Quotable Pete Buttigieg

Filed under: Politics — DRJ @ 3:29 pm

[From DRJ]

Axios InterviewPete Buttigieg says it’s “almost certain” we’ve had gay presidents:

“Axios on HBO:” “You believe that we’ve had a gay commander-in-chief?”

Pete Buttigieg: “I mean, statistically, it’s almost certain.”

“Axios on HBO:” “In your reading of history, do you believe you know who they were?”

Pete Buttigieg: “My gaydar even doesn’t work that well in the present, let alone retroactively. But one can only assume that’s the case.”

  1. If politics in the age of Trump is about getting attention, Trump may have a competitor.

  2. James Buchanan was a life-long bachelor and would seen a good candidate. Not that this would help Pete any. No President has ever wanted to compare himself to Buchanan.

  3. What took him so long? Buttigieg. To come out with it. That’s fundamental GLAAD cant: “Everybody is homosexual.”

aphrael suggested Buchanan in the other thread. In contradiction to the Log Cabin Republicans who have been saying Lincoln for twenty years. My money is on Obama.

  5. By my count, three Presidents of the post-World War II era appear to be at least somewhat sexually depraved, so though they might not actually be gay it wouldn’t surprise me if at least one of them had a same-sex encounter at some point in his life.

Though nk chooses a good candidate too. That perfect crease in his pants did seem to drive some men wild.

  10. > No President has ever wanted to compare himself to Buchanan.

For good reason; Buchanan was a disaster, and is great proof of the proposition that a fantastic resume isn’t everything.

  11. > aphrael suggested Buchanan in the other thread

to be clear, i was responding to someone who was saying “i don’t know why they’d pick Buchanan” or something to that effect, and I was trying to explain what the reasoning is.

    aphrael (3f0569)

  12. Sorry, aphrael. It was something narciso linked.

  13. It amuses me to think that Trump might actually lose to one of these…characters the Dems are fielding.

  14. It saddens me that we turned Indochina into an abattoir for a dozen years trying to impose this form of government on them.

  15. 15. Even worse, our own boys died needlessly along with our so-called allies.

  16. Yes if south Vietnam had turned out like South Korea, and they would have turned to industry was so much worse.

    Narciso (55c8b7)

  17. To be fair, Vietnam didnt have much industry or personnel like the head of Hyundai. To be frank from everything I’ve read I dont think they had a (redacted) clue what to do with vietnam,

  18. Frankly I cant tell what the final objective in Iraq or Afghanistan is, anybody tell me.

  20. Well, we know its not Trump, JFK, or FDR. Jefferson Davis had quite a man-crush on Judah Benjamin, but that’s a different Presidency.

TR thought “Men like that shot themselves”. What about Clinton? Didn’t Hillary wear the pants in that family?

    rcocean (1a839e)

  21. Pete’s just doing the ol’ “There must a Gay in there somewhere” but its usually applied to good looking athletes, artists, leading men, and Singers.

    rcocean (1a839e)

  22. No, we definitely do not know that about Trump. If I had to do the exacta, I’d bet on Obama to come in first and Trump to place. I do give Trump credit for struggling to come to terms with his latent heterosexuality.

    nk (dbc370)

  23. “I mean, statistically, it’s almost certain.”

Pretty sure this isn’t how statistics work.

According to this methodology, a couple presidents were probably Asian.

  24. Well, we know its not Trump, JFK, or FDR.

I doubt very much that JFK was gay, but it wouldn’t surprise me in the least to hear that he had at some point had a same-sex experience. As time goes on, we learn more and more of his voracious appetite and his recklessness in pursing it, so I could see him getting caught up in some sort of multi-person encounter and engaging in behavior he otherwise would have avoided.

I am less likely to think the same about Bill Clinton, but I wouldn’t totally rule it out either. My image of Clinton was always someone who wasn’t super popular with girls until he attained political power, and he therefore tried to make up for lost time after that. I don’t see him engaging in the same kind of wild antics in his youth that Kennedy probably did.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  25. Nah, I foreclose Bill Clinton almost absolutely. He passes the Joseph Wambaugh test for heterosexuality, as enunciated in The Choir Boys, with flying colors: Nobody who loves pu**y so much that he would sleep with the likes of women Clinton slept with, or tried to sleep with, could possibly be gay.

    nk (dbc370)

  26. heh. true enough assessment. Clinton was probably always good w the ladies. Some women just fall for the greasy charmers and/or abusers. Some men are like that too. It’s human nature to like what’s bad for us.

  27. Who here subscribes to the Chester A. Arthur instead of Barack Obama theory? But that’s using the same simple eye test as is used with Babe Ruth.

  28. Clinton was probably always good w the ladies.

You think so? I confess that I haven’t read any of the biographies of him — Maraniss or any of the others — but I always pictured him as the guy who annoyed all of the girls in high school because he spent his time sucking up to the teachers. My theory is that the reason he was so big on chasing tail as an adult is because he had been shunned by the girls in his younger days. I know that there is some crazy woman out there who tells kind of outlandish stories about being Bubba’s high school girlfriend and then paramour for a number of years, but seeing as there don’t seem to be any pictures of them together at dances or in school or anything I am finding it hard to believe.

    JVW (54fd0b)

  29. “ My theory is that the reason he was so big on chasing tail as an adult is because…..”

  30. @28
When I lived in Arkansas while Bubba was governor …. I remember him saying that all the attention he got as a politician, “when you’ve been the kid in husky boy jeans, it’s overwhelming”

so I don’t think Clinton was always good with the ladies. He was an overweight band nerd in his high school days who played the saxophone; not exactly a chick magnet
