Another Incumbent Falls

West Virginia Democrat Alan Mollohan has been defeated in the primary:

“Anti-incumbent sentiment is roiling both parties as another long-serving member was defeated in a primary Tuesday.

West Virginia Democratic primary voters opted not to nominate Rep. Alan Mollohan for a 15th term.

Mollohan’s loss is the first defeat for a House incumbent this cycle and comes days after Sen. Bob Bennett (R-Utah) was denied his party’s nomination for a fourth term at the GOP state party convention in Salt Lake City.

In West Virginia, Democrats nominated state Sen. Mike Oliverio, who claimed 56 percent of the vote to Mollohan’s 44 percent with 511 of 670 precincts reporting. The Associated Press called the race for Oliverio.”

Mollohan’s loss was variously attributed to his vote for ObamaCare and its abortion funding, earmarks, and allegations of corruption.

  1. Let the clean out begin. When I first started my now-defunct blog, one of my key wishes was to see the ouster of Dodd, McCain and Reid. I think I have a shot. All these other guys will just be the icing on the cake.

  2. That was weird. The comment just disappeard instead of showing it as posted by “YOU”.

  3. Does this mean that Mollohan’s corruption probe will now never be finished?

  4. I wonder if we’ll see lots of opinion journalists (e.g. David Brooks) going on about how this shows the extreme-left-wing is taking over the Democratic party.

  5. I think listening to David Brooks is something akin to listening to a car salesman trying to entice you to buy a Pontiac Aztec.

But, I get your point, Suboai. It will not happen.

  6. I gotta know if BHO campaigned for this incumbent. From the electoral results, it sounds like he did.

(Sorry for borrowing your “t”, Subotai.)

  7. Why is this such a great friggin’ deal?

The Dems just saved themselves a vulnerable seat. Without the incumbent to rail against, the Republican ain’t gonna win a seat in a solidly Democratic district.

  8. Ed – The article says McCain carried the district with 57% in 2008. Doesn’t sound that solid Dem.

I thought this was the definition of a Democrat?

  10. Keep in mind them boys from West Virginia is Americans first, political party affiliation comes in somewhere further on down the list, between say other important issues like favorite NASCAR driver and whether to put an egg on your chicken fried steak.

  11. rich Galen sez:

Mollohan was not one of those Members of Congress who has squeaked by in election after election until he finally lost a close one. In 2008 – two years ago – he won by the razor thin margin of 187,734 to … 130. That’s 99.93 percent of the vote.

  12. #7, tell that to Scott Brown.

  13. On more serious note, here is Kagan on free speech.

Whether a given category of speech enjoys First Amendment protection depends upon a categorical balancing of the value of the speech against its societal costs.

In short, she does not believe in free speech. Any liberal commenters want to weigh in on this?

  14. Duh! Wrong thread.

  15. Hey, I’m from Ohio, not West Virginia; and I know that an egg belongs on chicken fried steak. Then add ketchup.

  16. Ketchup is a vegetable.

  17. “In short, she does not believe in free speech. Any liberal commenters want to weigh in on this?”

She’s referring to the categorical test used to uphold bans on things like child pornography and obscenity. Those things do not get first amendment protection, as a result of the balancing of the value of the speech against its societal costs.

  18. #15, BarSinister, I like mine with lots of gravy spread thick both under and over the CFS, then an egg sunny side up on top, served with fries and sliced tomatoes, biscuits on the side, along with a big draft beer.

Best CFS I ever had, described above, was at the 50’s Cafe at the Bomber Bar, upstairs in Reno’s Nevada Club back in the early ’90s. It’s gone now, only the memory remains. BTW, the best burger in Reno was the Awful Awful (Awful Big and Awful Good) available 24/7 at the Golden Nugget on Virginia.
