplements will carry some things now paid by Medicare. And it may become unavailable or stupidly expensive for the affluent (a wealth test).
Or maybe they just make it a fixed subsidy for private insurance. They’d better have the votes, though.

By his own account, senior Department of Justice (DOJ) official Bruce Ohr played an essential — and unorthodox — role, carrying politically tainted allegations of Donald Trump-Russia collusion to the FBI during the 2016 election.
First, it was unverified intelligence starting in July 2016 from Trump-hating former British spy Christopher Steele, the author of the infamous Russia dossier.
Next, it was sketchy intelligence starting in August 2016 from Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson, an opposition-research contractor who hired Steele and was paid to help Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign develop political dirt on Trump.
And now we learn, from testimony that is still being kept secret from the public, that Ohr admitted to Congress last year that he also took Russia information that his wife, Nellie, assembled against Trump on a computer drive and delivered that to the FBI in 2016 — a revelation that has raised fresh concerns in Congress about a possible conflict of interest.
Nellie Ohr worked for Fusion GPS and, for a time, worked on the same Clinton-financed Russian research project as Steele, according to the testimony.
DOJ ethics rules forbid department officials from working in cases where a spouse has a financial interest, a prohibition that Bruce Ohr said he knew about when he forwarded his wife’s evidence to the FBI.”

Earlier years are alsoi adjusted for inflation.
There’s another thing to say here. George W. Bush’s plan was based on the idea that stock market returns are higher.
But stock market returns, in the long run (20+ years say) reflect economic growth. The official projections for Social Security were based on a low rate of economic growth, and the projections for stock market returns were, ultimately based on a higher one!
Sammy Finkelman (102c75) — 2/21/2019 @ 12:53 pmI don’t know if the indexation in any way reflects that, but in earlier years (before the mid-1980s) the Social Security tax rate was lower than it is now. It seems to consider on;y earnings upon which contributions were based.

“Hey, let’s talk about the crazy aunt living in our attic” is not your usual conversation icebreaker.

mg (7e0e37) — 2/22/2019 @ 4:20 amWhen asked about Roe vs Wade, AOC says its the only way Mexicans can get across the border!
As a latino I cant tell you how much she embarrasses me,

AOC is fitting in nicely with the Swamp . She should be a multimillionaire thru Public Service in no time
WompWomp (493b9b) — 2/23/2019 @ 4:57 amAOC’s explanation for not having a local office was that the rent was too high, but the newly built office she’s getting should be more expensive. On the other hand, Crowley had two and maybe she will have only one.
Her constituents can’t reach her. (Before, I read that when they call atel number they were being referred to sen Kirstin Gillibrand’s offices)
She has an official home in Parkchester in the Bronx (her late father’s condominium) and both she and her boyfroend (since college) registered to vote from that address but the mail gets picked up once every few months. She visited New York four or five times since her swearing in but apparently never came there although she did hold a few events in her district.
Her bofornd is almost unpolitical – more interested in photography maybe.
Her chief of staff was the organizer of Brand New Congress – he backed 30 candidates only one – AOC got in – and now he’s her chief of staff.
Sammy Finkelman (102c75) — 2/24/2019 @ 1:31 pmAlexandria Ocasi-Cortez along with Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Presley were part of an audition for congressional seats put on by the Justice Democrats. Did you also know that the Justice Democrats endorsed 79 candidates in 2016 and that 26 of them won congressional seats? An AUDITION that seven people were chosen for and these are three of the people chosen to sew the agenda of Saikat Chakrabarti. Alexandria Ocasi-Cortez’s chief of staff Saikat Chakrabarti along with Zak Exley who are instructing AOC in what to say and who to attack wears the picture of Subhas Chandra Bose on his t-shirts in every video he makes, Subhas Chandra Bose is PRO VIOLENCE, ANTI COLONILIST SOCIALIST, who dreamed of a NAZI COMMUNIST GOVERNMENT, AND Saikat Chakrabarti is the person controlling both Alexandria Ocasi-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib. Zak Exley is an expert in Saul Alinsky style organizing. “Saikat Chakrabarti” or would it have been “Zak Exley” because we are certain AOC is not smart enough to come up with this her self.
