Student Punished for “All Lives Matter” ThoughtCrime

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:32 am

A stirring tale of WrongThink eliminated:

In the emotional hours after five police officers were shot and killed during a Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas last month, Rohini Sethi vented on Facebook.

“Forget #BlackLivesMatter;” wrote Sethi, the vice president of the Student Government Association at the University of Houston. “More like AllLivesMatter.”

This is not allowed, and she has been suspended from her post and ordered to a re-education camp:

“Her post and subsequent actions were very divisive,” student body President Shane A. Smith told The Washington Post. “It caused some in our student body to become very upset with her. They lost faith in her ability to represent them because they felt that she did not understand or respect the struggles in their lives.”

On Wednesday, in a crowded Student Government Association meeting, student leaders gave Smith temporary power to sanction Sethi. Smith complied with their request that he suspend her. Sethi also offered to take a three-day cultural sensitivity workshop, Smith said.

“Offered.”

I’d want to see an organization like FIRE get involved, but Ms. Sethi has already caved and acknowledged her “wrongdoing” in engaging in the ThoughtCrime of saying “all lives matter” when all right-thinking people know to reserve their concern for the lives of people with a particular skin color. Jonathan Turley reports that she has issued a statement of apology:

I have chosen to take these steps on my own because of the division I’ve created among our student body,. I may have the right to post what I did, but I still should not have. My words at the time didn’t accurately convey my feeling and cause many students to lose their faith in me to advocate for them. I will always continue to learn and be ready to discuss these issues.

It was easy to beat her into submission, apparently. But then, it generally is . . . more than most people would like to acknowledge.

  2. Greetings:

I grew up in the Bronx of the ’50s and ’60s. Back there and then, there was a bit of a local folk tradition that dealt with situations in which someone wanted you to do something you really didn’t want to do. The verbal expression used to designate such situations went “Fine, you want me to do that, you kick my ass and I’ll do it.” Useful tool that.

I do have sympathy for the Texas taxpayers who subsidize this [redacted].

  5. Is it any wonder that after our kids fill their minds with five or six years of this tripe, while accumulating a student loan debt in the low six figures, that they don’t have the capacity for retaining useful knowledge nor the time to engage in beneficial life experiences? And is it truly puzzling that employers would prefer to hire immigrants from India rather than take a chance on the garbage that our university system spews out upon our society?

  8. I propose we refer to the movement by a more accurate title. Only Blacks Matter.

But the Free Speech aspect is a bit more complicated. She holds an official position with the SGA, with an expectation that her public comments adhere to the SGA positions. If she had posted a “Death to Cops”, and was not disciplined by the SGA, we would be criticizing the SGA, and rightfully so.

I propose we refer to the movement by a more accurate title. Only Blacks Matter. </blockquote. No, amore accurate tiutle would be: Black Lies Matter.

A good riposte would be, not ALL Lives Matter, but ALL BLACK LIVES MATTER.. They are purporting to be concerned about black lives, about whih, presumably eople didn't care about before, But most blacks wh are kiled are killed by people who are NOT the police or correctional guards, but I forget they only care about what police do, not about what guards in jails, do.

If this is what the SGA demands, the political culture of the SGA is not just sick, but dangerous. I think the biggest problem is that many people do not understand what is wrong, and what is false, with the arguments of the Black Lies Matter people.

  16. Tanny, I think she denounced herself and offered to submit to a “cultural sensitivity workshop” in hopes of retaining her position.

This is right out of Mao’s cultural revolution, but so far without the death by prolonged torture. The progressive mind is one of the constants in the human experience. It transcends race, culture and time.

  24. ….but no negro or black in America has any direct relationship with Africa

Well, I know that’s not true since I have a friend last name Nto who came from Ghana. He’s been an American for two years now so I figure he’s an authentic African American. But actually I don’t understand what a “direct relationship” could be. If a guy’s last name is Morelli does he have a “direct relationship” to Italy? I was born here as were the last twelve generations of my family so I guess I’m a native American. But do I still have a “direct relationship” to Prussia and Ireland?

You’re a coward. I was treasurer of the Student Government in college when 9/11 happened. We had a memorial as some students parents were murdered when the buildings where toppled by terrorists. The cowardly admin told us in the SGA to not say a word and make the event silent and “non-political.”

I ignored that decision and gave comfort to the classmates I knew that were suffering. Instead of being a coward, you need to do the right thing.

    NJRob (a07d2e)

Not that I want him to appoint pro-life judges. If Roe v. Wade had happened in 1943 instead of 1973, we wouldn’t be facing all the problems we’re facing now.

The explorer freezes. His guide reassures him: “no worry. drums good.” “The drums are good? No danger?” “Yes, drums good. Keep going.”

The explorer takes a deep breath and they trudge on. As the jungle gets thicker and denser, and dusk starts to fall, the drums continue, pounding louder, ever closer. The explorer asks again, “Are you sure those drums are okay… nothing to be afraid of? It sounds like they’re getting louder.”

“No. no worry. Drums good.” They continue on.

As night falls and they start to break camp, the drums become even louder, more intense. The explorer cannot shake a sense that they spell impending doom, but his guide continues to reassure him: “drums good.”

Then, just as darkness settles most completely over the jungle, the drums suddenly stop. The guide’s face goes ashen, a look of horror in his eyes! The explorer asks, “What? What’s the matter? The drums stopped– is that bad?”

The guide responds, “When drums stop, very bad! Bad thing coming! No good for anybody!”

“What!? What is it? What happens after the drums stop!?!”

    The guide responds: “Bass solo.”
