A Father’s Day Conversation with My Four-Year-Old Son Matthew
Matthew: Shake hands with me, Daddy!
Me: [Shakes hands with Matthew.]
Matthew: Isn’t it sticky?
Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers out there. And a special Happy Father’s Day to my Dad, who would have loved to have been around to shake Matthew’s hand — even if it was sticky.

Isn’t it great to be outsmarted by your 4-year-old? One of life’s best moments.

It is amazing how much their intellectual capability expands between three and four years of age. And how one’s gray hairs proliferate during that same time.

Lucky you. My 18-month-old celebrated Father’s Day by getting into the “child-proof” bottle of Advil stashed in the bedside stand. I’ll take sticky hands over activated-charcoal poo any day.

You sure that’s not grounds for an emergency room visit?

Geekier,
I know about activated charcoal. We had a vet/ER visit for a dog that ate chocolate. It’s no fun and I’m glad your baby is okay.

Happy Father’s Day, Patrick. I remember how beautiful, brilliant and sweet your kids are. Give each of them a kiss for me.

Patterico:
the wife is an ER doc, and she was my first call, so it’s all good.

Only 4 years old and he already knows what to do sounds like a conservative kid
