SOTU: Open Thread

Filed under: General — Dana @ 5:46 pm

[guest post by Dana]

President Trump will be giving his first State of the Union address tonight. A few excerpts:

Among the accomplishments Trump is expected to highlight: passing the “biggest tax cuts” in American history; eliminating regulations; ending the so-called “war on coal”; defeating ISIS; and undoing “unfair” trade practices.

“Tonight, I want to talk about what kind of future we are going to have, and what kind of nation we are going to be. All of us, together, as one team, one people, and one American family,” Trump plans to say – emphasizing his hope that his administration can bridge partisan divides in Year Two.

“So tonight I am extending an open hand to work with members of both parties, Democrats and Republicans, to protect our citizens, of every background, color, and creed,” the excerpts say.

In a nod to foreign policy and recent provocations against North Korea’s nuclear ambitions, Trump will say that “complacency and concessions only invite aggression and provocation. I will not repeat the mistakes of the past administrations that got us into this dangerous position.”

Amusingly, an Arizona lawmaker has suggested arresting any illegal immigrants present tonight:

Rep. Paul A. Gosar (R-Ariz.) asked the Capitol Police and Attorney General Jeff Sessions to “consider checking identification . . . and arresting any illegal aliens in attendance” as well as detaining anyone using “fraudulent social security numbers and identification to pass through security.” His tweets on the subject caused a wave of online outrage roughly seven hours before the speech was scheduled to begin.

“Of all the places where the Rule of Law needs to be enforced, it should be in the hallowed halls of Congress,” Gosar wrote on Twitter. “Any illegal aliens attempting to go through security, under any pretext of invitation or otherwise, should be arrested and deported.”

To which Nancy-I-Love-Abortion-Pelosi responded, most preciously:

“Our members all profess to be people of faith, that we believe that we’re all children of God and that we have a spark of divinity in us. For him to make that statement is to dishonor the God who made us. It’s just shameful,” she told reporters.

From the other side of the aisle, a few tidbits:

More than a dozen Democratic lawmakers will boycott Trump’s State of the Union tonight because the president is a lying liar. I guess the thinking is that Democrats believe they hold the moral high ground. [Ed. – If you exclude the issue of abortion, both Democrats and Republicans are looking at the moral high ground in the rear view mirror.]

Lastly, Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore. said: “I don’t think there’s anything to be gained by dignifying the performance of a reality T.V. star.” Heh.

  9. “Americans love their country. And they deserve a government that shows them the same love and loyalty in return.”

This is the core of Trump’s appeal. The Democrats (and much of the GOP) has forgotten this, whether with illegal immigrants or foreign trade partners, or simply by ignoring the bulk of the nation outside the big cities.

If Trump can deliver on the inherent pledges here, he’ll win re-election in a landslide. That’s a big if, however. Not only is he his own worst enemy, but every man’s hand holds a knife.

  10. Pelosi’s exclusive residences in DC and SF are teeming with these “children of God”, except they’re called “the help”.

And, if they not there as “the help”, they’re hauled off rather unceremoniously.

While they may be being used as props, they have agreed to be in attendance. And I suspect that for some it’s not about politics but about the need to have their pain acknowledged and recognized when so often it’s pushed aside by the next news cycle. I for one was inspired by the guests’ stories, and reminded of the enormous capacity of love people have, as well as a supernatural defiance in the face of adversity and a will to do what’s right when the odds are against one.

Mebbe more than same room with 100 lawyers while keeping back against wall.

    =Haiku= Gesundheit!

Considering the bar was set so low you could trip over it, not drink from it, that’s not saying much, Colonel. Still the Pelosi Twitch was worth the price of admission. She really needs a new sedative script.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  131. I was out in front of my house round about 1973 or 1974. I turned my boot in the snow and got stuck like an old fashioned key in a lock. My mom was on the phone the whole time watching me through the LR window while I screamed at her to come help me. She waited till her friend hung up.

That’s one of the reasons I live 1,400 miles away. True story.

  144. Get out old [DC’s] records
    Get out old [DC’s] records
We will dance the whole night long
It’s fun to play the old time songs
If old [DC] could see us now
I know he’d be so proud
    Bring out old [DC’s] records
    Bring out old [DC’s] records
    I remember my Aunt Bea
She’d dance with [DC] till two or three
If old[ DC] could see us now
I know he’d shout out loud

    Dig out old [DC’s] records
    Bring out old [DC’s] records
We’re all here, we’ve all got dates
We’ll dance all night to the seventy-eights
If old [DC] could see us now
I know he’d be so proud
If old [DC] were with us still
    I know he’d come around

    Get out old [DC’s] records
    Dig out old [DC’s] records
    Back to nineteen [seventy]-five
    The foxtrot, jitterbug ‘n jive
If old [DC] could see us now
I know he’d be so proud

    Get out old [DC’s] records
    Bring out old [DC’s] records
    High above the fireplace
    There’s a smile on old [DC’s] face
If old [DC] could see us now
I know he’d be so proud
If old [DC] were with us still

  153. 9. “Americans love their country. And they deserve a government that shows them the same love and loyalty in return.”

Some commmentators on TV didn’t figure that one out, because Trump did not elaborate.

By love, Trump means keeping other people down, on the theory that one man’s gain is another person’s loss.

This is probably courtesy of Miller, although I’ve heard it before.

33.Smart move by the President to bring actual victims of illegal alien violence to shut up the left

If the left is shut up, it is because it is stupid.

This is moral equivalent of racism and a classic racist tactic applied to a different, very heterogenous group. It goes against everything in Judeo-Christian philosophy. You can do this with any group of people you want to persecute.

    Sammy Finkelman (02a146)

  155. 45. nk (dbc370) — 1/30/2018 @ 7:00 pm

Is I was wrong about Stormy? She no kiss and tell after all?

It was always not kiss, but tell, until Trump’s lawyers got in contact with her back around 2011.

    Sammy Finkelman (02a146)

  156. I’d give the whole speech a B-

Some accuracy, but a lot of that irrelevant, a few really false notes, a few actually good things said.

I’d give most, or all, State of the Union speeches no better than a B.

    Sammy Finkelman (02a146)

  157. The speech was written for 50 minutes, but lasted half an hour longer because of all the applause.

Trump, like as if he was Khrushchev, was leading the clapping, or maybe joining in in the hopes that when he stopped the others would take it as a signal to stop. Nobody commented on that.

    Sammy Finkelman (02a146)

  158. Less than one year has passed since I first stood at this podium, in this majestic chamber, to speak on behalf of the American people and to address their concerns, their hopes, and their dreams. That night, our new administration had already taken very swift action. A new tide of optimism was already sweeping across our land.

What’s he talking about? What action> And what optimism? The stock market?

To everyone still recovering in Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands — everywhere — we are with you, we love you, and we always will pull through together, always. (Applause.)

Right after the speech, FEMA pulled out of Puerto Rico.

Then, after getting criticism, it reversed itself. Or maybe had never made such a decision.

    http://www.foxnews.com/world/2018/01/31/fema-says-it-is-not-cutting-off-aid-to-puerto-rico.html

FEMA spokesman William Booher tells The Associated Press that the agency had been evaluating whether enough stores and supermarkets had reopened by Jan. 31 to justify ending distribution of food and water to municipal governments on the island. He says that decision had not actually been taken but officials mistakenly made the date public this week.

    Sammy Finkelman (02a146)

  159. Since the election, we have created 2.4 million new jobs…

Here we get a plethora of statistics, with no context and no scale. This happens in almost eveyr State of the Union message. I wish one time a president would stop it.

    Sammy Finkelman (02a146)

  160. And just as I promised the American people from this podium 11 months ago, we enacted the biggest tax cuts and reforms in American history. (Applause.)

Was that the main thing he promised?

we nearly doubled the standard deduction for everyone. (Applause.) Now, the first $24,000 earned by a married couple is completely tax-free. (Applause.)

he gives a number of true statements about teh tax bill, startng with individuals, but never mentions any provisions that impact negatively on people, like eliminating personal exemptions.

In April, this will be the last time you will ever file under the old and very broken system,

Very true, and good to mention that it hasn’t taken effect yet, although he doesn’t need to include the insult “broken.” Whatever was broken about it hasn’t been fixed. If he wants to say so, can he explain?

and millions of Americans will have more take-home pay starting next month — a lot more. (Applause.)

What he doesn’t say, and maybe doesn’t know, is that there will be many people who will discover they are getting much smaller tax refunds, come 2019, unless they take care to adjust their withholding.

We eliminated an especially cruel tax that fell mostly on Americans making less than $50,000 a year, forcing them to pay tremendous penalties simply because they couldn’t afford government-ordered health plans. (Applause.) We repealed the core of the disastrous Obamacare. The individual mandate is now gone. Thank heaven. (Applause.)

    True, except

It’s not gone for the tax year 2018.

It’s gone for 2019, and will be missing from tax returns filed in 2020.

Also the tax was not in fact, often collected. There was no requirement to answer the question, no auditing, and the tax was paid only from a person’s refund. There were exemptions but hard to get after the fact.

He goes on about a business that is doing well. he shows off and raises an employee (a welder, a skill where there’s a shortage) The employee is black.

Talks about veterans, saying they’ve removed more than 1,500 VA employees and asks for legislation giving the same power to all Cabinet Secrtetaries. This is where he throws in something about a government that shows them the same love and loyalty in return but immediately talks about judges, and mentions the Second amendment, and about the FDA approveing more new and generic drugs and medical devices than ever before in our country’s history. He adds:

We also believe that patients with terminal conditions, and terminal illness, should have access to experimental treatment immediately that could potentially save their lives.

and comments they shouldn’t have to leave the country for that.

This is one place he tgalks like everybody is rich. Another place is where he says the average American family of four has an income of $75,000 a year.

A typical family of four making $75,000 will see their tax bill reduced by $2,000, slashing their tax bill in half. (Applause.)

Maybe he didn’t mean to say that a typical American family of four has an income of $75,000 a year.

Actually, it might be pretty close:

https://www.census.gov/data/tables/time-series/demo/income-poverty/4-person.html This table goes on;y up to 2005 and has the mnedian income in 2005 for 4-Person Families in the United States as
$67,019 This might be based on tax returns, though.

    Sammy Finkelman (02a146)

  161. We built the Empire State Building in just one year

This is true, but he is not analyzing the causes of this change.

Getting rid of all regulations could throw out the baby with the bathwater, and all he proposes is getting permits in two years and better yet one year. That’s all?

The cause of this, of course is environemntal impact statements, most of which are totally uselss, and certainly repetitive.

    Sammy Finkelman (02a146)

  162. EIRs, and the endless court challenges to EIRs (my puppy probably has standing) are the bane of infrastructure. At the very least, here should be a fast-track option where a prima facie showing that the change is extremely positive allows for a waiver of the full EIR.

Example: L.A. traffic is terrible and all those cars idling causes quite a bit of smog, etc. A Sepulveda subway line will improve things by unloading the 405 AND connecting the other two subway lines in a circle route and to LAX. Grant a waiver and get started. As it stands, it is more than a decade before some projects can get started.

    Kevin M (752a26)

  163. @163

To piggyback on this: at least 5 people died during construction on the Empire State Building. What’s an acceptable number of deaths?

    Davethulhu (fab944)

  164. To piggyback on this: at least 5 people died during construction on the Empire State Building. What’s an acceptable number of deaths?

Apparently, 5 were. It’s kind of an asinine question as no death is “acceptable” but you cannot ensure that there will be none. It’s also not germane to the question of permits or delay.

    Kevin M (752a26)

  165. I think the same number died building the unremarkable Rosemont Horizon (now All state Arena); and 14 workers died in 1982 in one incident building the IN Rt. 912 (Cline Ave) which has already been largely decommissioned. To add insult to injury, a doctor and his wife drove their car off a missing bridge section due to outdated GPS info few years back.

  166. True K.M., but couldn’t resist. That 912/Cline made it tolerable for those traveling between Chicago proper and much more affordable but decent parts of NWI.

    urbanleftbehind (4b1cb9)

  167. I’ll admit error here, my initial read was an attack on regulations rather than permitting.
