Donald Trump To Meet With Mexico’s President Today

Filed under: General — Dana @ 6:34 am

[guest post by Dana]

Donald Trump has accepted an invitation from Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto to meet privately with him in Mexico City this morning. According to President Nieto, he wanted the opportunity to “promote the interests of Mexico in the world and, principally, to protect Mexicans wherever they are.”

This meeting comes before Trump’s big immigration speech in Phoenix tonight where he is expected to clarify his immigration policy.

It’s anybody’s guess what he will have to say about the vexing issue.

  1. A speech in Phoenix tonight, if it’s not cancelled.

  2. Trump might get some cold hard facts told –like how, without Mexico’s cooperation, there will be a million Central Americans, not Mexicans, crawling over the border before he even draws up plans for his chimerical wall.

    nk (dbc370)

  3. I don’t know what this means – who actually arranged it, who requested it, whose ideas it was, what, if anything, Trump expects to happen, maybe what Neito expects to happen.

The one thing that’s certain is that the invitation to Hillary is a cover story: In order to appear not to be taking sides, both major party candidates were invited, but this is all for Trump. And Hillary is not going to interrupt her schdule to go and fly to Mexico for a photo op, nor as tghere any expectation she would. At least not right now. This was all worked out with Trump’s people.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto sounds like he is going to lobby Trump, and he sounds like he is going to mainly talk about the dangers of the trip and ask Trump not to be make it more dangerous by cracking down in the wrong way, and say Mexico is cracking down, too, and warn about the possibility of proposing something that would make Mexicans vulnerable to crime in the United States by making them afraid to contact the police, or get them in a situation where they will carry too much cash and be robbed, like happens in New Orleans.

And he will talk about conditions in any kind of detention, and ask him not to confine Mexicans, or to limit that, and if anyone is confined, to let them just cross back across the border without difficulty, which is mostly the case now, but he will want to clarify that Trump will not change that. And also that he is not against Mexicans in the United States taking personal exemptions for dependents who live in Mexico. And he will ask especially not to confine children and adolescents, especially away from caretakers.

Things very hard to refuse. Even if he won’t gte everything, he’ll get a bunch of things. It is important for bipartianship – whatever Trump agrees to, will be honored by the Democrats, too.

He will only speak about Mexicans. He won’t discuss really general immigraiton policy too much, but just details. How it would work, according to Trump.

  6. “Do you care how you get your 10 Bb for the Wall? I can make a few calls and have it done by the time you take the floor at your inaguration ball.” Point being that any hesitation to consider the idea of cartels fronting the money would be leaked and exploited by the Dems. Deals, you know.

  7. “CUE WORLD’S SMALLEST VIOLIN: Bill Clinton eyes exit from charity that has shaped legacy.

When Bill Clinton told the staff of his global charity he would have to step down if Hillary Clinton won the White House, he was vividly clear about how that felt: Worse than a root canal, he said.

For Clinton, the foundation that bears his name has shaped much of his post-White House legacy, helping transform him from a popular yet scandal-tainted former president into an international philanthropist and humanitarian.

The Clinton Foundation’s charitable works amounted to just “15% of its revenues while Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State, and just 6.4% in the first year after it.” In 2013 he Foundation spent as much on travel for its executives and staff as it did on charitable grants.

It’s easy to see why giving that up would be painful, but it isn’t as though being First Spouse doesn’t come with perks of its own.”

  9. Guessing: Trump will probably come away from the meeting saying, either in his seech or elsewhere, he got along fine with the president of Mexico, and they’re going to have a great relationship.

But in his speech in Phoenix he will still be for the wall, and will NOT say that Mexico has agreed to pay for it. Nor will he say it will not pay for it. Nor will he abandon the idea that Mexico should pay for it. But they will get along great.

  11. It’s anybody’s guess what he will have to say about the vexing issue.

Everything there is to say. He’ll be for it, against it, in-between and somewhere else from moment to moment. You can take bets on what he’ll say at 3:17 p.m. compared to what he said at 2:49 p.m. with perfect confidence that it will be entirely random. The sucker bet is whether the sentences will be longer than three words and whether one of those words is “yuuge”, “tremendous” or “great”.

  12. The election of Mrs. Bill Clinton is still the obvious answer.

  15. Trump’s trip reminds me a little of when John McCain flew to Iraq in 2008 to review the troops, or whatever it was that he did. I’m not sure it did McCain much good.

During the Clinton Administration, kids held a bake sale to contribute towards paying off the national debt. And, as Rush pointed out, Clinton kept it.

I’m sure we could get a gofundme going to pay for a wall with Mexico. But I suppose that would count as a loss for Trump’s PR machine.

  16. The important thing is Mr. Trump’s rolling up his sleeves and starting the dirty difficult work of making America great again. You’re either with him or you’re not with him.

    Me I’m with him.

We gotta beat that pig for the love of all that’s holy.

We have to beat her like pig! A naughty and very evil pig what got the stink all up in it.

Cause this election isn’t really about stenchpig or Mr. Trump’s honor, vision, and self-sacrifice.

    It’s about who we are.

  32. When Hillary becomes president, the first agenda of her kleptocracy will be to make a rousing speech about American Sovereignty and border security after which she will begin building tunnels between the US and Mexico.

Inside the tunnel, “candidate citizens” will first enter the “vetting station” at which the candidates will be asked if they are here of their free will and any pets they are bringing across will be vetted with proper shots, tags and exams.

Next, they’ll be issued ID’s… voter IDs, American Passports, Social Security Cards, and Walmart gift cards with $10,000 as a welcome from American tax payers.

Next housing vouchers with 6 months free rent and travel to their respective city and state. Good paying jobs will be made available.

Emerging, in the US side, the citizen candidates will take the oath in a quick confirmation ceremony and be whisked away to their new life as American Democrats.

    Just toooooo funny.

  35. President of Mexico agreed with Trump the necessity to secure the border.

The Mexican President further called the meeting “open and constructive”.

Sorry Trump haters, apparently Trump did a good job and looked Presidential.

But the left is saying the President of Mexico really didn’t mean it and was just being polite, IOW the Mexican President can’t stand up for himself in a meeting with Trump.

  38. So, in an afternoon, Trump went to Mexico and hammered out a mutually agreeable deal with the Mexican President (who called Donald Trump his friend)—on immigration.

Also, he earned himself an extra wall … on the southern Mexican border. Which, it just so happens, is where most of the illegal immigrants entering the USA are from. Trump has revamped the Monroe Doctrine.

Some of us, in short, seem to be attempting to win an election, whereas others are still fixated on winning a fight they had on Twitter.

If Trump’s as awful a candidate as you maintain he is (and he might very well be!), then he hardly needs your help in losing.

Sammeh… the person who was quoted was spot on there. Usually, she’s right where the money is.

Peobably close to two thirds of the time, or in private meetings or doing nothing. But not yesterday, at least the whole day.

Ohio is part of fly-over country to her, so you may be right, as well.

It’s not the East Coast and it’s not the West Coast. It’s considered just about the most crucial state in a close election. It’s one of 5 states carried by by the winner, either Bush and Obama, in all four elections from 2000 to 2012. Florida is another.

Romney’s GOTV operation in Ohio was sabotaged by someone – I mean internally. Taht was a heavily contested state.

What is highlarious is that she was going to speak about her policies and plans but he stole the day.

She was speaking in front of the American Legion. What got quoted on TV was Hillary Clinton saying something about it takes time to build relationships, which she did “as your Secretary of State.”

That is, no matter how well Donald Trump appears to get along with the president of Mexico, pay no attention. It is interesting she didn’t come up with stronger criticism.

He did get along with the presdident of Mexico.

In fact, the New York Times editorial board is disappointed in the president of Mexico.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/01/opinion/donald-trumps-deportation-nation.html

…But instead of chastising Mr. Trump, Mr. Peña Nieto treated him like a visiting head of state at a news conference, with side-by-side lecterns and words of deferential mush.

An unusually muted Mr. Trump called Mr. Peña Nieto his friend and said they had not talked about the bill for the wall; Mr. Peña Nieto later disputed that on Twitter, saying he had refused to pay. There was no friction at the photo-op, which allowed the Republican nominee to try on his calm, grown-up voice, avoid offending his nativist base and humiliate Mexico, all at the same time.

    Sammy Finkelman (e1ddc6)

  79. It’s exactly like I thought:

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/cheats/2016/09/01/donald-trump-vs-enrique-pe-a-nieto-twitter-feud-is-on.html

When asked by reporters if they discussed payment for the wall in their closed-door meeting, Trump said no. President Peña Nieto later claimed that he began the meeting by telling Trump Mexico would never pay for it.

    Sammy Finkelman (643dcd)

  80. Charles Krauthammer said that Donald Trump came off looking very well in this. He looked presidential, and he took charge of the press conference, deciding on what reportes to call.

Krauthammer, it looks like, overestimated Trump’s incomptence, so he was surprised.

    I never heard that before.

  82. For all you Second Amendment lovers who are absolutely convinced that Trump has your back, look what Trump said yesterday:

“No one wins in either country when human smugglers and drug traffickers prey on innocent people, when cartels commit acts of violence, when illegal weapons and cash flow from the United States into Mexico,”

Donald Trump agrees with the Mexican President that American guns and money cause Mexico’s problems. Will gun restrictions be the bargaining chip Trump uses to convince Mexico to help pay for the Wall?

    DRJ (15874d)

  83. Before immigration folks get too excited — “See? Trump may keep his promise about the Wall!” — remember: Everything is negotiable to Trump. Everything.
