College Football Open Thread

[Guest post by DRJ]

I don’t know what everyone else is doing today but my mind is on college football. Consider this an open thread to talk about your favorite (or least favorite) teams.

Here’s one to start things off: Ohio State avoids upset 31-27 over Navy.

  1. Go Trojans!

    Go Aztecs!

    redc1c4 (fb8750)

  2. Oklahoma State beat Georgia 24-10. I think Oklahoma State is going to be good this year.

    DRJ (3f5471)

  3. I went and watched my Illini get b*tch-slapped by Missouri, and we lost our All-American receiver on the 3rd play of the game.

    JD (68664a)

  4. What happened to Iowa? They beat Northern Iowa by 1 point, 17-16. I’m not that knowledgeable about Iowa football but isn’t that surprisingly close?

For all you California folks, USC beat San Jose State 56-3; Stanford beat Washington State 39-13, and UCLA leads San Diego State 23-14 at the half.

    DRJ (3f5471)

  5. JD,

Ouch. Missouri has been good recently and this year probably won’t be any different. Is the receiver out for the season? I hope not.

    DRJ (3f5471)

  6. USC beat San Jose State 56-3

It’s good to see that Los Angeles still has a professional football team!

    AD - RtR/OS! (552fc3)

  7. First, you started your thread with the most important team beating a team with personal ties to me. Go Bucks!

And as a former USMC reservist with an Army daughter, the Army/Navy game troubles me. I have to root for Army even though I was a member of an independent branch of the Navy.

But, to the point concerning Iowa/Iowa State, Iowa State has never been a pushover, despite its “mid major” standing. Iowa has lost to Iowa State on several occasions and, while upsetting, they weren’t necessarily upsets.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  8. AD,

I’m sure you’re referring to professional quality players, not professionally paid players.

    DRJ (3f5471)

  9. Sorry about Navy, JH. Is Northern Iowa the same as Iowa State?

    DRJ (3f5471)

  10. DRJ – The ending to the Iowa game was sensational. They blocked a couple kicks in the last few seconds of the game.

    JD (db7dee)

  11. Oops, Northern Iowa is a different animal entirely. Longitudinal historical studies have shown Iowa to be fair-to-middlin in the Big Ten, but that does not excuse the poor showing against Northern Iowa.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  12. DRJ, at times both have been true.
It is a standing joke here in SoCal that we don’t need the NFL to assign a pro team here, since we already have the team at the University of Spoiled Children.

    AD - RtR/OS! (552fc3)

  13. Is Northern Iowa still a Div 2 program?

    JD (db7dee)

  14. DRJ, USC is (purported to be) as corrupt and illegitimate as they come. AD is using that info for his statement. And, from what third-hand info I have heard, he is fully accurate in calling them a pro team.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  15. Guess who Ohio State plays next week.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  16. The refs blew an interference call in the OU-BYU game.

    DRJ (3f5471)

  17. William & Mary popped Virginia 26-14. That has to be an upset.

    DRJ (3f5471)

  18. I wonder if Notre Dame has finally turned it around, or if Nevada is going to be underachieving all year. They were picked to finish second in the WAC.

    JVW (d1215a)

  19. Well, well, well: BYU-Oklahoma just got very interesting.

    JVW (d1215a)

  20. #20 BYU edged #3 OU 14-13. That’s a shocker, plus Bradford went out with a shoulder sprain.

    DRJ (3f5471)

  21. I wonder if Bradford will come back in time for the September 19 game against Tulsa. That game could pose a challenge for the Sooners — Tulsa is coming off of an 11-3 season last year and played Arkansas very tough in Fayetteville last year before losing by a touchdown.

    JVW (d1215a)

  22. That really sucks for Bradford. I hope it is not a season-ending or career-ending injury. Hurting the throwing shoulder on a QB is just bad bad bad news.

    JD (a8fb17)

  23. Unlikely, JVW. That’s a 3 or 4 week injury at least.

    Scott Jacobs (d027b8)

  24. What’s the difference between a separated shoulder and a shoulder sprain?

    DRJ (3f5471)

  25. A separated shoulder suggests a dislocation where the arm is not properly connected via the socket to the shoulder.

A sprain suggests ligament, tendon, muscle trauma along with mild skeletal trauma.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  26. What’s the difference between a separated shoulder and a shoulder sprain?
    Comment by DRJ — 9/5/2009 @ 7:53 pm

Mostly the severity. A shoulder separation is different than a dislocation and varies from a sprain to something requiring surgery. The wikipedia entry on separated shoulders is pretty good.

    Stashiu3 (ed6467)

  27. Thanks, Stashiu3, for the helpful link. The report said Bradford had an AC sprain which is what your link discusses. I assume the doctors will be able to tell what Type/level of sprain Bradford has in the days ahead. He didn’t seem to be in much pain but maybe he was medicated. Still, an injury to the throwing shoulder has to be a concern.

I’m not a big OU fan but I don’t like to see individual players hurt. Fortunately for OU, the back-up QB looked good even though he’s a redshirt freshman. And the OU offensive line has potential because they are big and fast.

    DRJ (3f5471)

  28. Texas A&M beat New Mexico. Whoop.

Of course it doesn’t mean anything. Except my son and I were listening to the game because we weren’t sure A&M would win.

    Such is Aggie football.

Too bad about Oklahoma and Bradford. I like to see the SWC — oops — I mean the Big 12 to win.

  29. I envy everyone who has broadcast, cable, or internet TV. I have to suffer with radio and DVD. >:(

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  30. I have DVD’s and Hulu. Can’t remember when I last watched any TV.

    Stashiu3 (ed6467)

  31. I’m not a big OU fan but I don’t like to see individual players hurt.

    Thankfully he isn’t a real person…

    He’s an OU player. 🙂

    Scott Jacobs (d027b8)

  32. I personally could give a rats ass about any thing except keeping my family fed ,nurtured and warm . Other than that I am 100% devoted to the fight of our lives ,I,E, the federal government. peace from nw Montana!

    Sailfished (b32b4e)

  33. That OU loss puts a ton of pressure on the team to win out or be out of the running for the BCS title game.

Mizzou had eight players from last year’s team land on NFL teams this year….that’s a lot of talent to replace. Looks like they just basically reloaded…several freshmen playing and looking good. I think they may exceed initial expectations.

    rls (e58293)

  34. Random observations:

Referees made it much too easy for Okla State to beat Georgia. In 4th quarter they called made an atrocious call on late hit that set up OSU’s final touchdown. Georgia had time to come back from being down one TD, but not two.

Gator defense was good, but not great tonight. Charleston Southern made too many easy completions.

Sam Bradford must be wishing he’d gone pro after last season.

    Jal Arky (c36046)

  35. Comment by JVW — 9/5/2009 @ 6:51 pm

Good question JVW; ND sure looked good on offense, which was to be expected. The D, I’m not convinced yet, despite the shut-out. I think somewhere in the 3rd Q, Nevada was averaging over 5 yds a carry. Also nitpicking on the kicking team; 8 ko’s and not one touchback? That needs to be fixed, too many opportunities to the other side.

Overall, I think we have a pulse, there may be life in this season. Anxiously looking forward to Michigan.

    Pons Asinorum (39c941)

  36. Pons – The Irish are almost back. Keep the faith. At least 9 wins this year.

    JD (b3f947)

  37. ND lost when they fired Herm Winningham. When you fire someone with “winning” in his name, you lose.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  38. Will do JD, they need to keep the candles lit in the Grotto 😉

    Pons Asinorum (39c941)

  39. Pons – I went to Mass at the Basilica last month.

    JD (b3f947)

  40. I found a 4-leaf clover yesterday and tore the leaves off it. Take that, ND football!

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  41. I’m jealous JD. I’ve never been to the campus, but will make it one day to light a candle for my grandma.

My grandma and I use to watch ND all the time. Some of my earliest memories. She told me that she started listening to them on the radio while doing her chores when she was a young girl.

I was just out of HS when we watched our last game together; sure miss those Saturdays at her house.

I know she is still watching though.

    Pons Asinorum (39c941)

  42. Ever since Coach Lou made his wonderful remark about KSU football (in response to how he lost a game he should have won), I have hated ND, and even more so have I hated Lou Holtz.

I will enjoy my spot on the banks of the river when that man floats by…

    Scott Jacobs (d027b8)

  43. Bad news Mr. Hitchcock — tearing a 4-leaf clover reverses your wish!

    Pons Asinorum (39c941)

  44. Lou Holz was a far better coach than John “Michigan is just another game” Cooper.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  45. Geez Scott, a little rough maybe 🙂

    Pons Asinorum (39c941)

  46. There’s a rumor he might run for office.

    Pons Asinorum (39c941)

  47. PA, when asked how they could lose a game they should have won, we responded with “Well, it wasn’t like we were playing Kansas State…”

    I hope he breaks a hip on-air on ESPN…

    Scott Jacobs (d027b8)

  48. Oh, I see. And I’m guessing you are a KSU fan.
    Carry-on.

    Pons Asinorum (39c941)

  49. Kansas State barber college and lube?

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  50. Comment by John Hitchcock — 9/5/2009 @ 10:47 pm

See, it’s hateful stuff like that, that we don’t need…

KSU happens to have an amazing vetrinary medicine program, in adittion to a fine, fine engineering school (electrical and Mechanical).

They also produced Bush’s first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, who’s hand I got to shake at a KSU home game…

He was a very nice man.

    Scott Jacobs (d027b8)

  51. Pons – I will light a candle for you next time I am through South Bend.

    JD (6aa3da)

  52. I do feel bad for Sam Bradford, but he knew he wouldn’t have as talented an offensive line this year…it certainly showed last night.

    Well, it could be worse:
    Leland Stanford Junior University!

Now, who would want to attend a junior university?

  54. USC once again is stacked at RB

    McKnight
    Bradford
    Johnson
    Tyler
    Gable
    Havili
    Shoemate

I have no idea how Pete is going to keep them all happy (not to mention Aaron Corp, who looked ready to start also).

I know it’s only one game but they looked good and the new LBs looked excellent.

Jimmy Clausen and the Irish looked good too but I’ll worry about them in Oct. Now it’s get ready for the Buckeyes.

  55. “…I have no idea how Pete is going to keep them all happy (not to mention Aaron Corp, who looked ready to start also)…”

Not sure how many of us Trojan boosters are ‘well-endowed’ but I’m sure those of us that are thank you for your service in gaining this information.

    harkin (ccb9c1)

  63. Well, there’s “well endowed”, and then there are those that are “well-off”.
And, it has occurred that the well-off have provided access to the well-endowed.

The real secret is that these kids see the former second and third string quarterbacks at SC starting in the NFL and figure out that they get there by staying cool and learning all they can. Football, especially at a big program like SC, is a meritocracy. Think about those high school quarterbacks and running backs who will be recruited next year and who, at any other school, would say the spot is filled for the next couple of years. Then they look at Barkley and Corp and say, maybe not.

Carroll only wants kids who think they are capable of doing what Barkley did. Even Mitch Mustain knows that he will be playing in the NFL and, anywhere else, he might not be. Look at Brandon Hance who did the same thing a few years ago. He played for Tennessee and now has a successful music business in LA.

    Mike K (4baa9f)

  66. As an OU alum, so I wasn’t happy about all the mistakes, but it was their first game and the O-Line is new. I saw several bad calls, but they wouldn’t have mattered had OU been playing their A game. They just got beat.

Filling Bradford’s shoes, Landry is bigger than Sam and racked up 7,000 yard in his last two years in high school, but he is a red shirt freshman. Hopefully, Bradford will get back for the Tulsa game which will be played in Norman this year. Regardless, Bradford is a great kid who will do well in the NFL.

Don’t count OU out. If they run the table, they could still get into the BCS but I’m not holding my breath.

  67. Navy almost beat Ohio State in Columbus!

    arch (6ebeba)

  68. Q: What do midshipmen at the Naval Academy and cadets at West Point have in common?

A: They both got into West Point.

    arch (6ebeba)

  69. Mike…I take nothing away from Pete Carroll and the success he’s had at USC, I just think that the NCAA seems to turn a blind-eye towards some of the shenanigans that have occurred under his, and earlier, watches there.
A prep-player who gets recruited by SC knows that he will be in the spotlight, and if he does well there, will be a high draft-pick in the NFL – plus, he could end up in Hollywood, it wouldn’t be the first time (whatever happened to that Marion Morrissey guy?).

    AD - RtR/OS! (fad78f)

  70. USC’s running game was impressive.

And Bradford’s shoulder sprain is either a Grade 2 or a Grade 3 so he could be out for weeks and may even need surgery. Maybe he’s a quick healer but this is still disappointing for Sooner fans and especially for Bradford — not only is it a hard injury for a QB but he come back for his senior year instead of going pro. I like to see college players finish their eligibility and get their degrees, and this won’t encourage future players to do that.
