ClimateGate’s Dr. Phil Jones

Filed under: Environment — DRJ @ 4:00 pm

[Guest post by DRJ]

Clark Baker notes the Office of Medical and Scientific Justice only needs one sentence to raise doubts about Dr. Phil Jones’ contributions to global warming research:

“OMSJ and The Daily Mail report that the academic at the centre of the ‘Climategate’ affair, whose raw data is crucial to the theory of climate change, has admitted that he has trouble ‘keeping track’ of the information.”

The second sentence is almost as bad for Dr. Jones.

  4. The priests of Apollo at Delphi were very good at documenting the prophecies of the Oracle. They provided copies of them to other people, too. Hundreds of them survive to this day, and so we know more about ancient prophecies than we do about all that scientific research we paid millions of dollars for. I think Apollo is trying to tell us something.

  5. So the dog ate Phil Jones homework, huh?

Not only is Phil the Shill a piss-poor scientist, but he’s full of more excuses than a pregnant nun. Epic fail.

    That is truly offensive!

This is how Robert Gallo and Anthony Fauci convinced Americans that HIV was the cause of AIDS.

Does Clark Baker dispute that HIV is the cause of AIDS? Is there serious doubt about this?

  8. This entire global warming thing is an example of modern elitists trying to take over control of the world by creating a crisis. Gore became their spokesman but is now hiding and he would never debate anyone. His own credentials are extremely poor as he flunked Divinity school.

The entire enterprise became an exercise in mass hysteria but only among the elites. The common people never really believed this, not through ignorance but through a sense that the earth was just too big a system to be altered by man.

There is now a very weak reaction from the press, the Washington Post published a weak article this morning.

But recent revelations about flaws in that seminal report, ranging from typos in key dates to sloppy sourcing , are undermining confidence not only in the panel’s work but also in projections about climate change. Scientists who have pointed out problems in the report say the panel’s methods and mistakes — including admitting Saturday that it had overstated how much of the Netherlands was below sea level — give doubters an opening.

It wasn’t the first one. There is still a scientific consensus that humans are causing climate change. But in the past year, a cache of stolen e-mails, revealing that prominent climate scientists sought to prevent the publication of works by their detractors, has sullied their image as impartial academics.

This is the first crack in the wall of silence that has surrounded this topic in the US media while the British press has savaged the culprits. Even the left wing Guardian is far ahead of US newspapers in covering the scandal.

The left in the US is firmly in the church of global warming and Martin Luther himself will have to rise again to pound sense in their heads. Why is the left so determined ? Because this was always a club to beat capitalism. It also appealed to their vanity that the poor dumb Republicans didn’t understand science. Thousands of journalism majors and sociology majors lorded it over the right, to the point of writing about the Republican war on science.

Last spring, a magazine asked me to look into a whistleblower case involving a United States Fish and Wildlife Service biologist named Andy Eller. Eller, a veteran of 18 years with the service, was fired after he publicly charged it with failing to protect the Florida panther from voracious development. One of the first species listed under the Endangered Species Act, the panther haunts southwest Florida’s forests, which builders are transforming into gated golf communities. After several weeks of interviews, I wrote an article that called the service’s treatment of Eller “shameful” – and emblematic of the Bush administration’s treatment of scientists who interfere with its probusiness agenda.

There you have it. Evil businessmen don’t love panthers. THat was a book review.

This episode makes me more sympathetic than I might otherwise have been to “The Republican War on Science” by the journalist Chris Mooney. As the title indicates, Mooney’s book is a diatribe, from start to finish. The prose is often clunky and clichéd, and it suffers from smug, preaching-to-the-choir self-righteousness. But Mooney deserves a hearing in spite of these flaws, because he addresses a vitally important topic and gets it basically right.

Yup, an anti-Republican book can be a diatribe but gets it right. The left will be very reluctant to give up on AGW.

  10. Now that Phil Jones is admitting several of the key points that AGW skeptics have been highlighting for years, when will the MSM apologize to the skeptics for their blind repetition of the BS and ad hominem garbage supplied by AGW adherents?

When will NASA apologize for Gavin Schmidt’s sneering dishonesty on the public’s dime?

In answer to your MSM question…..I prowled ABC, CBS, MSNBC & CNN this evening, and they don’t even acknowledge there is a Phil Jones, let alone that he ever spoke.

  13. In his interview with the BBC, Jones flat out states he believes the climate is warming. He also admits that he isn’t totally convinced it’s caused by humans but is definitely leaning that way based on the evidence.

You wouldn’t be twisting his words at all (like AoS is), would you?

Andrew Light, Ph.D., is a Senior Fellow at American Progress specializing in climate, energy, and science policy. He coordinates American Progress’s participation in the Global Climate Network, focusing on international climate change policy and the future of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. He is also director of the Center for Global Ethics at George Mason University.

  16. It reminds me of the Sandy Berger affair a few years ago. You’ll recall that ‘Berglar’ stuffed top secret documents down his socks and wandered out of the National Archive. His former boss, Bill Clinton, laughed it off and put it down to Berger’s famous ‘sloppiness. Every talking head in the drive-by media latched onto the ‘sloppiness’ meme.
Berger was Clinton’s National Security Advisor! Sloppiness is not an option in that critical role.
Now here we have Phil Jones; another man with a very important role… a role that cannot afford sloppiness.
Berger and Jones are only sloppy when it comes to honesty and integrity.

I would agree, without reading the links at the link.

There is some issue as to whether Gallo overstated his findings in order to “beat others to the punch”, and there have been doubts raised (early on) by some with PhD’s whether HIV causes AIDS or not, but the similarities stop there.

HIV infection went from an almost uniformly fatal illness (given enough time) to one that is quite treatable and controlled all based on science with the premise that HIV causes AIDS. That’s thousands and thousands of specific experiments testing some aspect of the HIV causes AIDS theory that have given reproducible results consisting with the theory. This is far different from the “whatever experience shows, Global Climate Change can be shown to be consistent”.

As to what Baker believes, I’ll pass on ferreting that out.
