TMZ: Tiger’s Wife Caused Those Facial Lacerations

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 12:06 am

If this is true, it would explain what was meant by that cryptic phrase in earlier reports about charges still pending:

Tiger Woods did not suffer facial lacerations from a car accident. They were inflicted by his wife, Elin Nordegren — according to a conversation Woods had Friday after the accident. . . .

We’re told he said his wife had confronted him about reports that he was seeing another woman. The argument got heated and, according to our source, she scratched his face up. We’re told it was then Woods beat a hasty retreat for his SUV — but according to our source, Woods says his wife followed behind with a golf club. As Tiger drove away, she struck the vehicle several times with the club.

Hmmmmmmmm.

UPDATE: For a totally unsubstantiated possible reason that Tiger might have gotten whacked with a club by his wife (picture here), read this (background pictures here).

  1. I just back from the grocery store where, lo and behold, one of the headlines on Star Mag was the fact (well, maybe not a proven fact yet) that Tiger has been messing around with some brunette. What ever happened to discreet behavior in this country?

So the guy’s not happy with the wife that he has?

I’m not surprised that Tiger is not happy trying to love a violent abuser like her. Not shooting her in self defense now could very well cost him and his loved ones their lives down the road. She should be locked up and then court ordered to stay away from the rest of the family.

He’s part Chinese which, at first blush, made his story that he could not pull out of his own driveway believable.

And when I told my wife the first version of the story — his wife smashing the rear window where she still could not reach a door lock, “in order to rescue him” — my wife asked, “Is she blonde?”

Ok, we’re both totally ashamed of ourselves.

This reminds me of the time when Phil Jackson asked Jordan and Ron Harper to have a little sit – down with Kobe, way back when he first started with the Lakers. Both senior players emphatically told Kobe that regardless of how he felt about his girlfriend at the time, do not marry her, you’re much too young, there are far too many temptations on the road, etc. Kobe never listened to them, and look what happened. Not the same situation by any means, but…

My personal feelings are that Tiger is kind of a prick, but he’s also an extremely hard worker, one of the most famous athletes in the world, has a yacht called PRIVACY, and he’s going to cheat on his wife with an already-established publicity hound skank (cf. David Boreanaz)? Something doesn’t add up.

  35. All I know is Tiger Woods has led a charmed life. Imagine work (ie, a way to make a living) is going out and playing a game that truly is more hobby or recreation than a job, and getting paid big bucks to do that. And undoubtedly also having easy access — as is true of most famous, wealthy male celebrities — to any number of hot-looking women, including his wife.

Only downside is a sense of time, and the already brief span of an average human’s life, must be zipping by even faster for folks like Woods.

    Dana (e9ba20)

  44. A side point:

ABC’s 20/20 did a story last night on the weirdos who say they are vampires. I watched only to see if I could detect an knowing eye-roll from reporter John Quinones (he either pulled it off or edited it out). But if a real-life bloodsucker exists in this world, it’s gotta be Harvey Levin, the grinning, giggling human slimebucket who operates TMZ.com and hosts the daily show TMZ.

If you’ve ever watched the show (I don’t, but have seen parts) it’s disgusting: He corrals his small army of paparazzi and they recount their recent encounters with celebs they stalk, shouting provocative questions at them. If the stalkees refuse to play along, and go about their business without acknowledging them, the photogs question their intelligence, moral character, or star power (forgetting for the moment they are relevant enough to be harassed), and mock their appearance. Levin mugs his way through the show, making funny faces as his camera-wielding terrorizers do their best Joan Rivers.

Worst of all is that Levin is in the checkbook (ahem) journalism business: If you’ve got dirt, he’ll pay for it, regardless of the motive of the muck merchant. I’m flipping between football games as I type, including one with wear-my-faith-on-my-sleeve Florida QB Tim Tebow. People who can’t stand hearing about his seemingly deep dedication to his mission (combined with his mastery of the college game) are trying to find a chink in his armor to broadcast to the world. Someone somewhere – maybe not Levin, but perhaps one of his clones in the sports world – would pay handsomely for a female’s first-hand account of the pious Tebow rounding third and heading for home, to mix sports metaphors. Why? Because taking down Tebow a notch makes some people feel better about themselves – “You’re not so perfect yourself! Nyaaah!”

(This is not to say I am a Tebowmaniac. I think too much is made of his faith, but I don’t hate him for it. On top of that, I am in favor of the demolishing of the BCS, and that will only happen if powerhouses like Florida lose to smaller schools.)

I am not a star-crossed guy who thinks performers are better than the average Joe or Jane, but one thing that is true most of the time is that hard work is involved in getting to the top (even, if you’re, say, Britney Spears, and 80% of what you do is utter crap — she worked HARD to work it down to 80%). Tiger Woods may be making hundreds of millions from a leisure time activity, but he was only able to do that by dedicating himself to being the best in the world at it. Whatever it is that is done, being the best doesn’t happen by accident. Don’t act like this is what he has coming to him for “living a charmed life.”

EVERYBODY has secrets — presuming for the sake of argument the rumors are true, Woods may yet pay dearly for his, both in terms of his reputation and his bank account (prenup, anyone?). But I hate to see Levin and his Nikon-clutching parasites trading on others’ misery when the stakes are so trivial.

    L.N. Smithee (b4c1f0)

  45. “I don’t recall there being any kind of history that his wife is any sort of violent abuser.”

As anti-domestic violence professionals often remind us, abusers (and their victims, in this case Tiger) are expert at hiding episodes of violence. The very fact that his controlling wife felt free to attack him in public as he tried to flee her abuse is just more evidence that she is a serial abuser. Does he have to die before he is considered a victim?

What is more than disappointing is that so many here seem to buy the notion that a man has a right to beat his wife unconcious if she is, or if he merely thinks that she is, cheating on him. Several women have posted along those lines, saving their sympathy for the abuser and implying, if not stating that “she had it coming to her” for being unfaithful.

(Of course, my previous paragraph substitutes man for wife etc. so that the hypocrisy is more tasty.)

But for those pro-wife beating women who mourn for the beater, because she has children, (Tiger somehow doesn’t, I guess) thanks for sharing! Back to the stone age, girls!

“Not defending Tiger or condemning Elin either, I’m just sayin is all.”

Yes, yes… wouldn’t want to be seen as defending the victim or condemning the abuser, not if you are a compliant sap who would sell his soul to get laid (or whatever reason some “men” sell out male victims).

    Mike Jackson (a7da41)

  46. No one here is defending or applauding abuse by any party, Mike Jackson. And if he’s abused, Tiger should do the same thing any abused person should do — take his children and get out … and if possible try to work things out.

    nk (df76d4)

  57. Mike Jackson is the one making light of abuse. By making ridiculous accusations, he cheapens the issue. He has political disagreements, and thinks it’s cute to troll in this dumb fashion. It’s a lot like calling someone racist for talking about Affirmative Action. It cheapens to real acts of abuse.

No doubt, what Tiger’s wife did was abuse, and no doubt, a lot of people would take it far more seriously if the sexes were reversed. It’s a serious problem, and Mike Jackson doesn’t understand or even care. I hope whatever sick problem Mike Jackson has can be solved… it’s the holidays, and that brings out the worst in some folks.

That’s right, Dustin. The guy pointing out the hypocrisy is the one who doesn’t care about the hypocrisy and double standards. Very good.

    Mike Jackson (a7da41)

  61. nk doesn’t have to agree with me. I’m not going to say he beats his wife, MJ. That would be taking abuse less than seriously. He’s entitled to speculate that Tiger married a trophy wife, if that’s his opinion. It’s ugly, but the reality is that these people make millions by putting their private lives out there like this. That’s the deal they made.

His wife is an idiot… I wouldn’t marry someone like that. A lot of abuse victims should have done a better job selecting their partners. I don’t like to point that out, but I ‘m not going to accuse those that do of being wife beaters… that’s just how I roll, dog.

    Dustin (cf255c)

  62. Dustin,

I don’t speculate that Tiger married a trophy wife. I speculate that there are two people who love each other, with children they love and need to raise, who did something stupid and kind of funny (to disinterested and kind of cruel observers) one late night.

If she cut his face up, though, that’s crossing a line. I don’t really care too much about smacking the car (maybe I do, with him inside, but as a rule, not really). But cutting his face? That’s abuse, and she should spend some time in jail.

Also, should I wax it? I have the honda all figured out — an eyesplice with a rawhide whipping and rawhide burner — but what about the rope body?

    nk (df76d4)

  70. Consider the situation, it’s Thanksgiving, two-timers always get caught at holidays. No one can be at two places at once, you can’t be playing patty-cake with your latest squeeze and be home with the wife and kids for Thanksgiving.

Rumors have been circulating, Woods could duck and dodge for a while, but not forever. Push always comes to shove during big national holidays. Then, excuses don’t work, you have to show up, and you can’t leave early.

The other woman usually gets left alone, has a few too many glasses of wine, gets lonely, then angry, and starts making phone calls. Sometimes she hangs up if the wife answers. It sets off alarm bells.

Wife goes ballistic, guy heads for a hotel to let things settle down. It usually works itself out, sometimes it only gets worse. That’s what happens in real life, it isn’t the stuff of fairy tales, and it isn’t pretty, but it happens. Adults deal with it.

    ropelight (92a6ea)

  71. When I first heard this story, it made no sense to me…leaving the house at 2:20 am, backing out of the driveway at such high speed that he hit a fire hydrant and a tree and got hurt. Then I heard he was “rescued” by a golf club waving wife. It made sense then. Wife got mad at something, scratched hubby, hubby did not want to use force on wife to stop the attack, fled the house and tried to leave, with wife probably wacking the car with the club as he backed up. I’ve seen it all before. I worked Domestic Violence for years for LAPD and this type of thing is typical. What I have noticed is that so often the women escalate the argument and, if the male tries to leave, she will try and stop him from leaving so they can continue the arguement. The male will often be attacked by the female, and if he tries to stop it, being stronger, the odds are that he will cause visable injury to the female and be possibly arrested.

This is not in defense of men who beat women. There are a lot of abusive men out there who need to be in jail. But it’s not funny when a male gets hurt or attacked by his female partner, then gets laughed at because he was not man enough to stop the abuse. Men also know if they do hit her, more likely than not he will end up in jail because he did more injury to her than she did to him.

  82. His wife is an idiot… I wouldn’t marry someone like that

Speculating, of course, but: He probably didn’t know this side of her before because he probably hadn’t provoked her to the extent an admission of an infidelity would.

If he had admitted his infidelity to her, it could have easily caused a once seemingly reasonable spouse to become extraordinarily unreasonable in shock and anger.

It doesn’t make her an idiot, though. Just a devastated woman whose trust was destroyed.

It’s naive to say one would never marry a person like that – none of us would – but until that massive of a shock occurs because of your spouse’s betrayal, I’m guessing no one quite knows how they would react.

That is the reason I take no stand on this event, yet, of course that can change. I feel no need to make a speech about DV and project my personal views or experiences over this event.

I usually don’t make a call out to or about other posters, we are all entitled to our keyboards. But currently Mike we really have no real information about the event. We don’t know for a fact that Tiger was clawing/caressing another woman, we don’t know if Elin turned tigress upon her husband over such an incident yet either. Therefore, without facts it would not really be appropriate to take a side on the fence of this event.

415woman You have a pretty good grasp on the realities that I have observed, (and BTW), never been a participant in. I’ve seen both genders behave badly at times, not all of those times would be deserving of lock and throw away the key.

I extend my thanks to those that have also pointed out my position a bit more clearly than I was able to with my initial post.

  84. If this story is true, I assume Woods either didn’t expect violence or wasn’t concerned about what his wife might do after he left. Otherwise wouldn’t Woods have taken his children with him?

  85. If this story is true, I think he would have known her anger was entirely and completely directed only at him, and therefore his children would not be at risk. Also, with their money and position, it’s not unlikely they have have live-in nannies and/or help. Perhaps there was someone with the nursery or next door to it… just possibilities.

  86. Dana, good points in your last two posts. I am naive about that kind of thing because I am lucky in life.

If a jilted lover was attacking me, I suppose I wouldn’t be all that worried about the kids, beyond the kids witnessing the attack, which I think totally crosses the line (and totally may not have happened here).

Is it just as bad to cheat on your spouse as to hit them? I think it’s certainly not clear that it isn’t just as bad. But I don’t have to fix this problem. NK’s got a good point about a man fixing this inside his own home. I’m just glad I don’t have to be any good at this kind of thing.

  87. My comment is not directed at the Tiger Woods situation, but I’ve seen examples in the news of domestic abuse situations that escalate and end up involving children. I wouldn’t leave any child alone with someone who was already violent, let alone my own child.

  88. Good luck, Tiger! I think we know who won that argument.

  89. The speculation about this, though predictable, has been rampant. His statement certainly does not confirm any speculation about an affair or that Elin caused his injuries.

  91. Tiger Woods’ serious car accident was so funny (guess wifey caught up with his lies). It was reported that Woods went for a drive after having a fight with wife Elin Nordegren over an alleged affair the golfer had with Rachel Uchitel prior to the accident. But what I’d really want to know, who exactly is Rachel Uchitel and is she Tiger Woods’ mistress??

  94. Tiger is a victim of domestic violence.
If the roles were reversed he would be in jail.
Women are trying to have it both ways.
Beating your spouse is domestic violence plain and simple.
No one in the media has addressed it as such.
Many men are ashamed to come forward in these cases he needs to get as far away from her as possible. Next time and there will be a next time it may be fatal.
