Larry Craig-Like Sex Sting in Florida

For those who believe people like Idaho’s Senator Larry Craig were unfairly targeted in the Minneapolis airport sting, public bathroom sex stings are also conducted in Florida and can result in the arrest of public figures:

“An undercover operation by the Daytona Beach Police Department at a mall bathroom sent nine men to jail after they went there seeking sexual relations.

Former Daytona Beach City Commissioner Mike Shallow and Seabreeze High School teacher David Bruce Behlinger were among those arrested and charged with lewd and lascivious acts and exposure of sexual organs. The charges are first-degree misdemeanors.

Sears at the Volusia Mall on International Speedway Boulevard complained of the bathroom as being a spot where men went to have sexual relations, said Investigator Jimmie Flynt.

The men who were arrested Thursday were not caught together, but rather alone and seeking others to join them.”

Each of these men are presumed innocent and we should all consider them innocent. Unless, of course, like Craig they happen to plead guilty.

  3. For those who believe people like Idaho’s Senator Larry Craig were unfairly targeted in the Minneapolis airport sting, public bathroom sex stings are also conducted in Florida and can result in the arrest of public figures:

The logic being that no one has ever been “targeted unfairly” for something if it’s something that others have been targeted fairly for.

The Duke lacrosse players were targeted fairly for rape charges because players for other college sports teams have been charged and convicted for rapes…so the logic goes.

If Craig was looking for random homosexual sex in a public restroom, he’s the most dangerous risk taking nut case who has ever lived and was willing to, even determined to, put himself, his family, his political party and his country at risk while knowing with certainty that he’d eventually be caught. It’s easier to believe that it was a politically motivated arrest of an innocent man and the transcript of the cop’s interview supports the theory.

  4. David – Is there anything wrong with being gay? Or do you just have a problem with Republicans?

  5. Charged with exposing their ‘members’. In a public men’s lavatory. Where one would expect men to expose their ‘members’ in the course of urination. Or are we talking about people who expect us to piss our pants?

Where in the article does it say they exposed their “members” in the course of urination?

  7. dave – From the officer in charge –

“We didn’t move in to make an arrest until the person masturbated,” Hoffman said.

  8. More details here:

“As a way to attract attention from another interested person, the men either cough, sneezed, tapped their feet, sometimes under the stall next to them, or they made loud zipper noises, police said.”

By the way, I have no problem with commenters who worry that defendants might have been unfairly charged or who disagree with these laws or this type of enforcement action. But as long as we have these laws and we have complainants, like the people at Sears, I expect the police to act on those complaints.

  11. David Ehrenstein – Where does it say the Council member was a Republican? Usually when the party affiliation is not mentioned that’s a dead giveaway that the offender is a Dem.
