  1. So, does he get REAL jail time, among the general populace, or does he get a good-time house or segregation as a professional courtesy?

  2. The judge sounds a little like a jerk, to me.

  3. Will the former cops welcome him in the special unit for cops behind bars?

  4. I don’t know Mr. Carona from Adam, but to be acquitted of the corruption charges and to be convicted of “witness-tampering”, whatever that means, coupled with the judge’s injudicial tirade, really troubles me.

  6. Carona’s trial was peppered with accounts of influence peddling within his administration. Witnesses talked about bribes handed over in cash-stuffed envelopes, hidden cameras in the sheriff’s department and reserve badges given to supporters and those with political connections.

The testimony also exposed the raw details of his relationship with a longtime mistress, including tales of a love nest, Las Vegas getaways and secret bank accounts.

The jury acquitted Carona on charges that he misused his office to enrich himself and his associates in pursuit of hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, bribes and gifts such as vacations, World Series tickets and Montblanc pens.

During interviews after the trial, jurors said that they believed Carona had accepted cash and gifts, but that the statute of limitations prevented them from considering many of the alleged acts.

Since the acquittal seemed based merely on statue of limitations gimmickry [yes, I realize the ‘house’ attorneys here will howl over that], any sympathy for this particularly corrupt police honcho just vaporized after seeing his acts spelled out.

  8. Given that the LA Times is extremely biased and the story originated in Orange County, perhaps a link to The Register would be more appropriate.

  9. Unless it’s an OpEd by Steven Greenhunt, who probably is disappointed that Carona wasn’t Drawn & Quartered.

  10. OC Register link, tallyho.

Carona still sounds like a complete … jerk. Ah well, he’s got a five-and-a-half year sentence of which he’ll have to actually do about four years seven or eight months. Unless CA runs out of the money to keep him in durance vile.

  11. I’m stunned tha the Times article never mentioned Carona’s party affiliation. Usually, when a Republican gets nailed, it’s right in the first sentence. “Name-that-party” is more common with Democrats.

  12. Kevin, that was a Federal District Court trial.
Carona will probably go to the Fed lock-up at Lompoc.

  13. After all the fawning articles of the brilliance of the prosecutors – the result is they failed miserably. Now hopefully the parking around the Federal Bldg in Santa Ana will get better…..

  14. Mike Corona, as ex-Sheriff – Coroner, is yet to be
indicted for the Cover-up of the Murder of Andrea Nelson, 20, in
Jan. 2003…. What Are the Federal Prosecutors waiting for?
Corona to die of old age?
