  1. I first remember Swayze in Red Dawn (where I first saw my “new” crush, Jennifer Grey). Great movie. Then Dirty Dancing. Great movie. Road House and Ghost were also strong movies.

I remember reading an article in some tossed-aside magazine while I was on a lay-over in some airport. This was before he “got sick” so there was obviously nothing about that in it. The author tagged along as Swayze went through an airport, failing in his attempt at going incognito.

Swayze was very friendly to everyone and not off-putting at all. All sorts of girls were shoving their phone numbers and addys in his pockets. He remained calm, cool, collected and friendly. Once he got on the plane, outside the view of the fandom, he took those slips of paper out of his pockets and threw them away without looking at them.

He was devoted to his wife.

I have heard some rumors of his political views but nothing substantial. I have never heard “saucy” rumors about him. I will remember three things about him: He was a sterling actor. He was down-to-earth around the “little people.” And most importantly, he was devoted to his wife.

  2. Jeeze, if Jody Powell was only 65, then doing the math, he would have only been 33 when he started out with the Carter Administration. Sad to see someone go so early.

  3. Swayze was born and reared in Houston, and we mourn his passing here. I wouldn’t list him among my favorite actors, but I would list him among my favorite actor-dancers. And he actually made a mullet haircut look good, in its day.

  4. Patrick Swayze was apparently one of the truly decent people in show business. I judge that mainly by the stories I read after he became ill, he was well regarded in the area he lived, outside the Hollywood madness, and was very devoted to his wife and mother. Sad that he should be taken away so young.

Jody Powell was also a decent man from reports of some acquaintances who had met him. He served his candidate and President and beliefs to the best of his ability, and with some civility.

    RIP to them both

  5. His agent recently mentioned Swayze’s chemo treatments while taping his recent TV series in Chicago that aired on AE, I believe. He would go to the day’s taping, then run back to his hotel room to throw up – he did this for days on end. Sad beyond belief.

  6. Patrick Swayze was a fine actor/dancer and remained a very good man in an industry full of very sordid souls. His family and his body of work are his legacy. My personal favorite- ‘Point Break.’ — I recall meeting Jody Powell briefly many years ago in New York. A tall and affable man, with a friendly smile, his disarming southern drawl was distinctive and stayed with you long after he left a room. He was not only the voice of the Carter Administration, but, if memory serves, voiced the words of Stonewall Jackson in Ken Burns’ superb PBS series, ‘The Civil War.’

    Rest in Peace. Gentlemen both.

  7. Is it too much to ask that the IMP refrains from coming on to a post of this nature and lying through his teeth ad nauseum? Good grief.

  8. Also Jim Carroll.
