Your Video Zen of the Day: I Can Beat You With One Arm Tied Behind My Back (or Just Plain Missing)

[Guest post by Aaron Worthing; if you have tips, please send them here.]

I would post this video directly but something in word press positively impairs my ability to post video.  But this is a very nice, very awesome video clip of a young man named Jay Flemming who shows you that you should never underestimate the handicapped.  “This summer he competed in the 9-10 year old 25 meter butterfly event at the Nashville City Swim Meet.”  He only has one arm.  And he beats a bunch of kids with two arms.

When it comes to the human spirit, never say never.

  4. Visit SayUncle http://www.saysuncle.com/ for videos of an armless man shooting and reloading a Government .45 with his feet. Might need to scroll down a bit.

  5. Was it wrong to laugh at feets’ comment? I did.

The others didn’t let him win which IMO at his age was good. How I wish I could be there in 10 or 20 years to see just exactly how (I hope) spectactularly successful this young man is going to be in life. Unlike people who think like this. Good good good for him.

  7. I attended a Renaissance Fair outside Richmond VA last year, during which they had a greyhound race. All the dogs were race rescues that otherwise played the roles of lapdogs for the costumed nobility. They clearly loved to race, even though the “track” was just a 50-75 meters straight shot through a meadow.

The winner was a cancer survivor with only one foreleg.

Apparently, from the talk of the folk there, they had one “race” each day and the three-legged dog always won.

Let me guess, his name was “lucky.”

  11. Aaron –

Actually, the dog was a bitch and her name was something like robyn or gull. I remember the kind of name because the mic’ed announcer began the race with the words:

“She can’t walk well but, when the bell sounds, you will see her fly.”

  12. It’s an interesting story, and I hate to be the one to piss in peoples cornflakes, but I don’t know what stroke the lad was doing, but it wasn’t a butterfly stroke. It looked like a modified crawl to me. The butterfly is a very difficult exhausting stroke, and I don’t know that anyone would choose it for speed or distance if they could use another stroke instead, such as a crawl. Perhaps it would be best if he confined himself to freestyle competitions.

Anyone else in the competition who used a stroke that was obviously not a butterfly stroke would have been disqualified. I’m not sure that the organizers are doing the boy any favors by teaching him that because of his disability, he need not comply with the same rules that apply to everyone one else.
