12 Dead in Shooting at Newspaper That Depicted Prophet Mohammed

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:20 am

There has been a mass shooting at a Paris satirical newspaper known for publishing cartoons containing comic and derogatory depictions of the prophet Mohammed. The gunmen reportedly went from room to room asking for employees by name, and famous cartoonists are among the 12 people killed. The terrorists yelled “God is great” and “we have avenged the prophet!” in Arabic upon leaving.

Even the L.A. Times, which is prone to declaring the motives of Islamic extremists a “mystery,” can’t seem to pronounce itself baffled by the motive here.

I guess the answer depends on whether this was the work of amateurs or professionals, and if some third party, not present, especially if not even in France, underwrote their expenses or not.

Like what they decided about Benghazi, though, it is a “terrorist act” regardless.

  12. Josh Earnest and his boss have a very tenuous grasp on reality. The decisive issue here was apparently whether any of the gunmen were once employed by the magazine, despite Earnest’s admission that this was an attack on the fundamental principles of modern society. This is akin to the appeasers prior to WWII who excused Hitler for invading his neighbors since he was just reuniting German enclaves with the mother country. Putin must take heart at this insanity. Can there be any doubt that Obola would blink for at least a day or two if Russia invaded a Baltic State in order to “repatriate Russian minorities.”

    Did they really say that?

They weren’t bothered by the claims that an cyber-attacker at SONY used to work for SONY.

I suppose you can say you can never trust the accuracy of early reports, but probably actually they were waiting for the CIA or FBI or somebody to definitively say it was terrorism, like they used to wait for the CIA to confirm that a voice on a tape was that of Osama Usama bin Laden, and still do for Zawahiri.

This is akin to the appeasers prior to WWII who excused Hitler for invading his neighbors since he was just reuniting German enclaves with the mother country.

Except they were never part of Germany – they were part of Austria.

  15. The attackers in got away, and two policemen were killed.

Now in the Bronx, there was a robbery, and five plainclothes policemen responded. These were pretty professional robbers, but not like this. One shot the other while aiming at police, and the bot escaped. The one who was shot knew what hospital to go to. But they both got arrested. They have no s.

They have had at least 3 or 4 killings in the past few months wherein the perpetrator has yelled “God is good” before killing innocent civilians and the French officials continually refer to these as “mentally ill”, with no mention of radical Islam at all.

The only kind of journalist that Putz knows are the ones that lick his balls, and any attack on his coterie of enablers/propagandists would be serious business.
If, OTOH, journalists were practicing their craft in a responsible, professional manner, he wouldn’t much care if a couple of them got knocked off, as that would be fewer he would have to deal with.

  46. According to this report, elissa, there are some Americans doing something. although response it’s loosely , if at all, organized:

“Best response to #CharlieHebdo attack — other than catching and punishing killers — is to escalate blasphemous satire,” Weisberg tweeted.

The Committee to Protect Journalists issued a statement strongly condemning the attack.

Robert Mahoney, the Committee’s deputy director, called on journalists to “stand together to send the message that such murderous attempts to silence us will not stand.”

Conservative radio host Larry O’Connor changed his Twitter avatar to a 2011 Charlie Hebdo cover that featured a depiction of the Prophet Mohammed, a serious taboo within Islam that has incited protests in the past. On the day Charlie Hebdo was slated to run that particular cover more than three years ago, its offices caught fire.

The Daily Beast published a slide show of some of Charlie Hebdo’s most provocative covers, with the 2011 Mohammed image posted front-and-center.

For Josh Greenman, opinion editor at the New York Daily News, Wednesday’s carnage in Paris had implications in the United States.

“If you’ve ever laughed at The Onion or The Daily Show, this is an attack on you,” Greenman said on Twitter.

Julian Assange’s suggested response: “[the] world must now avenge Charlie Hebdo by swiftly republishing all their cartoons.”

  56. If you look on Twitter, the great Neil Gaiman wrote:

“..How important are free speech and satire? Important enough that people will murder others to silence they kind of speech they do not like..”

But note that some people actually started arguing with him. You see, some speech is more equal than others.

Yes, a little after posting that I thought about Putin, too. He does have a record of sponsoring Chechen terrorism. He’s devious like that. His greatest secret, for which he killed someone with polonium, is that he was behind a 1999 bombing on Moscow.

    http://www.nybooks.com/articles/archives/2012/nov/22/finally-we-know-about-moscow-bombings/

Now, if this is the case here, the rather blockheaded idea would have been to help the Syrian government of Bashar Assad. The bombings would be blamed on ISIS, and used to demonstrate how dangerous ISIS was. If this is the case, it was probably the work of several countries: Syria, Iran and Russia. There are known to be pro-Syrian government hackers – the “Syrian electronic army” but there is no expertise in Syria. Of course ISIS does have some cyber sills, but that’s mostly in writing web pages and getting things out.

The Islamabad police on Tuesday rearrested a militant commander accused of masterminding the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, just a day after a high court said he could post bail in that case. ..

… The latest twist showed the pressure the Pakistani government is under to keep Mr. Lakhvi behind bars because of diplomatic protests by India and concerns expressed by the United States.

“It seems to be a case of damage limitation,” said Cyril Almeida, an editor at the newspaper Dawn. “The Lakhvi bail caused disbelief in many capitals in the world.”

He added, “Within Pakistan, it exposed that perhaps a dual system is still in place, one for the bad terrorists and another for the good pro-Kashmir, anti-India militants.”

23.10 Unconfirmed reports that two suspects have been arrested and a third killed Other French media say operation is imminent with French police surrounding a block of flats, surrounded by a crowd of onlookers.

23.45 Increasing confusion over what is happening in Reims, with police seen leaving the apartment block. iTele, a French news station, says that police were not carrying out a full scale assault on the building, but searching the scene for DNA samples. NBC, in America, however citing “two senior US counter terrorism officials” says two suspects have been arrested and a third killed.

01.25 AFP and French broadcaster, iTele are both reporting that the youngest of the suspects, Hamyd Mourad, has surrendered to the police.

    Sammy Finkelman (6b5229)

  69. Update: That report that one killer was killed appears to be wrong. Neither of the two brothers was located. So therefore what was going on in Reims appears too have been an attempt by the police to confirm the identity of the perpetrators That is, there was some DNA left at the scene (which maybe they hope or know came from the perpetrators) and the two brothers were known or suspected to have been there, or lived there, so if they can get a match they can assume maybe that they have DNA from the brothers, and then have something to compare.
