Potpourri for $100

It’s not a good website day so instead of posting separately on several stories, I’m combining them into this post.

  • Coloradoan Abby Toll was found guilty of felony animal abuse for encasing her [ex-]boyfriend’s puppy in packing tape and taping him to the refrigerator. She was reportedly mad at the boyfriend for paying attention to the dog and/or at the dog for biting her.
  • Terry Bradshaw teaches how to say you don’t like someone in a nice way: “[H]e doesn’t like me, and I’m learning not to like him.”
  • Over the weekend, Senator Harry Reid told a Las Vegas rally he wanted to move forward with immigration reform, but he’d changed his mind by today’s Senate meeting in Washington. They really mean it when they say “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”
  • The Anchoress shows President Obama making friends with Canadian Prime Minster Stephen Harper at the nuclear summit. Don’t miss the caption contest.

      Heh. Probably not. I’m pretty sure Texas doesn’t recognize self-defense of third party animals.

      In fact, a few years ago, Texas authorities were concerned about prosecuting animal abuse cases unless there was a showing the animal had been tortured. I don’t know if that was the law or if it’s still the law, but I still wouldn’t want to face a Texas jury in an animal abuse case — especially if the victims were puppies or kittens.

      Interestingly, domestic abuse sources claim there is a link between domestic abuse and animal abuse:

      Numerous studies show domestic violence offenders often use violence against animals as a way to torture their human victims while asserting power and control.

      Between 50 and 71 percent of women seeking shelter from domestic violence reported their abuser had hurt or killed at least one family pet.

      Torturing a puppy can get you 18 months in jail. But I’m pretty sure that wasn’t your point, and it’s probably the opposite of your point.

    17. The two domestic abuse idiots deserve each other and some jail time–her for taping the dog to the fridge (who even thinks this stuff up?) and him for letting her do it. Gives new meaning to the idea of a refrigerator magnet.

    18. There is continually mention of stricter border patrols and immigration regulations. However, this would not resolve the problem. I urge the government to pass bills encouraging companies to hire legal employees. On the other hand, improve penalties for those who hire prohibited migrants and traffickers who treat people further as a object.
