Palate Cleanser: Remembering Those Who Made History
[guest post by Dana]
I know we’ve had an open thread on the passing of Queen Elizabeth, but I just came across this and wanted to share it. I simply cannot tell you how much I love it:
“Never have the august duties which fall upon the British monarch been discharged with more devotion than in the brilliant opening to your Majesty’s reign.”—Churchill’s final toast as PM, to Queen Elizabeth II. He was the first of her 15 Prime Ministers. https://t.co/oLWfJukOO1 pic.twitter.com/ayFC1Q82R9

The history and significance of this moment and these two people was and still is, simply incredible.

Hello.
Dana (1225fc) — 9/12/2022 @ 6:42 pmDug out the old silent, Super 8 home movies last night on DVD to replay that my late father filmed at the Trouping of the Colour back in the day with a much younger Elizabeth on horseback reviewing her troops amidst a sea of bearskinned redcoats on parade.
Brought me to tears. Beautiful pageantry. The Churchill state funeral was before my time there but a neighbor was a member of the Household Calvary at the time and paraded for it- and regaled us with stories of the pomp and traditions around the time Eisenhower passed and the reverence and respect for Ike in Britain was almost on par with Churchill.
Elizabeth’s devotion to duty- and her Corgis will echo into the centuries ahead.
Now I must cleanse my palette of the BS from hypocrite Kasparov; the one time Soviet communist was an enemy of the very pair imaged and the system of government they represented.
DCSCA (df7022) — 9/12/2022 @ 7:03 pmChurchill thought that Soviet Communism should have been strangled in the crib circa 1920.
