Jobs Report Not Encouraging

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:15 am

The jobs numbers are out. Here is the only statistic that matters:

The civilian labor force participation rate was little changed at 62.8 percent in October and has been essentially flat since April.

There is no point in looking at measures like the standard unemployment number, which doesn’t even take account of people who have dropped out of the work force. That number is just a lie. Naturally, that is the one Big Media always focuses on.

  1. The media says these are people leaving the workforce because they are too frustrated to find work as if it is not their fault. A large number feel empowered by Obama, Pelosi, etc., to take advantage of the welfare safety net, disability, etc. With free health care, there is no reason to go out and get any job. Pelosi said Obamacare is great because instead of getting a low paying job to get a health care plan, you could express your artistic inclinations by writing poetry or music.

  2. no worries Mr. P we gonna start hiring heroes going forward so all these numbers are just stupid non-hero numbers

  3. Let’s also remember that the BLS counts part-time jobs the same as full-time jobs, that this “recovery” has been predominately based on new part-time jobs, and household income has slumped between $2000 and $4000 under Obama. Let’s celebrate these achievements!!

    Not a one

  5. Very near where you are now, straight down south on Western to Addison, on the northwest corner is Hero’s, the best cold submarine sandwiches ever. They’ve been there a very long time — they may have given the name to the sandwich, not taken it. Don’t go there during lunchtime on schooldays — 4,000 plus student high school across the street. Mine, BTW.

But mainly depending on the way that statistic reflects upon the political leadership in DC.

High unemployment rate? Republican occupying the White House? Ding, ding, ding. Announcement, announcement! We’ve got late breaking news to report and proclaim!

Low unemployment rate? Democrat occupying the White House? Ding, ding, ding! Announcement, announcement! We’ve got late breaking news to report and proclaim!

  8. Our local state rep just got ousted. She had stated during a debate that we were in an economic recovery when the figures just recently out showed our area of CT to be down around 3000 jobs over the last few years, and a lot of the replacement jobs were part time and/or lower pay than the ones lost. Her opponent hammered her on that. He won, unseating a four-term incumbent.

I’m one of the ones who is no longer counted, having lost my job 11 months ago, and not even been able to find part-time or temp work. I’m now offically a displaced worker, trying to get WIA money to pay for school, but you have to show ads for 6 full time jobs the training/classes would qualify you for. Sadly all the jobs in this area are looking for people with “X years experience” or are part time. If we hadn’t bought a house four years ago, we’d be out of CT by now.

  11. It’s good to see that Obama has finally brought the unemployment rate down to the peaks of the previous 20 years.

  12. You know, those peaks that happened during the periods of extremely high employment caused by the failed trickle-down theories.

  13. I would not click that link, but is it sexist to think it’s the kind of spam that belongs on a thread about unemployment?

  14. Forget about the people who have stopped looking. After the misplaced job numbers from one state that reduced the unemployment rate and the outright lie just before the 2012 election, how can anyone believe the statistics?

    2 Hours 15000 Rs 250 $
    4 Hours 25000 Rs 420 $
    Additional 1 hour 4000 RS 70 $
    1 Day 24 hrs 35000 RS 600 $
    1 Additional day 30000 Rs 500 $

  18. Point of fact: the so-called ‘discouraged workers’ who aren’t counted as officially unemployed are not necessarily that.

There is NO metric to count who is no longer seeking work and NO attempt is made to find out if they are or not. They are simply dropped from the numbers when UE benefits run out.

In fairness, this is the way DOL has reported these numbers for decades.

IIRC, it was the media who began describing these people as ‘discouraged workers’ during the ’82-’83 recession, to make Reagan look bad. They had not previously paid any attention to those whose benefits ran out, except to advocate extensions.

Up until Obama, from Reagan through W, the number fluctuated between 1.2-1.8% of workers, tending to the higher end of the range in recession or high unemployment periods.

But for all we know – and all that was ever known – those workers did go back to work. The work force participation numbers tend to confirm that was the case – UNTIL Obama, that is.

Most do no expect politics to be more than brokers making deals moving $Trillions determining the lives of Billions on a putting green. It is the human condition.

But there comes a time in every Banana Republic when the only path forward is strong man termination.

  20. Over the last few decades, the calculation of the unemployment rate (and other stats) have been modified to protect incumbent politicians. How many of these jerks would have been re-elected if the true unemployment rate of 11% was the official statistic?
